13 Claims.
This invention relates to a water tube boiler of the Stirling type in which the furnace walls are lined with tubes connected for normal operation at their upper and lower ends to one of the steam and water drums of the boiler. The furnace wall tubes are also connected to the mud drum so that water will be supplied to them even in case of low water in the boiler.
The invention will be understood from the description in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a vertical section through an illustrative embodiment of the invention; and Fig. 2 is a front view partly in section.
In the drawings reference character 1 indicates the furnace of a boiler, which may be fired by means of a chain grate stoker, for example. The boiler is illustrated as being of the Stirling type with upper steam and water drums 2, 3 and 4 and a lower or mud drum 5 to which the upper drums are connected by banks of tubes 6 with baflies 7 to direct the flow of gases across the banks of tubes. A superheater'is indicated at 8 between two of the banks of tubes 6, this superheater being connected to the steam space of the steam and water drum 4 by means of the pipe 9.
A header 10 is located behind the wall 11 at the rear of the stoker. A row of tubes 13 extends forwardly in an upwardly inclined direction from at) the header 10 to form a rear arch for the furnace, and these tubes then extend upwardly along the front of the front bank of tubes 6 into the steam and water drum 2. The tubes are lined along their lower portions with tile, as indicated 25 at 14, and these portions of the tubes are supported by means of supports 15. A wall 16 also supported by the supports 15 extends from the upper end of the tiled portion 14 to the drum 5. The rear of the furnace is thus sealed to prevent escape of gases to the rear below the drum 5. Downcomers 18 extend from opposite ends of the water space of the drum 2 along the outside of the furnace to a horizontal header 19 located along the front of the furnace on the outside.
A row of furnace arch tubes 20 extends inwardly through the furnace wall from the header 19,
thence upwardly and out through the furnace wall to the horizontal header 21. This row of tubes is lined with tile 22. A row of furnace front wall '60 tubes 24 extends from the header 21 to the drum 2 and the upper ends thereof are connected to this drum along a row of spaced holes extending longitudinally of the drum. 0
Pipes 23 connect the ends of the headers 21 and 65 19. Pipes 26 extend downwardly from the ends of the header 19 into the endsof corresponding fittings 2'7 located near the lower edges of the furnace'on the outside. Short horizontal connections 28 connect the fittings 27 to headers 29 lo-' cated at the lower edges of the side walls of the furnace. Pipes 26' connect the ends of the header 10 to the fittings 27. Rows of tubes 30 extend upwardly along the side walls of the furnace from the headers 29 and thence outwardly into the upper headers 31. Return tubes 31' for local circulation connect the headers 31 to the fittings 27. Tubes 32 extend from the headers 31 to the steam and water drum 2.
Oneor more tubes 33- of considerably smaller total cross sectional area than the tubes 18 lead from the drum 5 to each one of the headers 29, so that, if the water level becomes lower than the upper ends of the tubes 18, water will be supplied to the water wall tubes through the tubes 33 from the drum 5.
In the normal operation of the boiler the furnace wall tubes are supplied with water by means of the pipes 18 from the drum 2, and the tubes 13 are supplied with water through the pipes If the water level reaches a point below the upper ends of the tubes 18 a sufficient amount of water will continue to be supplied to the furnace wall tubes and to the tubes 13, through the tubes 33 that are connected to the drum 5, to prevent them from being burned out.
I claim:
1. In a water tube boiler, a furnace having water wall tubes and furnace arch tubes, said boiler having a steam and water drum, a connection from the water space of said drum to the lower ends of said tubes, and a connection from the circulation system of said boiler at apoint below said drum to said tubes.
2. In a water tube boiler of the Stirling type, a furnace having water wall tubes, an inlet connection from the water space of a steam and water drum of said boiler to said tubes, an inlet connection from the circulation system of said boiler at a point below said drum to said tubes, an outlet connection from said wall tubes to a drum of said boiler and a row of tubes extending below the mud drum of said boiler, one end of said row of tubes being connected to a steam and water drum of said boiler and the other end'of said row of tubes to the lower ends of said furnace wall tubes.
3. In a water tube boiler having a steam and water drum and a water chamber located below said steam and water drum, a furnace having water. wall tubes, 9. connection. from the water no space of said steam and water drum to the lower portion of said tubes, a connection from said water chamber to the lower portion of said tubes,
the upper ends of said water wall tubes being losaid drum at points spaced longitudinally along said drum.
5. A furnace, water cooling tubes along the side walls of said furnace, a cross drum, and connections from the upper ends of said side wall tubes to said drum, said connections comprising upwardly' extending tubes entering said drum at points spaced longitudinally along said drum, the lower ends of said last-named tubes being spaced from each other in directions transversely of said drum.

11. In a boiler, a furnace, an upper steam and water drum and a lower water drum connected by a bank of tubes, water wall cooling tubes, a header to which the upper ends of said cooling tubes are connected, and upwardly extending direct tube connections from said header to said upper drum at points spaced longitudinally along said drum, the upper ends of said tube connections being in a plane parallel to the axis of said upper drum and the lower ends of said tube connections being in a plane at an angle to the axis of the side walls "of said furnace, a header to which the upper ends of said tubes are connected, a cross drum, and upwardly extending tube connections from said header to said drum entering said drum at points spaced longitudinally along said drum, said water cooling tubes being more closely spaced than said tube connections and being located along a hotter portion of said furnace ISAAC HARTER.
