Description
J'. E, BONIN.
TRY SQUARE, No.1?7,989. Patented May 30, 1876;
WITNESSES.- v 'EY NPETEHS PHDYO-LITHQGRAPNER, WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH E. BONIN, OF WILLIMANTIC, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRY-SQUARES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,989, dated May 30, 1876 application file-d April 20,1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. BONIN, of Willimantic, in the county of Windham and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Try-Squares; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in a combined square and bevel; and it consists in combining with the square a slotted blade, which can be turned and secured in any desired position, whereby a square and bevel are combined in the same instrument, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The accompanying drawing fully shows my invention. 7
or represents the blarl e of the square, and
c the handle, which handle is composed of two separate strips of wood, to the inner side of one of which the blade is rigidly secured. These strips are separated from each other, at their lower ends, by a thin plate of iron, which is so shaped as to form a screwdriver, d, on its outer edge. Besides forming a screw-driver, this plate serves to hold the two parts of the handlejust far enough. apart to allow the narrow slotted blade 6, which forms the bevel, to be inserted evenly between the other two ends. Passing through the slot in the blade 0, and out through the handle, is a screw-rod, g, upon which is placed the thumbscrew 1', which serves to clamp the two parts of the handle together in such a manner as to hold the blade 6 securely in any position in which it maybe placed. By means of the slot in the blade, the blade can be shortened and lengthened at will, according to the position in which it is placed.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim The combination of the fixed blade a, handle 0, formed of two parts, which are separated at their lower ends by a plate that forms a screw-driver, d, adjustable bevel e, and thumb screw, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of April, 187 0. I
JOSEPH E. BONIN.
