Description

J. VARDAROS Feb. 11, 1969 COSMETIC KITS Filed Aug. 26. 1966 INVENTOR 067 W 5 1 FIG. 4
JJQA T ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,426,768 COSMETIC KITS John Vardaros New York, N.Y. (85 Cornell Lane, Hicksville, N.Y. 11801) Filed Aug. 26, 1966, Ser. No. 575,394 US. Cl. 13279 Int. Cl. A4511 40/24 4 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to cosmetic kits and more particularly to paste form cosmetics such as lipstick and mascara wherein a number of such cosmetics are contained in an essentially single unit.
The problem of supplying ditferent paste cosmetics in a single body has existed for years. To my knowledge solutions have been attempted on the basis of separate holders for each cosmetic with means to support all the holders. Obviously, this involved complexities and nuisance if the separable holders became detached.
With the foregoing in mind, I have devised an essentially unitary cosmetic kit where a variety of paste form cosmetics are disposed on a single integral body. Selection of the desired cosmetic is facilitated because they are easily viewed without requiring removal of caps or the like. Further, economies are realized both in the manufacture, and during usage by the consumer.
Specifically, I provide a cylindrical body with multiple, elongated cavities or troughs, each holding a differently colored lipstick and optionally, mascara. A brush applicator is employed. The body may be rotatably mounted in a holder or container formed so as to expose any one cavity for access by the applicator brush. The cavities are so shaped as to compact residual paste during usage thereof, affording considerable economies. The shape of the cavities is also such as to guide the brush and facilitate deposit thereon of the selected cosmetic. Further advantages and improvements, such as in the brush system will be described hereinafter.
The invention will be further understood from the (following description and drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the composite kit;
FIGURE 2 is a top plan view thereof with the cover removed;
FIGURE 3 is a cross-sectional view as taken along the line 3-3 of FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 4 is a cross-sectional view as taken along the line 4-4 of FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 5 is an enlarged fragmentary cross-sectional view as taken along the line 5-5 of FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 6 is an enlarged fragmentary cross-sectional view as taken along the line 6-6 of FIGURE 3; and
FIGURE 7 is an enlarged fragmentary cross-sectional view as taken along the line 77 of FIGURE 3.
The device is shown incorporated in an essentially conventional container comprising a hollow body 10 and hinged cover 11, all of plastic. A mirror 12 is as usual adhered to the cover 11.
Body 10 has a top panel 13 which is formed with a central, elongated access opening 13a. At the four corners of rectangular panel 13, formed essentially as depressions in panel 13, are chambers 14 for housing brush heads 15 as hereinafter explained. Panel 13 also has shallow depression 16 for housing a brush handle 17.
The cosmetic holder comprises an elongated cylindrical body 20 having a plurality of elongated trough-shaped or U-shaped cavities 21 extending substantially the length of body 20 and having open mouths by which they are filled with cosmetic paste 22. Such paste is essentially lipstick which may be of the usual brush-on variety although mascara or the like may also be disposed in one of the cavities. Body 20 has integral partitions 23 separating the cavities 21, said cavities being radially or angularly arranged about the body so as to occupy substantially all of the outer surface of the body except for the partitions 23 and the cavities extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of body 20. As is evident, body 20 may be formed as an extrusion, and end walls 24 and 25 may be secured thereto, said end walls having respective stub shafts 24a and 25a.
Means are provided to rotatably mount body 20 within the container. Thus integral brackets 26 and 27 depend downwardly from the underside of panel 13. Said brackets have openings 28 for rotatably receiving the stub shafts.
Stub shaft 24a has a knurled, axially disposed wheel 30 which protrudes through panel 13 as illustrated in FIGURES 1 and 3, specifically, a well 31 exposing the wheel 30.
It is also desirable to provide detents for determining or fixing the rotational or angular position of body 20 so as to facilitate positioning and usage of the cosmetics as hereinafter explained. For this purpose, I provide a depending arm 32 having a bump 33. The outer face of knurled wheel 30 has four dimples 34 in substantial alignment with the cavities 21. Thus, as wheel 30 is manually rotated to select a desired cosmetic, the dimples 34 will be selectively engaged by the bump 33 so as to resiliently click the body 20 into selected positions.
My invention is practiced as follows:
The cavities 21 may for example contain differently colored lipsticks and/0r mascara. Four brush heads 15 will also be provided. Said brush heads include the brush section 16 which is about of the same width as that of the cavities, e.g. about 7 This features helps in drawing the brush along a cavity, particularly as the paste is used up, the mouth or walls of the cavity guiding the brush.
Brush heads 15 include enlarged disks 35 having central openings 36. Disks 35 comprise flanges which rest on panel 13 over chambers 14. Brush handle 17 has a reduced lower split shaft end 17a. Shaft ends 17a selectively frictionally engages the openings 36 of disk 35. Brush heads 15 are vertically housed in chambers 14. Accordingly, selection of a brush head is most convenient, in fact, not even requiring the user to touch the brush itself. The user will simply press the shaft end 17a of handle 17 into the disk opening. When returning the brush head to its chamber, the user will simply press her finger against disk 35 as a restraint and pull the handle 17 out.
The brushes may be effectively color coded to match the cosmetic colors 22. This is best done by providing dimples 37 adjacent each chamber 14 which dimples are provided with a matching color. Thus, for example, a brush used for red may be returned to the red identified chamber. Alternatively the disks 35 may be colored, although this is somewhat more expensive.
Assume the user desires to apply red lipstick: She will rotate wheel 30 so that the red paste is exposed through access opening She will select the red brush head and will draw the brush along the length of the exposed cavity between its partitions 23 which may guide the brush. It may also be observed that the cavities being narrow and substantially U-shaped, the floor thereof is narrower than the mouth and walls so that as the paste is used the remainder tends to compact at the floor so as to save paste and eifect economies.
Thus I have shown a multiple lipstick or cosmetic kit which conveniently supplies many such pastes in essentially one cylindrical body. Ever mascara, or eye liners may be accommodated. While a preferred embodiment of my invention has been shown, it is obvious that numerous changes and omissions may be made without departing from its spirit.
What is claimed is:
1. A cosmetic kit comprising an elongated body, a plurality of open mouthed cavities formed in said body, each of said cavities containing a supply of cosmetic paste of respectively differing colors, and applicator means for picking up cosmetic paste from a selected cavity and applying it to the person, said body being cylindrical, said cavities extending peripherally of said body and parallel to the longitudinal axis thereof so that each cavity mouth extends substantially the length of said body, and a hollow container having a top panel, said body being rotatably mounted within said container and said top panel having an elongated opening formed therein for selectively exposing a cavity as said body is rotated.
2. A cosmetic kit according to claim 1 and wherein all of said cavities are of the same width and length, and said opening being substantially of said width and length so as to substantially isolate a selected cavity for access thereto by said applicator means, and a wheel connected axially of said body and extending through said top panel whereby said body may be rotatably actuated thereby.
3. A cosmetic kit according to claim 2 and wherein said applicator means comprises a plurality of brush heads of the same number as said cavities, and a single handle adapted to selectively engage any desired brush head, said top panel being formed with depressed chambers respectively housing each of said brush heads, and said brush heads being vertically disposed in their chambers to facilitate engagement with said handle.
4. A cosmetic kit according to claim 3 and wherein said top panel is formed with dimples respectively adjacent each chamber, said dimples being colored to correspond with the colors of the pastes in the respective cavities so as to identify the predetermined chamber for housing each brush head.
