1 Claim.

This invention relates to a twine or cord cutter, the primary object of the invention being to provide a device of this character includin a wide base, whereby it may be positioned on a counter or similar supporting surface for use in cutting twine or heavy cords, by extending the twine or cord through the guide slot to the cutting blade.

Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, including a vertically adjustable and removable guard so arranged with respect to the blade of the cutter, that the person using the device will be guarded against injury by the knife.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a cutter wherein the twine or heavy cord may be inserted at either end of the guide slot, to contact the blade of the cutter.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawing:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a twine or cord cutter, constructed in accordance with the invention.

Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a plan view of the cutter.

Referring to the drawin in detail, the device comprises a body indicated in general by the reference character 5, the body having a wide base 6, to the lower surface of which is secured a suitable cushioning material, such as felt or rubber, indicated by the reference character 1.

Rising from the base 6 at a point intermediate the side edges thereof, is a blade supporting section 8, which has its upper edge curved downwardly towards the center thereof from the ends of the section 8. A recess 9 is formed in one side surface of the section 8, the recess being of a length equal to the length of the usual safety razor blade, which in the present showing is indicated by the reference character Ill. The depth of the recess 9 is such that upper edge of the blade l0 when positioned within the recess, will be extended slightly above the upper edge of the section 8. i

The reference character II indicates the blade guard, which is formed with an upper main section l2, that is of a width equal to the thickness 2 of the section 8, the length of the guard being equal to the length of the recess 9, so that the entire length of the cutting edge of the blade exposed for cutting the twine or cord, will be guarded to prevent injury by the blade to persons using the device.

The guard also includes a shank I3 which is formed with an elongated opening to accommodate headed screw M, which also moves through an opening in the blade Ill and passes into the threaded opening l5 of the section 8.

Thus it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a twine or cord holder having a twine or cord guide slot so disposed that a cord to be cut will be positioned under the blade guard at either end thereof.

It will also be seen that because of the elongated opening in the shank I3, the guard may be adjusted to regulate the siZe of the opening directly above the blade, thereby adapting the device for use in cutting twine or heavy cord.

While I have shown and described the device as a cutter to be used on a desk or similar supporting surface, wherein the cutter may be moved from place to place on the desk, it is to be understood that openings may be formed in the base 6, so that it may be secured permanently to a supporting surface, should it be desired to use the device in this manner.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

A cord cutter comprising a body including a base, and a narrow upstanding section, the upper edge thereof being curved downwardly from the ends thereof, said upstanding section having a recess, a blade positioned in the recess, a guard including a section overlying the blade in spaced relation therewith, a shank forming a part of the guard, said shank having an elongated opening, positioned against the blade, and a headed screw extending through the shank, blade and upstanding section, securing the guard and blade in position.
