This invention relates to improvements in guards for the control cocks of gas stoves. One object is to provide a device of this class that is positive and eflicient in use, cheap to manufacture, easily installed, and that is durable in use.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in View the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application for patent and in which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan View of a gas range illustrating the application of the shield.

Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In homes throughout the country gas ranges are used for cooking purposes and where there are small children in the home it is very possible for them to open and close the gas range cocks without the knowldege of the adult members of the household. Small 0 children playing about the stoves are in this manner exposed to a possible danger which it is the purpose of the present invention to avoid by providing gas cock shields that prevent anyone from opening or closing the cocks without reaching over the top of the shield, which obviously cannot be done except by those persons large and old enough to realize the possibilities of their acts. The shields are made adjustable so that they will fit stoves of various sizes.
The shield is a trough-shaped member of sectional construction, the sections telescoping one into the other, the trough standing on edge so that its base is disposed outwardly and in a vertical plane. The shield is secured to the gas line and is disposed in advance of the gas cocks, one of the sides of the shield extending inwardly, or toward the gas cocks but below the same and the other extending inwardly but above the gas cocks.
The shield comprises the sections 1, 2 which are of elongated trough shape, the section 1 having its sides curved inwardly along their free edges to form the lips 3 to receive the straight sides of the section 2 so that the section 2 may be readily telescoped into the section 1, the base of the section 2 then riding upon the base of the section 1. The relatively outer ends of the sections are both bent at right angles to the body portions and in a common direction to form the heads 4, 5, the head 4t of the section 1 being larger, 'or of greater length, than the head 5 of the sec tion 2.
The base of the section 1 is formed with two spaced parallel slots 6 and the base of the section 2 with two similar slots 7, both pairs of slots being spaced inwardly from the heads of their respective sections. A straight bar 8 connects the slots of each pair and is adjustably secured to one shield section and to a metal strap 9 by the bolts and nuts 10, 11, said straps 9 passing about the gas line 12 into which the branch lines 13 of the stove 1 1 are tapped, each branch line being provided with a gas cock 15.
The inner end of the shield section 2 is formed with an elongated slot 16 that registers with a perforation in the section 1 to permit the application of the bolt and nut 17, 18 to lock said sections in an adjusted position.
The heads a and 5 shield the gas pipe at its termination 19 and at its elbow 20 that connects it to the section 21 that leads to the gas main. The adjustability of the sections 1, 2 permits them to be applied to gas pipes of different lengths and the pairs of slots 6, 7 with bolts and nuts 10, 11 permit the adjustment of the straps 9 with relation to the cocks 15 so that clearance for the latter may always be provided. The shield is reversible, end for end, sothat gas mains 12 having right or left hand take-offs or sections 21 may be fitted by the shield. One side of the shield extends longitudinally of the gas stove beneat-h the cocks 15 and one side above the same while the base is disposed vertically and in spaced relation to said cocks thereby effectually protecting them from interference from others than those able to reach above the shield.
What is claimed is In guards for the feed pipes of gas stoves, a gas cock shield reversible end for end and including telescopic sections, the sections being U-shaped in cross section, means for securing said sections together in adjusted positions, and means for securing said sections to the feed pipe, the relatively outer ends of said telescopic sections being bent at right angles to the body portions to form heads whereby to receive the end and elbow-joint of the feed pipe, the sides of said telescopic sections being disposed above and below the gas stove burners.
