tachably connecting the lipstick container casing to the vanity case, and
Fig. 18 is a fragmentary detailed view taken on the section line IS-l 8 of Fig. 17.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the numeral 2 designates a lipstick container casing having a lipstick tube and lipstick 4 therein, the lipstick container casing being attached to a mirror 6, such as a pocket mirror or a rear-view mirror of an automobile, by means of segmental spring-pressed gripping means 8 and lll, which are adapted to be covered by means of a coloring material, as paint or dye, or by means of a thin guard member or casing l2, of plastic material which is adapted to be colored the same color or shade as that of the lipstick 4 carried in the lipstick container casing. By making the casing members or guards l2 of the size and shape to fit over the gripping means for attaching the lipstick container casing to the mirror, the guards may be colored in place of coloring the gripping members, thus avoiding the sampling or trial of the lipstick in order to determine Whether the lipstick color or shade is that desired. Thecasing members or guards l2 may be made of any suitable plastic material adapted to be molded or pressed into the desired form, such as Plexiglas for example, which is methyl methacrylate, and may be purchased on the market in varying thicknesses and shades of color, and may readily be colored by means of a paint or pigment or dye to obtain any desired color or shade of color.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the lipstick container casing may be stamped in a single stamping operation from metal in one piece so as to be provided with a longitudinal slit or opening I4 extending at the top of the casing so as to provide for expansion of the casing when a lipstick tube is inserted therein, so that the container casing is adapted to fit substantially any size of lipstick tube to be inserted into the casing.
The segmental gripping members 8 and I0 are preferably composed of a spring metal so as to rmly hold the lipstick container casing in place on a mirror by clamping action and the surfaces in -contact with the mirror surfaces may be roughened so as to more firmly hold the gripping surfaces in place on the mirror, and the 1 outer surfaces of the gripping members may also be roughened so that it may be more readily painted or dyed to the color of the lipstick to be held in the casing, which will serve not only in indicating the color of the lipstick when the article is purchased but will also assist in indicating the color of the lipstick when a person desires to vary the color of her makeup, depending on whether the lipstick color is to be used under artificial light or in daylight. It is sometimes desirable to carry a variety of colors of lipstick for makeup, as for use on weekend parties and trips to the seashore, for example, and the selection of the desired colors and shades may then be readily made from the owners stock of lipsticks by the mere inspection of the depending colored gripping members of the casing carrying the color of each individual lipstick contained in the corresponding casing.
For use by younger girls and persons of insuicient means to purchase the more expensive lipstick carrying cases, a relatively inexpensive form of the invention may be used, which is illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings, in.
which the lipstick container casing and segmental gripping members may be made of stamped metal or of molded hard rubber or similar compositions having the desired resilience particularly in the gripping members 8" and IB", so as to apply sufcient force to adhere readily to the surface of a mirror, and also to provide sufcient resilience in the container casing 2", or provide sumcient expansion for the insertion of a lipstick tube I6 to be held thereby, the tube I6 containing a lipstick of the same shade or color as the colored area i8 on one of the segmental gripping members, as l0", for example. In this form of the invention, the gripping element l0" may be stamped out from the metal forming the gripping element 8", and bent outwardly and downwardly, as shown in Fig. 8, whereby a single sheet of metal serves to simultaneously form the two segmental gripping elements, which are separated a distance corresponding substantially to the thickness of the ordinary pocket mirror.
The forms of the invention above described are particularly useful for use with mirrors, preferably of the rectangular form, which may be kept in a ladies handbag, such as are generally carried, and the lipstick container casing may serve as a holding means for the mirror while makeup is being applied, so that the surface of the mirror does not become soiled or fogged during use or in ordinary handling. In the use of this form of the invention with the rear-view mirror of an automobile, the lipstick container casing may be retained by the segmental gripping means on the bottom edge or preferably on the right vertical edge of the mirror so as to be accessible continuously for use.
Referring to Figs. 9 and 10 of the drawings, it may sometimes be desirable to employ separate spring-pressed gripping means 2D and 22, which may be made integral by means of a bridge member 2li carrying handles 26 and 28, to which an elastic band 29 may be attached and made adjustable so as to 'lt a lipstick holder, which may thus be attached to a mirror in substantially the same manner as the gripping members above described. It will be apparent also that the combined gripping device and fastening means 29 may be used for attaching any small cylindrical article or article of small external dimensions to a pocket mirror or other article of narrow thickness. It may be used if desired for attaching a pencil to a small note book, for example, or for other similar uses, as will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
Shown in Figs. 11 and l2 of the drawings is a form of lipstick holder which may be made integral with the metal framework of a circular mirror vand which extends from the line of attachment to the said frame in a cylindrical plane, leaving a space 30 to provide for expansion when a tube 32 carrying a lipstick therein is inserted into the carrier casing 34. This form of the invention is adapted for use more particularly for young girls or children of school age, and is relatively inexpensive to make.
The various forms of the invention above described may be varied to some extent to suit particular needs and greater or less renement, depending on the demands of the particular groups or classes for Whom the articles are designed or made. For the more fastidious persons, the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4 is better suited than those of the other forms illustrated, although it will be obvious that the same degree of refinement in manufacture may be used as is acca-scr E applied tol costume jewelry and other articles.
