To all whom it may concern:

lie it known. that I, ARTHUR T. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented new and usetlful Improvements in Book-Clasps, of which the following a specification.

This invention relates to a clasp applicable to bank books, pass-books, memorandum books, and other books or portfolios and has for its object to provide means, simple in construction, effective in operation and durable in use, for securely clamping the covers and the intermediate leaves, papers, checks, currency, or other papers between the covers of a book or portfolio.

These objects I accomplish by the means hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings embodying my invention.

In the drawings in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

As illustrated in the drawing, 1 represents the covers of a bank book of ordinary construction, and 2 the intermediate leaves thereof. The front cover of the book may, if desired, be provided with a metallic plate 3, which may be cut away, if desired, to form an opening or aperture 4, and retaining lips 5 adapted to hold a name plate or card. The book is provided with a clasp that is pivotally mounted upon one of the covers of said book, and moves at its free end in the arc of a circle in engaging or disengaging the marginal edges of the book.

The clasp consists of an arm 6 pivotally mounted by means of a stud 7 upon the plate 3, preferably about midway of the Width of the cover, and the lower end of the arm 6, terminates in a cross bar or arm 8 that has an offset 9, depressed inward, so as to engage a depression or socket 10 formed in the plate 3, and prevent outward displacement of said clasp. The outer portion of the arm 8 is doubled over on to theback 0f the book preferably in the form of a loop 11 that is designed to enable the clasp to be opened out sufficiently to hold the quantity of bank bills 'or notes desired. At the same time the outer portion of the arm or bar 8, and the back arm or bar 12 clamps the outer edges of the book firmly in place. The back arm 12 is also preferably provided with a depressed oll'set 13 that presses against the back of the book approximately opposite the offset portion 9 of the bar 8.

hen the device is in use, and the currency is inserted between the covers of the book the clasp is in the position shown in Fig. 1, and the currency or other papers within the binders is securely held in place between the covers or binders.

In order to remove the contents from between the covers, the clasp is swung outward into the position indicated by dotted lines on Fig. 1 whereby the covers may be readily opened and the contents removed.

Instead of providing a depressed offset 9 on the bar 8 to engage a depression 10 in the plate 3, to prevent outward displacement of the clasp, the bar 8 may be provided with an outwardly extending offset 14: adapted to en gage a corresponding projection 15 formed on the plate 3, or otherwise secured to the cover 1, to prevent the clasp from being readily removed from its desired position when in use.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A clasp comprising an arm having its outer end adapted to be pivotally attached to a cover of a book, and bent at its inner end to form a crossbar, said bar being doubled over on to itself to form a clamp adapt ed to engage and compress the covers of a book.

2. A clasp comprising an arm having its outer end adapted to be pivotally .attached to a book cover and bent at its inner end to form a crossbar, said bar being doubled over onto itself to form a clamp having a loop at the outer portion of said clamp to adjust the width and increase the tension of said clamp.

3. A clasp comprising an arm having its outer end adapted to be pivotally attached to a book cover and bent at its inner end to form a crossbar, said bar being doubled over on to itself to form a clamp adapted to engage and compress the covers of a book, said clamp and cover having a respective projection and depression adapted to engage each other.
