This invention relates generally to head-coverings.

My invention has for its primary object the provision of a head-covering so formed and constructed for selective use either as a hat or as the body of a parasol.

My invention has for a further object the provision of a head-covering of the type and for the purpose stated which is simple and inexpensive in form and structure, attractive in appearance when used either as a hat or parasol, and readily and conveniently converted for its respective uses, my invention also contemplating the association with the head-covering when in parasol formation of a supporting-rod normally usable as a walking-cane.

And with the above and other objects in View, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts presently described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the headcovering of my invention as when convertibly employed as a parasol;

Figure 2 is a reduced inverted plan view of the head-covering for use as a hat;

Figure 3 is a reduced longitudinal sectional view of the head-covering in parasol form, as in Figure 1; and

Figure 4 is a perspective view of a rod or staff selectively usable either as a cane or with the head-covering in converting the same into parasol-formation.

Referring now in more detail and by reference characters to the drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the present invention, A designates the head-covering, which, as shown, is preferably in the form of a broad brimmed hat of relatively shallow conoidal shape. The headcovering A is also preferably woven of flat pressed straw, although it may be stated in this connection that the head-covering A may be in a wide variety of broad brimmed shapes and styles and constructed froma wide assortment of conventional hat body materials, such as molded papiermach, woven cellophane, starched cloth, or the like.

i designates a substantially disk-shaped section of any suitable air-impervious material, such as celluloid or the like, which is disposed transversely across the dome or apex a of the crown b of the head-covering A, the disk I having its marginal portion 2 bent flange-wise downwardly in peripheral engagement with the inside surface 0 of the crown b and secured thereto by a line of thread-stitches 3. As so disposed and secured, the body of the disk I is substantially smooth, even, and flat, the disk I being positioned through its reduced diametrical dimension entirely in the free space at the apex of the crown b above and out of contact with the head of the wearer when the head-covering A is employed normally as a hat.

Provided for parasol-forming association or combination with the head-covering A, is a rod or staff 4 having a conventional ferrule 5 at its lower extremity, in simulation of a walking-stick or cane. Fixed, as by means of a mountingscrew 6, upon its upper or head-end, is a concave flexible rubber disk or vacuum cup I, which functions, when pressed facewise against the under or outer face at of the disk l, in detachably securing the cane 4 endwise to the head-covering A in parasol-forming arrangement, as best seen in Figures 1 and 3.

It will, of course, be obvious that both the headcovering A and the rod or cane 4 may be decoratively coated and trimmed in complementary or matching colors and provided superficially with any suitable artistic design or effect. Also, if desired, the head-covering A may be provided with a plurality of symmetrically spaced eyelets 8, serving both to ventilate the crown and provide apertures through which, while not shown, beautifying tie ribbons or strings may be threaded.

Selectively, the head-covering A may be placed upon the head and worn as a hat, the staff 4 being carried in the hand as a cane or swaggerstick. However, should a parasol be desired or required for some reason of taste, convenience, or the like, the head-covering A is quickly converted into parasol-formation by attachment thereto of the cane 4.

The cane or staff 4 may be readily, when desired, detached from the head-covering A, and thus the head-covering A separately provides a unique, economical, lightweight, attractive hat of unusual wide utility and combined with the cane 4 an equally attractive and serviceable parasol or sunshade.

It should be understood that changes and modifications in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the headcovering may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-,

1. In combination, a cane-like member, a headcovering having a crown selectively usable as a hat, an air-impervious disk fixed within the dome of the crown of the head-covering, and a vacuumcup carried by the cane-like member for engagement with the disk for detachably securing said member endwise to the crown for converting the head-covering into parasol-formation.

2. A head-covering having a crown, an airimpervious member rigidly secured along its peripheral margin to the crown and extending flatwise transversely across the dome of the crown, and an elongated rod-like member removably mounted in endwise abutment centrally of, and

depending downwardly from, the air-impervious member.

3. A head-covering having a. crown, an air-impervious member rigidly secured along its peripheral margin to the crown and extending fiatwise transversely across the dome of the crown, a rubber suction cup removably mounted on and centrally of the outwardly presented face of the air-impervious member, and. an elongated rodlike member rigidly mounted in endwise abutment on, and centrally of, the rubber suction cup.
