EDWARD CLOYES, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS.
PAPER FILE AND BINDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD CLoYEs, a citizen of the United States, resident of Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Paper Files and Binders; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art` to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to paper files and binders, having for its object the provision of a simple eihcient and inexpensive device for the purpose.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention Figure l is a perspective view of the invention as applied; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same taken through one of the binding wires; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the body strip; Fig. i is a detail perspective view of the clamp strip, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the cover strip.
In these drawings the letter a, designates a body strip preferably formed of light sheet metal having its lateral edge portions bent over upon the body of the strip, as shown at a, a', and having a transversely concave front face ZJ. This body strip has two binding wires c, c, attached thereto, upon its grooved face, such wires, which are of copper or other suitable metal which will admit of their being exible, being soldered at one end thereof, one at each end portion of the body strip, and projecting at their free end portions from the front face of such strip.
The papers to be filed or bound are perforated by the pointed ends c', c', of the bind.- ing wires and slid thereupon until they lie closely against the body strip, when a transversely convex rear face and clamp strip (Z, having perforations cZ, d', for engagement Patented Feb. 9, 1909.
Seria1 No. 440,097.
with said wires is slipped thereupon until it lies closely against the face of the papers which are pressed within the groove or concave face of the body strip. The flexible binding wires are then turned towards each other at their soldered inner ends until they lie against the outer face of the clamp strip in the groove thereof. This clamp strip is usually formed of light sheet metal in the saine .manner described for the body strip and is preferably somewhat narrower than the body strip. The papers to be bound have thus a groove or corrugation formed therein where they are pressed between the front concave face of the body strip and the rear convex face of the clamp strip, such groove or corrugation acting to take the strain or weight of the papers from the binding wires.
In order to provide a cover for the binding wires and a guard therefor, a cover strip e, is employed, such strip being also formed usually of light sheet metal, having its longitudinal edges bent rearward and towards each other to form spring-acting wings f, j, which are separated from the body of the strip by -intervals f', f. This cover strip is slipped over the clamp strip at one end and slid thereupon until it entirely covers and protects the same, overlying and inclosing the binding wires, the wings f, f, passing between the clamp and body strips and acting to further tighten the engagement of the strip with the papers or to make the holding groove or corrugation in the papers more pronounced.
The cover strip may as readily be disengaged from the clamp strip and the flexible binding wires being bent upward the papers may be conveniently slipped therefrom and new papers substituted or papers added, as may be desired.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A paper file and binder including a body strip having a transversely concave front face, flexible binding wires secured to said body strip'and having their free ends projecting from said front face, and a clamp strip having a transversely convex rear ,face l land provided With perforations for engage- 10 and provided With perforaticns for engagel ment With the binding Wires, and a cover nient With the binding Wires. 1 strip for said clamp strip.
2. A paper ile and binder including a l In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature, body strip having a transversely concave in presence of tWo Witnesses.
