Description

July 8, 1930. w. B MEYERS 1,770,319
" MAIN nmcn CHECK AND GATE Filed Sept. 15, 1929 2 SheerQs-Sheet 1 ATTORNEY July 8, 1930. 4 w. B. MEYERS 1 MAIN m'rcn cnscx AND GATE Filed Sept. 13, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 ATTOR NIY Patented July 8, 1930 UNITED STATES MAIN DITCH CHECKZA'ND Q-ATE A lication filed September 131; 1529; ,se-aia o..az;m'.
My present invention has reference to certain improvements in dams or checks capable of being secured in a ditch or drain at any desired point for forming a check or closure at said point to stop the flow of water beyond the said point, andwherein the dam or check is provided with means for permitting a re stricted flow which may be regulated.
The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description'when read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form part of the application, with the understanding, however, that the improvement is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawings nor to the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes 'and modifications -may be made 29 therefrom as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of'my improvement.
' Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view approximately on the line 4.4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5is a detail transverse sectional View approximately 0n the line 55 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a detail elevation looking toward the lower portion'of the gate opening in the tappoon plate. I
Figure 7 is a detail sectional view approximately on the line 77 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the water ate.
b Figure 9 is a plan view of the blank from which the tappoon plate of the trough or funnel is formed.
As disclosed by Figure 9 of the drawings it is my intentionto form the body of the improvement from a single blank of metal. The face or tappoon plate 1 iscurved from its top inwardly to its bottom so that the same can be arranged transversely of an irrigation ditch and forced into the soil so as to effectively dam the water. The face plate 1 has it s'l upper edge" reinforced by an angle .i pn'a whichis's'olderedtolthe saidpla tei As disclosed by Figure 9. of thedrawings: the metal from which the plate :1 is formed'is .elongate'dand extends a' considerable dis tance beyond the rounded edgesthereof.
This portion of the metal iscuifved, after the sameisslit centrally and the la ping edges of the said curved portions are soldered together. The cross sectional ly' rounded or curved portion provides afiiiinel or trough 3 and by referencet'oFigures land 2 of the drawings'it will be seenthat the sides of the funnel are concaved, this being incident to the" cutting of" the met'al' in" a line with the rounded edge of the plate 1. The plate 1, below the angle iron 2, is formed with a substantially rectangular opening 4, whose lower wall is arranged in a line with the lower wall of the funnel 3. The plate 1 has certain of the cut-away portion retained and the metal thus provided is bent outwardly and upwardly to provide channeled stops, 5 that are designed to receive therein and to have resting thereon the lower right angular portion 6 of a Watergate 7. The water gate has its edges formed with continuous flanges, and the side flanges 8 have their edges extending outwardly, as at 9, and are received through guides 10 that are fastened to the plate 1, adjacent to the upper and beaded end thereof. One of the flanges 9 is provided with spaced notches l0 and one of the guide plates 10 is provided with an opening through which is passed a pin 11 that is received in any one of the notches. By this simple arrangement it will be'noted that the gate can be raised and sustained at desired elevations so that the flow of water through the improvement may be restricted and regulated. Thetop flange of the gate 7 has its inner edge formed with an extension that affords the'same with a handle 12, and the an gle iron 2 is cut-away to receive the handle therethrough. The con struction and operation of the improvement will, it is thought, be understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art to which such invention relates so that further detailed description will not be required.
Having described the invention, I claim:
A head gate for an irrigation ditch or the like comprising a tappoon plate whose side and lower edges are rounded and which is designed to be arranged transversely of a ditch and to be inserted therein, an angle iron soldered to the upper end of the plate,
' said plate being centrally formed from its said upper edge with a rectangular opening,
a cross sectionally rounded funnel integrally formed with the plate and extending rearwardly therefrom and disposed in a line with the opening, channeled stop members integrally formed on the outer face of the plate below the lower wall of the trough, a gate having its sides and edges flanged, its lower flange formed with an angle extension to be received in the stops, the side flanges being formed with outward extensions, one of which is provided with a series of notches, guide flanges on the plate receiving the extensions therethrough, one of which being provided with an opening for the reception of a pin that is received through one of the notches in the gate, the angle iron on the V plate being centrally cut-away and the upper flange of the gate having a reduced extension received through the cut-away portion of the angle iron and providing a handle for the gate.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM B. MEYERS.
