To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osnrn A. CALDWELL,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Arkadelp-hia, in the county of Clark and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide the head board and the foot board each with an adjustably mounted element which shall serve to ward off drafts in cold weather, but which may be shifted, when desired to permit of free circulation of air.

A further object is to provide a vertically slidable element, for the head board or foot board, or both of these elements, the slidable element serving the ourpose indicated.

iVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The headboard of a bedstead is designated 10, the foot board is shown at 11, and the side rails are designated 12 and 13. The

head board and foot board are each provided with a vertically slidable element, such as Serial No. 553,155.

14: and 15. These elements are of an ornamental character and may each include a series of panels, or these devices may be otherwise formed, provided the main purconnection with each element 14 and 15, and

are mounted near the corner portions there of, and are adapted to engage recessed portions of the posts, for retaining the slidable elements in the position desired. By the use of these devices, the necessity of providing an excessive amount of covering in extremely cold weather is avoided.

Having thus described the invention, I claim:

A bedstead including a head board and a foot board, the elements of which are provided with vertical grooves, and air deflect ing devices movable bodily in vertical planes in said grooves, said deflecting devices being slidable to a point permitting their upper edges to assume a position approximately flush with the upper surface of a mattress when placed on the bedstead.
