ATTORNEY Patented Aug.. l2, 1924.'
foljlfcjv'iiigis a specification. ,t
n ninveritiofn relates to hats and 4hasfor primaryfobjeetthefprovision of a hat l s of permanenti body portion and a reversible or interchangeable covering' for verte-d from one design to another."f'ff'V A, r 1,further, object, Qf, the invention is to providea hat of this* character in which the covering for the crown may be yfirmly secured in a symmetrical position upon the band of the hat frame.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a hat of this character embodying` a relatively iniiexible member upon the band of the hat frame and an elastic inem- .ber upon the covering of the structure, the latter serving to co-act with the former to establish a Hrm connection Ibetween the parts Without unduly contracting the frame or band of the hat against the head of the wearer.
TWith the above and other objects in View which vvill appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangements of parts Which Will hereinafter be fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings, has been illustrated a single and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood, that no limitations are necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications Within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
Figure 1, is a perspective vievv of the hat.
Figure 2, is a similar view showing the covering adjusted to its reversed position.
lligure 3, is a transverse section through a portion of the hat.
In carrying the invention into practice, I make use of a suitable hat frame 5, Which, except in respect to parts which l Will refer to hereinafter, may be of any suitable Well known construction. I am not materially interested in the form, shape, or design of the frame, nor is it important that i imitar. ,nnennsfo upon the head so as to allow for instantly c changing the dress or make up of the hat to suit varying purposes, at the same time enabling the user to cause the hat to harmonize With a dress of a particular color or style. This interchangeable feature of the covering of the hat also permits the latter to be properly used for extremely dressy occasions asV Well as ordinary occasions. The covering 13, is in the form of a supple mental or detachable crown. lt is substantially of sack formation so that it Will adapt itself to the general form of the frame of the hat and snugly conform to the band at the juncture of the latter With the brim of the hat. For this reason, lpreferably provide the marginal or free edge of this sacklike covering `With an expansible hem 14, in which is arranged an elastic band 16. This band is adapted to be expanded so that the covering can be freely passed over the fixed crown of the hat and then contracted at its marginal edge around said band 6, the elastic band 16 circumscribing the stiff ring 12. In this manner, the cover is firmly secured in position and yet it can be quickly With drawn from the hat and turned completely inside out and re-arranged upon the hat so as to give to it an entirely different appearance. For this reason, the covering is respectively provided on its opposite side with designs of different kinds or it may be formed of relatively diiferent colors. lit may be otherwise formed and constructed so that various similar schemes can be carried into effect Which Will materially give characteristic changes to the general make up of the hat. In some cases, l find it desirable to construct at least one side lof the detachable covering of a material and color conforming with the brim 7 of the hat. The opposite side oit this covering can be of an entirely different scheme or make up so as to give to the hat a more dressy and attractive appearance.
By causing the elastic band 16, to embrace the relatively rigid ring 12, I guard against unduly contracting the band of the hatagainst th`e head of the wearer.
While I have herein fully shown and described and have pointed out in the appended claims, certain novel features of construction, arrangement and operation which characterize my invention, .it will be understood by those skilled in the art that variousomiss'ons, substitutions, and changes inthe forms, proportions, sizes, of the materials used, and of their operation, may be made without-departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new 4is .1.v A hat. comprising a band, abrim connected with the lower part of the band, a rigid ring-shaped member at the junction of the band with the brim, a crown member adapted to be placed over the band and an elastic strip at the mouth of the crown member for contracting the same against the ring member.
2. A hat comprising a band, a brim connected with the lower end of the band, a cap-shaped lining having its lower portion arranged within the space formed by the band with zts lower edge connected with the' brim at its point of junction with the band, a rigid ring member at the lower edge of the band, and a removable cap-shaped crown member having a marginal hem and a strip ot' elastic material in the hem and arranged to contract the mouth o the crown member against the ring member ior detachably holding the crown member in place.
In testimony whereof I have aiiixed my signature.
EMMA J. HUGHES.
