2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in cigarette cases and has for its primary object to provide an ash receiver constructed as a part of the case.
A further important object of the invention is to provide a cigarette case having separate compartments therein, one of which is adapted to hold cigarettes while the other compartment is adapted to removably receive a receptacle for holding ashes, burnt cigarettes and match sticks and providing a hinged lid for the ash receiver adaptedfor opening movement by the lid of the cigarette case.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter' described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on a line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view through the top of the ash receiver and showing the lid thereforv in closed position.
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the lid in open position, and
Figure 5 is an end elevational view showing the operating connection between the lid for the ash receiver and the lid for the cigarette case.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates a cigarette case having a vertical partition d therein to separate the case into a cigarette compartment i and an ash receptacle compartment t.
The side edges/of the top of the case 5 are formed with upstanding flanges t, the flanges having channels i0 in their inner surfaces forming guides for slidably receiving the edges of a cover II, the upper surface of the cover having :finger-engaging recesses I2 therein to facilitate sliding of the cover in either direction to uncover either the compartment I or the compartment 8.
An ash receiving receptacle I3 is snugly tted in the compartment 8, the bottom of the compartment 3 being open to receive the receptacle 2, I3 therethrough andthe bottom of the receptacle has its edge milled or serrated asshown at I4 to facilitate gripping of the receptacle to remove the same from the compartment.
Shallow recesses I5 are formed on theinner walls of the compartment 8 and adapted to receive outwardly pressed projections I6 on the sides of the receptacle to secure the receptacle against accidental displacement in the compartment 8.
A lid Il is provided for the top of the receptacle I3 and is hingedly attached at one edge to the top of the partition 6 by means of a spring hinged member I8 for yieldably maintaining the lid Il in its closed position.
An upstanding hook i9 is carried by the lid I1 adjacent its hinged edge and adapted for engagement by a U-shaped hook 20 projecting. downwardly from the underside of the sliding lid I I and transversely with respect to the hook I9.
Accordingly, upon a sliding movement of the lid il to uncover the top of the receptacle I3 the hook member 2t will engage the hook I9 and open the lid il to permit ashes or other refuse to be deposited in the receptacle. Upon the sliding of the lid II in an opposite direction the hook 2t! will disengage the hook I9 and the lid II will then expose the top of the chamber 'I to permit removal of cigarettes therefrom.
A funnel-shaped cigarette extinguisher EI is attached to one of the walls of the receptacle I3 adjacent its upper end.
It is believed that the details of construction and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A pocket cigarette case having a cigarette compartment and an ash receiving compartment therein, a removable receptacle positioned in said ash receiving compartment, an outer main lid slidably mounted on the case and in its closed position covering` both of said compartments, a separate inner hinged lid for the ash receptacle, and inter-engaging hooks carried by said lids and cooperatively engaging each other upon an opening movement of the sliding lid in one direction to thereby open the hinged lid.
2. A pocket cigarette case openable throughout one end thereof and divided into a cigarette compartment and a separate parallel adjoining ashreceiving compartment, an outer sliding lid for the openable end of the case, said lid in its closed position covering both the cigarette compartment and the ash-receiving compartment,` a sep- REFERENCES A The following references are of record in the" arate self-closing hinged lid underlying said outer sliding lid and normally covering said ash-receivl ing compartment, and interengageable means on .me of this patent' said lids and cooperatively engaging each other 5 UNITED STATES PATENTS upon a sliding movement oi said outer sliding Number Name Date lid in one direction to thereby open said inner 1,293,062 Erdey Feb 4 1919 hinged lid and upon a sliding movement of said 1,840,664 Gerstheimer ""Jam '12' 1932 outer sliding lid in an opposite direction to there- 1,632,335 Hiermg "June 14' 1927 by release said inner hinged lid to its self-closl0 1.4621846 13e11 July 24J 1923 ing operation and a continuation of said opposite directional movement of the outer sliding lid un- FOREIGN PATENTS covering the cigarette compartment.
