WATERPROOF OVERGARMENT.

Be it known that I, Hnnwro C. Tonrrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVilmette, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVaterproof Over garments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to waterproof pantalettes and has for its principal object to prevent the excessive heating of the body and the consequent perspiration commonly experienced as a result of wearing these garments as they have been heretofore made.

A specific object of invention is to produce a waterproof lower portion and an open work upper portion or girdle that will properly support the lower portion in position and at the same time permit the heat of the body to escape freely.

Other objects of invention will become ap parent as the description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a selected embodiment of the invention and in which- Fig. 1 is an elevation of the front side of the garment;

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevation illustrating the manner of securing the band within the hem;

In the drawings the reference numeral 10 indicates the waterproof body of the garment which is preferably made of rubber or rubberized cloth but may be of any suitable material. As shown the body is formed of a single piece of material cut to a pattern and fastened by the seams 11 and 12. The openings 13 are for the legs and are preferably surrounded by hems 141 within each of which is secured an elastic band 15 of proper size to hold the garment tightly about the logs. These bands are sufficiently extensible to permit them to be stretched to a diameter equal to that of the largest diameter of the holes 13. In making the garment the horns 14 are stitched so as to enclose the bands 15 and then the material about the opening 13 is stretched to remove any gather or pucker from the hem and a Serial No. 547,607.

line of stitching is sewed through the sides of the hem and the band. Fig. 8 illustrates the stretched condition. of the band when the seam 16 which holds it to the sides of the hem is being sewed.

In the preferred form of the invention the entire upper portion of the garment is formed by a girdle of marquisetto or other open work material of suthcient width to provide free escape of the bodily heat of the wearer. As illustrated this girdle is made of two pieces 18 and 19. The piece 19 extends entirely across the back of the body and around to points in a line with the seams 11 and 12 and the opposite ends of the piece 19 are sewed to the ends of the strip 18 forming a girdle. As illustrated in Fig. 2 the lower edge of the girdle is secured to the waterproof body by a lap seam 20. The upper edge of the girdle is provided with a hem 21 within which is located an elastic ban-cl 22. This band is secured to the hem in a manner similar to that described in reference to band 15 and the hem 1 1 so that the garment is uniformly gathered at the upper portion so as to fit the body of the wearer. In order to provide a support for the lower portion of the garment and to reinforce the seams between the pieces 18 and 19 I lay a piece of braid 23 along the seams on the outside of the garment and a similar piece of braid 24 along the seams on the inside of the garment before forming the hem 21. These pieces of braid are stitched on each side of the seams between the pieces 18 and 19 and are preferably stitched to the waterproof material forming the body of the garment so as to give a strong support to the front portion of the garment and in fact suspend it from the band 22 without loading of the material forming the girdle. The details of these re-enforcing pieces of braid are illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5 and will be clear without more minute description.

It will be obvious that the girdle can be made from one piece of marquisette or the like with one seam corresponding to the two seams just described or the girdle may be made of an endless piece of open work knitted or fabricated in any suitable manner. The gist of this feature of the inven tion being the provision of an open work section at the upper portion of the garment that will let the heat of the body of the wearer escape with freedom to prevent the discomfort usually incidental to wearing waterproof overgarments. It will also be obvious that very good results can be obtained without extending the open work girdle entirely or continuously around the garment.

From the foregoing it will be clear that an over garment constructed according to the principles of this invention will perform the usual functions of these garn'ients and at the same time will permit the necessary escape of heat to prevent the discomfortand consequent in anit'ary and unhealth'l ul conditions formerly experienced in the use of garments as they have been made in the past. As these garments are generally used under conditions requiring strict hygiene it will be obvious that my invention will give very good results aside from the comfort to the wearer.

I am aware that changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the invention, as set forth in the selected embodiment herein, without departing from the scope or SRCilfiCillp; any ()fltfi material advantages, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such cnanges as fairly fall within the scope of the following claims.

I claim:

1. A garment of the class described comprising a body portion of waterproof material having openings for the legs, a girdle of open work material secured to the upper iortion of the body and including two pie :es of material connected by seams running transversely to the ,e'irdle, a hem at the upper edge of the girdle, and straps of strong material covering said seams and forming loops about said hem,
