Description

Nov. 5, 1935. w. MURPHEY DETACHABLE ELASTIC WAISTBAND Filed Feb. 21, 1955 Patented Nov. 5, 1935 STATES T FEE Ara 2 Claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel detachable elastic band for waist suits, union suits and sleeping garments, and pajamas of all kinds, to permit of the elastic band being removed when the garment is sent out for laundry, thereby causing much longer wear, and toprovide a novel hollow rib separate from the elastic band and in which the elastic band is removably mounted and in which it can slide back and forth, affording more comfort to the wearer. I attain these and other objects of my invention by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of the invention applied to a garment, portions of the garment being broken away and a portion of the hollow rib I also being broken away to show the position of the elastic band in same;
Fig. ,2 is a plan view of the elastic band removed from the garment;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of one of the ends of the rib member I, showing the means of attaching same to the garment; and
Fig.4 is a section of line 4-4 of Fig. 1, the body of the garment not being shown.
Like numerals designate like parts of each of the views.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, I pro- Vide, in Waist suits, union suits and sleeping garments, a novel fiat cloth rib I disposed horizontally and ailixed tothe waist of the garment and having an elastic band 2 detachably mounted in the same. Band 2 is provided with preferably fabric tabs 3 on each end, said tabs each being formed of two strips of fabric or other suitable material secured to each other and to the ends of the elastic band 2 by the stitching IS, the tabs also having buttonholes t to receive the buttons 4. Buttons 4 are attached by the tape 5 to the pin stays l which are fastened by the lines of stitching 22 to the body of the garment, as shown in Fig. 3. Near each end of the hollow fabric rib l are buttonholes 8 through which the elastic band 2 is inserted and removed.
I provide upper reinforcing strips 9 overlapping the front body portion 29 and the rear body portion M of the waist of the garment. I provide a waist seam ill by which one edge of the hollow fabric rib l is secured to the garment. I also provide downwardly extending seams II, l2 and V I3 whereby the lower back portion of thegarment is formed with the sections l5, l6 and ll, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
In use the elastic band 2 is inserted through the buttonholes 8 and through the channel 2! of the hollow fabric rib l, and the tabs 3 have their buttonholes 6 engaged over the buttons 4 as shown in Fig. 1. When it is desired to send the garment to the laundry the tabs are unbuttoned and the elastic band is removed from the hollow rib- I before the garment is sent to the laundry, so that the garment may be sent to the laundry without the elastic band. The band thereby is prevented from being damaged by passing through the laundry with the rest of the garment, and a longer life for the garment as a whole is obtained. Each of the buttons 5 being fastened to the garment by short cords or tapes 5 allows a certain amount of movement of the band up and down, thereby affording more comfort to the wearer of the garment.
What I claim is:-
1. In combination with a garment of the type described, a hollow fabric rib having the lower edge thereof fastened to the body of the garment and having buttonholes near opposite ends of the fabric rib, an elastic band insertable in the buttonholes and through the hollow rib and sulficiently short to tend to draw thegarment together at the waist, said elastic band having tabs stitched to the ends thereof, said tabs having buttonholes, buttons engageable in the buttonholes of the aforesaid tabs, and short tapes securing the buttons to the garment whereby to allow some up and down movement of the elastic band.
2. In combination with a waist suit, union suit or sleeping garment having reinforcing strips overlapping the front and rear body portions of the garment, and having a waist seam, a hollow fabric ribbed tube horizontally disposed on the garment and having its lower edge secured to the waist seam, said tube having buttonholes near its ends; and an elastic band insertable through said tube and having fabric tabs on each end, said tabs being formed of two strips of material secured to each other and to the ends of the elastic band by stitching, the tabs having buttonholes; buttons, and tapes towhich the buttons are attached, said tapes being attached to pin stays fastened by lines of stitching to the body of the garment, the elastic band being sufficiently short to tend to draw the garment together at the waist, substantially as shown and described. 7
