' 4 Claims. (Cl. 128505) This invention relates to garments and more particularly to a brassiere.

Because the straps are unsightly and shoulder straps cannot be worn with summer wear and low neck dresses, and also because the back straps especially are uncomfortable to wear and are not dependable, efiorts have been made to provide a so-called strapless brassiere, that is, one which will stay in place without the use of straps. I

It has for example been proposed to apply them adhesively by employing pressure sensitive adhesive around the breast cups and thus make them self sustaining. However such articles, however supported, do not function to lift up the breasts and support them in elevated position which is desirable both for hygienic reasons and for the sake of appearance. Their purpose is as a covering for the breasts.

An object of this invention is to provide a breast supporting construction which will be easily applied and will be self supporting without the use of straps, which will be simple and inexpensive, and which will lift up the breasts and support them comfortably in a natural and attractive form.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a disposable breast cup that is directly attached to each breast by means of a pressure sensitive adhesive so as to properly shape and support the breast.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a brassiere bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efiicient in operation.

For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is an outside plan view of an article made in accordance with the present invention;

Figure 2 is a side view of the article shown in Figure 1 in operative supporting engagement with a breast;

Figure 3 is an inside plan view of the article shown in Figure 1; and

Figure 4 is a side perspective view similar to Figure 2, showing the manner in which the breast cups are applied to the breasts of the wearer.

In accordance with this invention, I have provided a brassiere manufactured from fiat flexible sheet material and which is provided with predetermined crease and fold lines to provide a covering for the nipple and tabs and pressure sensitive adhesive whereby it may be placed in securing enclosing engagement with an individual breast, during which engagement, the breast is shaped and the breast cup properly fitted relative thereto.

Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a breast cup made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a main body portion 12 of segmental circular shape that is provided with a diametrical chord 14 symmetrical therewith which defines a first fold line 14. A pair of intersecting diametrical chords 2,869,553 Patented Jan. 20, 1959 ice 2 which are symmetrically arranged one at each side of the first fold line 14 define second and third fold lines 16, 17. The first fold line defines first and second pairs of sectors 19a, b and 20a, b with the second and third fold lines 16, 17.

Outwardly extending tabs 22 are symmetrically arranged relative to the outer edges of the outermost second pair of sectors 20a, b. A plurality of radially outwardly extending tabs 25, spaced apart by notches 26, are integral with the main body portion 12 of the device, and are joined thereto by fold lines 25a.

The inside surface of the entire periphery of the segmental circular main body portion and the adjacent portions of the end ones of the outwardly extending tabs 22 is coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive to provide a continuous arcuate adhesive band 27. The inside surfaces of the radially outwardly extending tabs 25 are similarly coated. In use, the adhesive band 27 of the breast cup is applied directly to the lower surface portions of the breast while the wearer is bending over from the hips in a forward direction. In this position, the breasts are most supple so that they will probably fill the cup and evenly adhere to the adhesive band. The radially outwardly extending tabs 25 are then pressed into engagement with the steccum, serratus, and anterior wall of the axilla while the wearer remains in the aforementioned position. The fold lines are then creased by folding the outside surfaces of the adjacent ones 19a, 20a and 19b, Ztlb of the first and second pairs of sectors, respectively, into engagement with each other about the diametrical fold line 14. Each one of the first pair of sectors 19a, 19b, is provided with an enlarged central opening 23a, 23b so that the adhesive carried upon the inside surface of the main body portion is engaged with the outside surface of the second pair of sectors 20a, 20b therethrough, thereby maintaining the fold lines in the properly creased positions. This preforms the cup so that the central one of the outwardly extending tabs 22 forms a cup which covers the nipple of the breast. Upon assuming an upright position, the adhered portions of the breast cups actually provide an uplift to the breasts, in addition to forming them to an attractive shape. As is shown in Figure 4, the tabs 22 at the upper end of the cup can be formed to enclose as much of the upper portions of the breast as may be desired, while the radially extending tabs 25 engage the steccum, serratus, and anterior wall of the axilla.

These breast cups are preferably made of disposable paper or similar material so that they may be inexpensively disposed of after each use. The adhesive used is usually inefiective after its first use so that it is almost a necessity that the breast cups be disposed of after a single application. This not only provides a convenience in that there is no necessity to wash the elements, but also makes for a more sanitary garment at a minimum cost. Thus, it will be recognized that these breast cups are particularly useful for use with low cut garments as well as sheer garments so that no visible support means are exposed.

While various changes may be made in the detail con struction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.

What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. A brassiere comprising, in combination, a blank of flexible sheet material having a segmental circular main body portion, a diametrical chord symmetrical with said main body portion defining a first fold line, a pair of diametrical chords symmetrically arranged one at each side of said first fold line defining second and third fold lines, said first fold line defining first and second I pairs of sectors with said second and third fold lines, an adhesive band fastening means associated with the inside surface of said main body portion for securing said brassiere in enclosing engagement with the breast, radially outwardly extending first tabs integral with said main body portion, said tabs being coated with adhesive for securement to the body surroundingthe breasts, said first tabs being concentric with said main body portion, said first pair of sectors, being outermost of said second pair of sectors and partially defining the outermost limit of said main body portion, said second pair of sectors being intermediate said main body portion and said first pair of sectors, second tabs extending outwardly from said first pair of sectors for enclosing the upper portions of the breast, an opening in each one of said second pair of sectors, and adhesive carried by the in side surface of said main body portion engaging with the outside surface of said first pair of sectors through said openings in response to the folding of said outer surfaces of said first and second pair of sectors into engagement with each other about the respective fold lines to receive the parts in predetermined relationship, and to provide a central nipple covering by forming the centralmost part of said second tabs into a cuplike covering.

2. A brassiere comprising, in combination, a blank of flexible sheet material having a segmental circular main body portion, a diametrical chord symmetrical with said main body portion defining a first fold line, a pair of diametrical chords symmetrically-arranged one at each side of said first fold line defining second and third fold lines, said first fold lines defining first and second pairs of sectors with said second and third fold lines, an adhesive band fastening means associated with the inside surface of said main body portion for securing said brassiere in enclosing engagement with the breast, and radially outwardly extending and circumferentially spaced apart first tabs integral with said main body portion, said tabs being coated with adhesive for securement to the body surrounding the breasts.

3. The combination according to claim 2, wherein said first tabs are concentric with said main body portion.

4. The combination according to claim 3, wherein said first pair of sectors is outermost of said second pair of sectors and partially defines the outermost limit of said main bodyportion, said second pair of sectors being intermediate said main body portion and said first pair of sectors.
