E. w. ALDRIDGE MATTRESS yFiled Nov. 20, 1922 INVENTOR WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 27, i923.
UNITED STATES ERNEST W. ALDRv-IDGE, 0F VINSON, OKLAHOMA.
MATTRESS.
Application led November 20, 1922. Serial No. 602,200.
To all 'LU/wm t may concern,
Be it known that I, ERNEsT W. ALDRIDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vinson, in the county of Harmon and State of Oklahoma. have invented new and useful Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
rIhe object of this invention is to provide an air mattress comprising two independent longitudinal sections, each having an air inlet controlled by the valve, so that one or both sections may be inflated, according to the need of the user.
A further object is to provide a mattress comprising two longitudinal sections of sheet rubber, covered with cloth1 with transverse strips and fastening devices for connecting the sections in such manner that both will lie in the same parallel plane when inflated, the strips or straps beingdisconnected when one section only is used, in order that the one used portion may be folded over the other, and allowed to remain idle.
1With the foregoing and other objects in view, the. invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view ofthe mattress; Figure 2 is a side or edge elevation, and Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section, broken away.
The two longitudinal sections of the mattress are designated 10 and 12, and each comprises four sides and two end walls. One side, which will be termed the bottom, eX- tends the full width of the mattress, and in fact, a single width of sheet rubber may include also the edge portions 12', the tops 13 and 14 for the two sections, and the inner edge portion 15. The edges of the sheet of rubber as distinguished from the edges of the mattress sections, are secured under a central longitudinal strip 16, just above the bottom thickness.
Middle reinforcing strips are designated 16 and ext-end entirely around each mattress section and binding strips 18 reinforce all of the corners. The opposite end walls of the sections are shown at 19 and 20. The mattresg so formed of sheet rubber is covered by a thickness of fabric 22, and short straps 23 are secured by fastening devices 241, so that the two sections may be directly connected when both are to be used. If only one section is required, the straps are released and the idle section is folded over the other.
Air inlet connections are shown at 25 and 26, in the end portions of the respective sections, and valves 27 close the connection. When deflated the mattress may be folded into very small compass, and is specially adapted for the use of campers, being readily inflated by any air pump, such as a tire pump, and not being affected by moisture. rIhe mattress will be maintained in a sanitary condition; and is also adapted for use in hotels and in sleeping cars.
IVhat I claim is 1. A mattress comprising itwo longitudinal sections, hingedly connected, valved air inlet connections for the respective sections, and means for connecting the sections ad jacent toone surface of the mattress, said sections being otherwise independent permitting the sections to be folded over one another when inflated and when deflated.
2. A mattress comprising two longitudinal sections, hingedly connected, valved air inlet connections, for the respective sections, means connecting the sections along a central longitudinal line adjacent to one surface of the mattress, and detachable devices for connecting said sections near the oppo site surface of said mattress.
3. A mattress formed of two longitudinal sections including a single width of material extending across the bottom of the two sections, thence along the outer edge portions and across the top of said sections, inwardly to the center, and thence along the inner edges of the separate sections, downwardly to the bottom thereof, and detachable means for connecting adjacent portions of said sections.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature.
ERNEST W. ALDRIDGE.