Referring morefin detail toi Figs; Island.' 14 of the. drawings.. a lipstick frame-:member 40;. con-- taining' ay lipstick tube t2', from'.l which ay lipstick be extracted byrmeans of.Y the head. In order to permit the purchaser to attach the, lipstick holder in the position on the vanity case be'st suitedi to the individual, the lipstick container T and the holding means orI perforated extension may be purchased separate from the vanity case alnd readily attaclie'd'l in the' desired position'. For this purpose, a suitable solvent. for lacquer may be used to wet' the bottom or .face o'f` the extension li so that' when the extension is pressed onto the bottom face of the vanity case near the periphery of the case, the lipstick container will be immediately attached without diculty. It will be understood that substantially all vanity cases now on the market carry a lacquer coating over the entire outer surface of the vanity case, and any suitable solvent, such as amyl acetate, acetone or ethyl acetate may be used. The lacquer most generally used for this purpose is nitrocellulose, and a lacquer enamel is a lacquer which contains a pigment. A lowboiling solvent, that is, one boiling below 100 C., such as acetone and ethyl acetate, or mixtures thereof, are preferably used, `although a medium boiling solvent, that is, one boiling between 100 and 150 C., such as amyl acetate, Cellosolve, butyl acetate or butyl propionate may be used. For convenience, however, it is found that nail polish remover, such as is used in any boudoir or bath room, such as Cutex, for example, serves the purpose admirably and dissolves the lacquer by the use of a single drop so that the extension adheres to the face of the vanity case with such a strong bond that it cannot be removed by force. at least without the application 0f additional solvent. The perforations 50 in the extension 48 permit the spreading of the solvent over the connecting surface and allows the solvent to be'evaporated almost immediately through the openings. The elongated slits as illustrated in Fig. 13 have been found best suited for this purpose,l but it will be obvious that other forms or other perforations may be used to advantage to accomplish the same results.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 14, the lipstick container 40 may be attached to the vanity case 46' adjacent the locking device 52, by which the vanity case cover A is locked through the slit opening 5B in the periphery of the cover. The locking device 52 does not form a part of the present invention, but will be understood to comprise a spring member 58 pivoted or attached by means of the pin member 6D, a detent S2 being provided on the spring member 58 to engage the slit opening or projection 56, by means of which the cover of the vanity case is locked in position.

The opening 'I4 is made large enough so that when the slide member 64 is in place in the guide member 66 and the spring extension 1B is engaged in the opening 14, sufficient play is allowed so that the lipstick container 4D' may be moved inwardly suihciently to release the opening or indentation 5S from the detent 62, by which the cover member 5d is unlocked.
Referring to Figs. 17 and 18 of the drawings, the numeral designates a modified form of guide member having a central rectangular opening 02 and lateral grooves or guides 8d and 86 in which the slide member 88, attached to the lipstick casing is adapted to `pass through the opening 92, sho-wn in Fig. 18 of the drawings. When the slide member 80 is in position in the guide member 80, the projection or tongue 94 locks the lipstick casing 90 in the guide member 80. When it is desired to separate the lipstick container casing from the vanity case, the lipstick container casing 00 may be readily withdrawn by simply depressing the tongue member 9d and withdrawing the slide member 88 through the opening 92 while the tongue member remains depressed. The guide member 80 is adapted to be accurately cemented in place adjacent the locking device 52' on the back of the vanity case 46' by means of downwardly -projecting tabs or aps 96 and 98, which serve v.as guides in positioning and centering the guide member 80 directly over the latch by which the cover member of the vanity case is released, so that when the lipstick container casing is in place adjacent the latch or locking device 52', all that is necessary in order to unlock the vanity case cover is to depress the lipstick container casing 90 inwardly, which releases the slit opening or projection 55 from the detent 62, as is apparent from Fig. 14 of the drawings.
It will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the various forms of the invention above described without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined in the claims annexed hereto, and I do not wish to be limited or restricted to the specific details herein set forth, but wish to reserve to myself any and all variations or modifications as may be apparent to those skilled in the art within the scope of the said claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A lipstick container and mirror combination which comprises an expansible unitary lipstick container casing, a metal framework for a circular mirror made integral with said casing, a circular mirror in said framework, said casing extending from the line of attachment to said framework in a substantially cylindrical surface and terminating in a free edge corresponding to an element of the cylindrical surface so as to provide a substantially rectilinear space for circumferential expansion when a lipstick tube is inserted into said container casing and means for holding the mirror in place within said metal framework.
2. The combination of :a lipstick holder and mirror which comprises a metal framework for a mirror, a mirror therein, a substantially cylindrical spring metal carrier casing integrally united to said framework and extending from the line of attachment thereto in a cylindrical plane and leaving an open space to provide for circum- 8. ferential expansion when .a lipstick tube is inserted into said carrier casing.
3. The combination of a lipstick holder and mirror which comprises a metal framework for a circular mirror, a circular mirror therein, a substantially cylindrical spring metal carrier casing integally united to said framework and extending from a straight line of attachment thereto in a cylindrical plane and leaving an open rectilinear space to provide for circumferential expansion of the cylindrical Walls of the carrier casing when a lipstick tube is inserted into said carrier casing.
