FABRIC TAKE-UP DEVICE FOR FLAT KNITTING MACHINES Filed Jan. 28, 1937 INVENTOR JAMES L. GETAZ BY HIS ATTORNEYS 3 II Patented Aug. 8, 1939 T PATENT j OFFICE t'erwoven Stockng Company,
New Brunswick,
N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application January 28, 1937, Serial No. 122,872 Claims. (01. 66149) This invention relates to fabric take-up devices for use with flat knitting machines and more particularly with machines for knitting full fashioned hosiery and it is an object of this invention to provide an improved fabric takeup device for machines for knitting full fashioned hosiery, the device being of such construction that injury to the fabric by the welt hook bar is prevented. It is also an object of this invention to provide a fabric take-up device having a. drum upon which the fabric is wound and in which the welt hook bar is received whereby injury to thefabric is prevented.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view 18 of a fabric take-up mechanism in accordance with this invention; and
Figures 2 and 3 are vertical transverse sectional views of the take-up mechanism shown in Figure 1, taken as on lines 22 and 3-3, respec- 20 tively of Figure 1. l I
In the drawing there is shown a fabric takeup device in accordance with this invention for holding knitted fabric continuously under tension as the fabric leaves the needle bars of the knitting machine.- The take-up device shown comprises a drum l8 journalled on a shaft ll -rotatably mounted in bearings I! attached to the machine frame or other suitable support. Fixed on the shaft II at the ends of the drum I8 are pulleys l3 having attached thereto, in position to be wound thereon, bands or strips ii of webbing which are also connected to a welt hook bar 42 of usual construction. Also fixed on the nected to a weight (not shown) in such manner that the weight serves to rotate the pulley ll, shaft H and pulleys IS. The drum I8 is grooved projects into the path of the welt hook bar 42 I as the abutments so that as the welt hook bar is drawn into the groove l8 in the drum 18 the welt hook bar op-. erates the latch 45 to release thedrum I8 so the drum is free to be rotated by the welt hook bar to wind the fabric thereon. Should the drum l8 be rotated more than a single revolution the welt hook bar 42 |8a pass the latch l5.
What is claimed is- 1. In a knitting machine, a rotatable drum, a welt hook bar and means operating said bar to rotate said drum to wind fabric thereon.
2. In a knitting machine, a rotatable drum, latch means preventing rotation of said drum, a welt hook bar and means operating said bar to release said latch and rotate said drum to wind fabric thereon.
3. In a knitting machine, a drum rotatable for winding fabric thereon, said 'drum' being grooved to receive a welt hook bar, latch'means for holding said drum stationary, a welt hook bar, means for operating said welt hook bar to draw fabric to the drum and means for operating said latch by said welt hook bar to permit rotation of said drum by said bar operating means.
4. In a knitting machine, a drum rotatable for winding fabric thereon, said drum being grooved to receive'a welt hook bar, latch means for hold-. ing said drum stationary, a welt hook bar, and operating means for engaging said bar in said groove and operating said latch to release said drum, said bar operating means causing said bar to rotate said drum. v
5. In a knitting machine, a welt hook bar, a drum rotatable for winding fabric thereon, said drum being slotted to receive the welt hook bar with the hooks of saidbar drawn within said drum, latch means for holding said drum stationary in position to receive the welt hook bar in the slot and means for operating said welt hook bar to draw fabric to said drum, said operating means being arranged to drawsaid welt hook bar into said slot and cause said welt hook bar to operate said latch means to release-said drum for rotation and rotate said drum for winding fabric thereon.
