Description

Oct. 5, 1937. A, ABE, 2,095,164
STORE KNIFE Filed June 26, 1936 7 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS WITNESS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE s'roRE KNIFE Charles A. Babb, Fostoria, Ohio Application June 26, 1936, Serial No. 87,544
2 Claims.
This invention relates to knives for cutting string, paper and cartons made from materials which may be severed and has for the primary object the provision of a simple and inexpensive device of this character. which employs a double edge blade and a holder therefor whereby both edges of the blade are exposed for use and acts I to vary the depth of cutting of one of the cutting edges of the blade and for guiding the movement of the device relative to a carton so that when cutting the latter the severance will be in a wall close to an adjoining wall, consequently reducing the chances of mutilating the contents of the carton.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consistsin certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the. following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a knife constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view illustrating the device.
Figure 3 is an elevational View showing the knife in the act of severing the carton.
Figure i is a sectional view taken on the line 4- 5 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a handle having integral therewith a shank Z. The handle I and shank 2 are constructed from a single length of material which is bent upon itself to first form the handle and then the shank. Pins 3 secure to the shank a guide 4 and also act to removably secure to the shank a blade 5 and a guard 6. The blade 5 has double cutting edges, the portions above are exposed when assembled on the shank, one edge being employed for cutting string, paper or any other material, while the other edge operates in conjunction with the guide 4 and guard 6 in severing a carton, as shown in Figure 3.
The guide 4 includes angularly related portions 1, 8 and 9. The portions 1 and 8 are arranged at right angles to each other and the portion 9 extends at an angle to the portion 8, as shown in Figure 3,.so that when the device is adapted to the carton the handle will extend upwardly and at an angle to the top wall of the carton with the portion 8 riding on the top wall and the portion 1 engaging one of the vertical walls of the carton. The guide 4 forms a permanent part of the handle while the guard 6 is removable therefrom.
The blade has a slot to receive the pins and the guard 6 including the angularly related portions iii and H is provided with keyhole slots l2 in the portion H to engage grooves [3 formed in the pins. The keyhole slots l2 permit easy and quick application and removal of the guard from the shank and permit the guard to be adjusted endwise of the blade for the purpose of regulating the depth of cut made by the blade when acting on a carton. By reference to Figure 3, it will be seenthat the portion ID of the guard rides upon the top wall of the carton and that the blade severs the top wall at an angle and in the direction of the vertical wall of the carton by the portion 1 of the guide. The portion iii of the guard is substantially triangular shape and lies in a plane with the portion 8 of the guide so as to cooperate with said portion 8 in slidably supporting the device on the top wall of the carton.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A knife comprising a handle, a shank secured on said handle, a guide secured to the shank and including angularly related portions with one portion secured to the shank and the other portions arranged at right angles to each other and with one of the latter-named portions at an angle to the portion secured to the shank, a double edge blade removably secured to the shank, and a guard for the blade removably secured to the shank and including angularly related portions with one of said portions paralleling the portion of the guide secured to the shank and the other portion of the guard lying in a plane with one of the other portions of the guide.
2. A knife comprising a handle, a shank integral with the handle, pins secured to the shank, a guide secured to the shank by said pins and the latter having grooves, a slotted double edge blade mounted on the pins, a guard having keyhole slots to receive the pins with the walls of the slots entering the grooves of the pins whereby the blade and-guard are releasably secured to the shank and whereby the guard may be adjusted endwise of the blade.
