.BURIAL CRYPT I Filed Maru-h 20, 1929 IMIAZQ Attorney Patented June 24, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DONNA E. IIVIINTLOIN'v AND SENETH H. GAIiLAGI-IER,`F PARSONS, KANSAS BURIAL CRYPT vApplicationfiled March 20,1929. Serial No. 348,447.
to provide a crypt which will not only ex-k clude all moisture from the exterior, but will also absorb any moisture emanating from the body contained in the casket.
Another important object of the invention is Jto-provide a crypt in which the side walls and lid are thoroughly reinforced against rupture. e
Still another important object is to provide means for firmly securing the lid to the casket container portion of the crypt.
These and other objects of the invention will become more apparent to the reader, after considering the invention as described and claimed hereinafter.
In the drawings: Figure l represents a top plan view of the improved crypt with the lid removed.
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal vertical sectional view through the crypt. f
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional View through the crypt. Referring to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts, the invention includes a rectangular box llike container 3, preferably of metal or some equally strong, durable and air excluding material. The metallic container 3 has an external and internal coating of concrete form to protect the metal vfrom corrosion or other deteriorating reaction of metal.
The container 3 is open at its top side and has a bead 5 of substantially U-shaped cross section inverted for disposition at the upper edge portion of the container in the position shown in Figure 2. The cement covering of the container extends' over the bead 5 in the manner shown and that portion of the cement at the inner side of the container 3 and adjacent the top thereof is partially removed to provide a shoulderl 6 for supporting a tray, generally referred to by numeral 7. This tray is `of rectangular shape, with its side walls bevelled as designated by numeral 8, the bottom of the tray 7 being provided witha longitudinally ex-l tending split 9, from the edge portions of which an upstanding wall l0 extends.
Elevated rests 1l are provided upon the Hoor of the cement covered container 3, for spacedly supporting a casket therein.
The side walls of the cement covered container 3 has its cement covering formed with a groove l2 extending around its perimeter to receive some of the binding agents placed ICOl 'between the space between the upper edgeV .portion o f the container and the bevelled side walls of the tray 7. The binding agent is not shown in the drawings. The lid 13 is of yreinforced concreteV construction with G5 its edge portion diverged downwardly as at 14, for disposition upon the somewhat bevelled upper edges of the cement cover container 3. The longitudinally and transversely extending reinforcing elements 15 70 have their end portions bent downwardly for disposition between the space between the bevelled side walls of the tray 7 and the upper portion of the cement covered container 3. The hardening 4of the binding 75 agent placed within this case will firmly secure the lid 13 to the cement covered container 3. I
' A suitable quality of absorbent material is to be placed within the tray 7 to absorb V80 moisture developed in the manner afore-v mentioned within the crypt. n
It is apparent that through the use of the improved crypt, a body may be preserved for a greater period of time than in the conventional crypt through which moisture may penetrate from the exterior and inV which no means is generally provided for absorbing the moisture generatedwithin.
Obviously, in the production of this novel ,e
structure, certain changes in the specific shape, size and materials may be resorted f to, without departing from the spirit or scopevof the invention asclaimed hereinafter. 1 n' 595V Having described the invention, whatv is claimed as new is:
1. A. burial crypt comprising a moisture proof container adapted for receiving a casket, a tray for receiving an absorbent ma`100 terial supported within the upper portion of the container, said tray being provided with an opening in the bottom thereof and a lid for said container, the side walls of said tray being bevelled to provide L channel between the container and said tiny wherein e suitable binding agent may be placed.
2. A burial crypt comprising a moisture proof container adapted for receiving e cesket, a tray for receiving en absorbent ninterial supported within the upper portion of the container, and a lid for said container, the side wells of said tray being bevelled to provide a channel between the container and said tray wherein a suitable 'binding agent may be placed, and n, reinforcing element in the said lid, said elements being bent downwardly at their ends for disposition within said channel.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
DONNA E. MNTON. Y SENETH H. GALLAGHER.
