Description

l. A. TBAUT.
Carpenters Gages.
Pat en ted August 5, 1873.
AM. PHOTU-UTHOGRAPH/C c0. N. (asaams(s Pnaciss) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JUSTUS A. TRAUT, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANLEY RULE AND LEVEL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPENTERS GAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,475, dated August 5, 1873; application filed November 16, 1872.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JUsTUs A. TRAUT, of New Britain, county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Carpenters Gages; and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe, referring to the drawings in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of this invention consists in the mode of adjusting and firmly holding the tooth in the gage-bar.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of this improvement. Fig. 2 is a side view partly in section. Fig. 3 is a top View of the gage-bar broken off a short distance from the end.
a is the gage-bar; b is the gage-head; c is a gib d is a thumb-screwall thus far as now in common use. 0 is a slit cut in the center lengthwise, and nearthe end of the bar a, having one or more gage-pin orifices, e, to receive the gage-pin e to allow it to be placed, removed, or adjusted by the thumb and finger,
as may be desired, and to be firmly held in that position in the slit end of the bar by means of a screw, f, fitted into the side of said bar for compressing the slit portion together.
N ow, it will be seen that by loosening said screw the pin 0 can be removed, replaced, or adjusted, as desired, and again be firmly secured by turning up the screw f, which will compress the slitted portion of the bar together and thereby firmly clamp the pin in its proper place.
This, though simple, is of great advantage, and does away with the annoyance experienced from the use of common gages. I
What I claim, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture, the carpen ters gage herein described, composed of the bar a, head I), slit 6, gage pinor pins 6, and fastening-screw f, all arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
