Description
Patented Feb. 5, 1929.
uNrrEe STATES HENRY '1'. su'ronn, or EL raso, Texas;
\ y rrLLow.
Application filed` `Jane 5,
This invention relates to an improved pillow designed particularly for use upon operating tables.
The primary object of the invention to provide a pillow for use in the administration of aneesthetics by means of which the antesthetic can be conveniently administered while the patient is resting upon one side.
The pillow embodying this invention is designed to provide a restfor the back of a patients head while the patient is lying upon one side so that the anaesthetic mask can be firmly pressed against the face of the patient without pushing the patient out of the desired position.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, with the` understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient fea; tures of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan View of the pillow;
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of the same;
Figure 3 isa vertical transverse section taken upon the line 3 3 of Figure 2 Figure t is a sectional view of one edge of the pillow taken upon the line 4 4 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral l indicates generally the pillow embodying the present invention which as shown comprises three sections 2, 3 and 1l. The overall length of the pillow is designed to equal the width ofan operating table and at one end of the pillow the section 2 is made relatively high, while the intermediate section or portion 3 which. when the pillow is in position will be arranged substantially upon the longitudinal center of the table, 1s materially y lower than the end portion 2. and the portion 1928. Serial No. 288,991.
ength neoessarytornake the illow equalin e length to the width `of the tab e.
When in use the pillow isarranged trans-.l`
versely of the table at the head thereof and is maintained in position by the straps 5 and 6, each of which is attached at `one end to one end of the pillow and passes under the table where the otherends thereof are connected together by any suitable meanssuch as the buckle 7. i i
`lVhile the pillow may be constructed of any suitable material, a heavy rubberized or waterproof canvas has been found particularly suitable for such Ause. l
The material for forming the top, bottom and front and back surfaces of the portions `.2 and 3 and the top and bottom surfaces of the portion 4 is preferably vformed of a continuous piece, the proper shape being given to the portions 2 and 3 by the form of the side panels 8. The end portion 4 consists only of a double thickness of one end of the said continuouspiece, the other end thereof having the edge arranged between the top and bottom sections of this doubled portion as indicated at 9 and held in position by the,
back of the head pressed against thevertical wall 11 of the higher portion 2. lVhen in this posit-ion the anzesthetic mask or cone can be firmly pressed against the face without danger of moving the patient from position and if necessary a bowl or basin can be conveniently arranged adjacent the head supporting portion 3 upon the portion l.
Having described my invention what I claim is I- l. A lateral posture pillow for use in administering anaesthetics, having;r `three portions, a relatively low or Hat end portion, an intermediate portion of greater height than and directly connected to `one side of the low portion, and an opposite end portion com nected to and of greater height than thev intermediate portion, said portions beingsubstentztlly lnt on top and having their tops arranged n stepped rela-tion.
2. A lateral posture pillo7 for use in administering enzesthetcs, comprising t substantally rectangular body having' two flat top surfaces arranged in different planes and connected by e substantially vertical Wall, a flat body secured along` one edge of the pillow body adjacent the lower one of Said surfaces and extending` down said edge and thence outwardly in substantially the. salue plane as the bottom of the pillow.7 :1nd mea-ns 'for securing the pillow in position upon :t table.
3. A lateral posture pillow for use in :1dmnistering anaesthetcs, comprising a stuffed body ol elongated rectangular contour ller# ing); two transverse top surfaces arranged n dll'erent planes and connected by :L substantially vertical Wall, an extension secured to and projecting from that end of the body adjacent the lower surfe-ce thereof and erranged n substantially the seme plane as the bottom of the pillow, and e securing strap attached at one end to said extension and ut another end to the remote end of the pillow body and designed to secure the body trams- Versely of an operating table.
In testimony whereof I hereunto etx my signature.
' HENRY T. SAFFORD.
