Be it known that I, VVILFRED P. Lnwrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State'of'h/lissouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Smokers Cases, of which the following is a specification;

lhis invention relates to receptacles, particularly to receptacles for smokers articles, and has for its object the provision'of a receptacle adapted to be carried inthe pocket and so constructed asto contain cigarettes or pipe tobacco, a box of matches of the safety type, and further provided with a compartment for the deposit of ashes.

An important object is" the provision of a case of this character provided with a partition arranged in pivotal relation with one side wall and movable to lie against the wall in non-obstructing position so that the entire interior of the receptacle may be used for the storage of tobacco or cigarettes, the partition being also movable to "extend across the interior of the receptacle to form an ash receiving compartment. A further object is the provision of a receptacle of this character having one side wall provided with an opening normally closed by a sliding plate which may be moved to expose the opening so that tobacco may be shaken from the receptacle in filling apipe or making a cigarette.

A further object is the provision of a receptacle of thischaracter, the compartments of which are provided with separate cover portions.

Another object is the provision ofa receptacle of this character which has its match box holding portion provided with a spring tongue engaging the matchbox whereby the match box'will be frictionally held in place, this portion of the receptacle being further provided with an opening whereby one striking surface of the box will be exposed.

An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be extremely simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly etficient and durable in use, and a general improvement of the art.

With the above and other objects and advantages in View the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a. perspective view of the re ceptacle in its closed position with the slide moved to expose thetobacco discharging opening.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the cover movedto its open position and the slide closed and showin the movable partition swung to its non-obstructing position.

Referring more particularly to the draw ing the numeral 10 designates the body portion of the device which is formed as a shallow rectangular receptacle which comprises the bottom 11, side walls 12 and 13, and end walls let and 15 The side wall 13 is provided adjacent the end wall 15 with an opening 16 which is normally covered by a plate '17 slidable upon'the side wall 13 and guided.

flange 23 bearing upon the bottom 11 of the receptacle. As shown in Fig. 2 this partition plate 22 may be swung so as to lie against the side wall 12, or as shown in Fig. 5, the partition plate 22 may be swung to extend transversely of the receptacle to divide it into two compartments designated by the numerals 2d and 25. The compartment '24 is adapted for the storage of cigarettes and the compartment 25 is designed as an ash receiver. The flange 23 limits the move ment of the partition.

A cover plate 26 is hinged upon the upper edge of the end wall 15 and is of sufficient length. to cover the compartment 24:. A see ond cover plate 27 is hinged upon the free end of the cover plate 26 and is of a length to cover the compartment 25. The cover plate 26 is provided with side flanges 28 engaging against the outer sides of the side walls 12 and 1.3 and the cover plate 27 is provided with side flanges 29 alining with the flanges 28 and is further provided with an end flange 30 provided with a recess 31 engageable with a projection 32 on the end wall 14 whereby the cover may be held in closed position.

It will be seen that when the transverse partition 22 is arranged as shown in Fig. 5, the cover plate 27 may be swung open and the compartment 25 used as an ash receiver. Opening the cover 27 does not necessitate opening the cover 26 which will be allowed to remain over the compartment 24: so that ashes cannot be accidentally dropped upon the cigarettes disposed within the compartment 2%. The partition plate 22 is of the same height as the side walls and end walls of the device so that when the cover plates are in their closed positions and the device is carried in the pocket the ashes will not 'fall out of the compartment 25 and into the compartment 24:.

When desired, the partition plate 22 may be swung into the position shown in Fig. 2 so that the entire interior of the receptacle may be used for the storage of tobacco which may be conveniently removed therefrom by shaking it through the opening 16 exposed by sliding the plate 17 outwardly. Of course it is understood that if desired the covers 26 and 27 may be opened so that access may be had to the tobacco.

, The device as thus far described may be considered as complete, though for the sake of additional convenience I preferably provide the receptacle with a match box holding portion designated by the numeral 33. This portion may be formed as a separate structure and secured upon the end Wall 15, or as shown in the drawings, its bottom wall 3i may be a continuation of the bottom Wall 11 and its top and end Walls 35 and 36 respectively be formed integrally upon the end wall 15. In either event, this portion 33 has its sides open so that a match box, indicated at 37 may be disposed therein. The bottom 34 of the member 33 is cut as shown to provide a tongue 39 bearing resiliently against the box 37 for holding it firmly in place. The Wall 36 is provided with a cut out portion 40 to expose one of the striking surfaces of the match box as will be readily understood.

From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a combination ease for the use of smokers whereby cigarettes or tobacco, and matches may be conveniently carried, and provided with a portion adapted to serve as an ash tray in case of emergency. It will also be noted that the construction is such that tobacco disposed within the device may be conveniently shaken therefrom into a cigarette paper or into a pipe with great ease.

It will of course be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form and structural details as will not depart from the spirit of the invention nor the scgpe of the subjoined claim.

Iaving thus described my invention I claim A device of the character described comprising a receptacle, a partition plate hinged upon one side Wall of the receptacle, a flange on the bottom edge of said partition bearing upon the bottom of the receptacle, the free longitudinal edge of said flange being engageable against the adjacent end wall of the receptacle whereby to define a compartment, the free end of said flange being beveled whereby to permit swinging movement of said partition into said compartment forming position, and a cover hinged upon said receptacle and including a hinged portion adapted to cover said compartment, said last named hinge connection being disposed in alinement with said partition when said partition is in compartment forming position, and said partition being swingable to lie flat against the side of the receptacle upon which it is hinged.
