Patented Oct. 11, 1932 UNITED STATES PATEN'T OFFICE LEWIS W. HELLER, OF OAK HARBOR, OHIO, ASSIGNOR T FULLER LEHIGH COMPANY,
OF FULLERTON, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE BOILER WITH WATER WALL TUBES Application filed October 31, 1928. Serial N0. 316,165.
This invention relates to a boiler that is located above its furnace. The furnace is provided with water wall tubes connected to the circulating system of the boiler in such a manner that not all of the water will be drained out of the boiler in case a furnace wall tube bursts. The invention will be described in connection with a boiler of the Stirling type.
The invention will be understood from the description in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section through an illustrativeembodiment of the invention, and Fig.2 is a vertical section taken at right angles to Fig. 1.
In the drawings reference character 1 indicates a furnace that may be fired for example by means of the burners 1. A boiler of the Stirling type is located above the furnace and comprises the usual upper steam and water drums 2 connected to the lower or mud drum 3 by banks of tubes 4, 5, and 6 with bafiies 7 to guide the hot products of combustion from the furnace 1 across the tubes and into the outlet 8 in the usual manner. A superheater 9, located between the banks 4 and 5, is connected to one of the steam and water drums 2 by means of the pipe 9.
In order to avoid the danger of all of the water being drained from the boiler in case a furnace wall tube bursts, the furnace wall tubes are connected to the water space of one of the steam and water drums 2 in the following manner :A group of tubes 10 at each end of one of the rows of tubes in one of the banks of tubes connecting the upper drums 2 to the lower drum 3 is connected to horizontal headers 11 located between the upper and lower drums. The groups of tubes 10 are indicated in the drawings as being in the front row of the bank of tubes 5, but it is to be understood that tubes in other rows may be connected similarly for this purpose. Tubes 12 connect the headers 11 on opposite sides of the furnace to the opposite ends of a header 13 located at the lower part of the rear furnace wall near the ash hopper 14. Tubes 15 on opposite sides of the furnace also connect the headers 11 to a lower header 16 at the lower edge of the front wall of the furnace; Tubes 17 on opposite sides of the furnace also connect the headers 11 to lower headers 18 located along opposite sides of the furnace.
A row of furnace wall tubes 20 connects the header 13 to an upper header 21. One or more recirculating tubes 22, located outside of the furnace, connect the upper header 21 to the lower header 13. Tubes 23 located outside of the furnace connect the header 21 to the steam space of one of the steam and water drums 2. r
A row of furnace wall tubes 24 connects the lower header 16 to the upper header 25 and a row of furnace wall tubes 26 connects the header 25 to the steam and water drum 2. Rows of side wall furnace tubes 27 connect the headers 18 to the upper headers 28 and recirculating tubes 29 outside of the furnace walls connect the headers 28 to the headers 18. Tubes 30 connect the headers 28 to the steam space of one of the steam and water drums 2.
The operation is as follows a The water level in the Stirling boiler is maintained in the usual manner and water for the furnace wall tubes is furnished by the water passing through the tubes 10 into the headers 11 from which it passes through the pipes 12, 15 and 17 to the lower furnace wall tube headers 18, 16 and 18. The water or mixture of steam and water passes upwardly through the furnace wall tubes 20, 24 and 27 into the upper headers 21', 25 and 28. Steam and water pass through the tubes 23 from the header 21 and the tubes 30 from the headers 28 into the steam and water drum 2. Steam and water pass from the header 25 through the water wall tubes 26 into one of the steam and water drums 2. The water circulates through the Stirling boiler in the usual manner. If a furnace wall tube bursts only enough water is drained out of the Stirling boiler to lower the water level to the level of the lower ends of the tubes 10, thus decreasing or eliminating the danger of the Stirling boiler steam generating tubes becoming burned.
