Description
May 10, 1949. A. M. HILLERY 1 COMBINED COMB AND NAIL FILE Filed Feb. 10, 1948 IN V EN TOR.
Patented May 10, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINED COME AND NAIL FILE Arthur M. Hillery, Leominster, Mass.
Application February 10, 1948, Serial No. 7,325
2 Claims.
The invention relates to a combination comb and nail file particularly adapted for pocket and personal use.
The principal object of the invention resides in the provision of a comb having a back, the back having a slot therein extending inwardly from an end thereof, in combination with a nail file which fits into the slot and is provided with a head of substantially the same width as the back of the comb and forming in appearance an extension thereof when the nail file is located in the slot, the back of the comb being provided with an exterior ridge which extends transversely of the slot adjacent the opening thereof for cooperation with a pocket clip attached to the head of the nail file and provided with a raised portion and a depression, the raised portion receiving the ridge and thus detachably securing the file to the comb under all circtunstances, the depression acting as a clip to detachably secure the comb and the file as a unit in the pocket of the user.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a comb and nail file combination;
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the nail file;
Fig. 3 is a view in edge elevation of the comb;
Fig. 4 is an edge view of the comb per se;
Fig. 5 is an edge view of the comb with the nail file attached; and
Fig. 6 is an edge view of the nail file.
As shown in Fig. 1, there is provided a comb generally indicated at 10. This comb is of any usual or well known construction insofar as the teeth are concerned, but the back of the comb I2 is wider than normal and contains a slot or opening l4 extending from one end of the comb inwardly past the center thereof as clearly shown.
Adjacent the open end of the slot the comb is provided with an external raised ridge I6 extending transversely of the comb back and of the slot l4 and being located closely adjacent the open end of the slot M.
The nail file is indicated at I8 and this nail file is largely conventional except for the provision of a head 20 of a width same as that of the comb and back, extending parallel to the width of the nail file and curved to conform to the edge of the comb, see 22, Fig. 1, so that the head acts, in appearance, as an extension of the comb back when the file is housed in the slot.
The head 20 has attached thereto a pocket clip generally indicated at 24, this pocket clip being provided with a pair of depressions 26, see Fig. 6 forming a pair of spaced raised portions 28 and 30, the latter receiving the ridge [6 as clearly shown in Fig. 5, to detachably secure the nail file to the comb so that it can be carried in pocket or purse in a loose manner but so that the nail file will not become detached from the comb; and, at the same time, the depression to the left in Fig. 5 may be used to detachably secure the unit in a pocket in the usual manner of a pencil clip, the comb and the file being still in the form of a unit which will not become accidentally separated.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
1. The combination With a comb having a longitudinal slot in the back thereof and a ridge on the comb back adjacent an end of the slot; of a file for housed reception in the slot and a pocket clip on the file, said pocket clip comprising an article receiving raised portion receiving the ridge in fully housed condition of the file and having a depression adapted to clip the combined comb and file to a pocket.
2. A comb and file unit comprising a comb having a longitudinal slot in the back thereof extending inwardly from one end, an external ridge on the comb back at said one end, the ridge being located transversely of the slot, a file for reception in the slot, a head on the file having an underside conformin to the end of the comb back and overlying the slot opening, a pocket clip secured to the head, said clip having a raised portion receiving the ridge to secure the comb and file together, said clip also having a depression spaced from the raised portion to detachably secure the unit in a pocket.
