Be 1t known that BENJAMIN B. TURGHIN,

- a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, borough of Brooklyn, in.

the county of Kings and- State of New York, has invented certain new and useful- Improvements in Ladies and Childrens Hats, of which the following is a specificapart be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of this invention viewed with the hat held in an inverted position so that the interior crown and inside of the rim are visible;

Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the novel hat lining embodied in this invention; and

Fig. 3 is a detailed section cut along line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Referring in detail to the drawing, indicates the crown and 11 the brim of the hat. These members may be of any desired shape. Within the crown portion 10 is a hat lining 14; which will be more fully hereinafter described. The latter is attached interiorly to the lower edge ofthe crown and adjacent the brim by the row of stitches 15 passing through the crown and the extreme lower edge 16 of the lining. The lining is slightly turned in to provide an attaching edge 17 Wherethrough sa d stit hes 15 a e taken.

The hat lining is-made ina plurality of sections 18, 19, 20, etc., united to each other by rows of stitches'21, andjare so shaped as to provide when assembleda configurationcorresponding to the shape of the crown of the'hat. In theform shown in the drawing, the hat crown is of ellipsoidal shape at the top and the lining sections 18, 19, 20,- etc, are of tapered construction so that when they are united they form a dome shaped configuration which conforms to the crown.

In uniting the sections, the adjoining free ends are turned outward forming edges 18, 19, 20 which are offset by the rows of stitches 21 joining the adjacent section. Secured to each of the sections 18, 19, 20, etc., adjacent the bottom thereof, .is a separate elastic member 28, 24, 25.' Preferably these elastic members are stitched to corresponding adjacent free edges 18, 19,'

20 as shown at 23, 24, 25. It will be understood that in this manner a broken elastic band is provided which extends circumferentially of the lining adjacent the bottom thereof, the effect of which is to gather the sections in, the particular elastic member bridging a particular section acting individually on this section to draw the material thereof together.

In use, a hat provided with the lining described will readily conform itself to the particular contour of the wearers head, the irregularities of the shape of the head being taken care of by the particular lining section covering the region of the head where such irregularity occurs. In this way, when the hat is placed in position on the wearers head, the adjustment for conforming to the contour thereof takes place only adjacent the rim portion without affecting or distorting the general shape of the crown. The adjustment provided for by the separate elastic members and the sectional lining construction is not only effective in conforming the hat to the brim portion of the head, but also takes care of the various styles in which the wearer may wear the hair, the particular sections of the crown affected readily conforming themselves so as to make the hat comfortable on the head.

As is well known, there is generally no great divergence in size in childrens hats and where childrens hats are constructed in accordance with this invention the parts may be all of the same standard size, the adjustment fiorded by the hat lining construction Lin-l described to l the hat for varying sizes of childrens heads. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Lette'rs Patent: 7 I v 1.
