The present invention has reference to slate jig screen designed for use in connection with coal jigs, the primary object of the invention being to provide novel means for separating 6 slate from the coal.
An important object of the invention is to provide a slate jig screen so constructed as to insure against the slate and coal passing thereover, clogging the slate openings, to
10 defeat the purpose of the invention.
A further object of the invention is to provide a jig screen of this character which will act to separate the slate from the coal, upon both movements of the jig screen, eliminat- 1 ing any possibility of the slate passing from the jig screen with the coal.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a jig screen constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the jig screen.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the device includes a body portion formedpreferably of a length of sheet metal, the same being indicated generally by the reference character 5, the longitudinal edges thereof belng extended upwardly defining lateral flanges 6 that act to confine the material passing over the jig, to the jig screen, preventing the material from moving laterally from the ig screen.
The body portion 5 is provided with a plurality of elongated cut out portions or openings, the openings being arranged at an an gle to a line longitudinally and centrally of the body portion, the openings being also arranged in rows transversely of the body portion.
As clearly shown by the drawings, the openings of one row extend at an angle reverse to the direction of the openings in the adjacent row, to the end that the material passing over thebodyportionmust move over the openings. 5 The openings are formed preferably by a stamping operation, the portions of the sheet metal adjacent to the openings, and formed during the stamping of the openings, are bent upwardly as at 7 in vertical lines and lateral- 69 1y at 8, so that tongues are provided, the tongues being so spaced from the body portion that the slate, owing to its comparatively thin or plate like structure, may find its way under the tongues and through the openings, the tongues acting as guides to guide the slate to the openings.
Elongated openings 9 are formed in the body portion and are disposed transversely of the body portion, between the rows of tongues 8. These openings are also formed by a stamping operation, the portions of the sheet metal formed by the stamping machine, being indicated at 10 defining tongues which are bent downwardly, as clearly shown by the drawing, to guide the slate into the openings upon the reverse movement of the jig. Thus it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, slate passing over the body portion will be caught under the tongues 8, upon one movement of the jig screen to separate the slate from the coal which rolls over the tongues.
The slate which might be carried over the tongues 8, upon one movement of the jig screen, will upon the reverse movement of the jig screen, pass through the openings 9 and be separated from the coal.
It might be further stated that owing to the construction of the tongues, the wedged shaped corners at the inner edges of the tongues, are eliminated, to the end that the slate cannot clog and prevent the operation of the device.
I claim:
A jig screen comprising a body portion formed of a length of sheet metal material, the longitudinal side edges of the body portion being extended upwardly providing lateral flanges, rows of tongues stamped from the sheet metal and extending upwardly from the body portion and laterally over the openings formed by the stamping operation, said tongues embodying vertical portions connecting the tongues of the body portion, the rows of tongues being spaced apart, said body portion having transversely disposed elongated openings defining downwardly extended tongues, and certain of the ends of the first mentioned tongues being disposed near the last mentioned tongues to direct material thereto.
