12 Claims. (Cl. 229-55) This invention relates to a paper-board drum or container, and more particularly to a tubular paper-board drum fabricated from a blank having its opposite s de edges lapped and sealed into a joint extending lengthwise of said drum and also provided with a series of tabs at one end to be inturned radially over a disc end closure to provide a closed bottom end.
Inasmuch as the drum is especially used for semiliquids or solids which are poured into the drums in a molten condition, and subsequently hardened, there is presented the problem of effecting a tight joint at the lapped side joint at the base of the notch between the terminal tabs. Heretofore, one of the terminal tabs has been of fractional size to lap with the opposite terminal tab of full size for extending the lap joint of the sides into the terminal tabs between adjacent notches or with terminal tabs of equal size lapped with the side edges of the lapped tabs in registration. Or the entire outer edge of each terminal tab is inclined inwardly from its outer free end to intersect the score line. In these constructions, however, the lapped terminal tabs are in registration to preserve the symmetry of the tabs and the intervening notches. The present state of the art is represented by Van Saun 2,243,231 and Hines 2,350,232 over which the present invention is an improvement. Their constructions have a double layer of the terminal tabs extending to their free ends. It is the aim of this invention to obtain an efiective joint with minimum lap and the symmetry of the tabs and notch preserved. ,Accordingly, one of the main objects of this invention is a tubular drum having one terminal tab provided with an elongated base portion on its outer edge to provide an integral portion at the base of the terminal notch.
Another object of the invention is a tubular drum having the lap portion of the terminal tabs in registry with the terminal notch rather than with the terminal tabs.
Another object of the invention is a tubular drum having a terminal notch of slightly less depth than the other notches.
Another object of the invention is a tubular drum having a lap at the base of the terminal tabs terminating remote from their free ends.
Another object of the invention is a tubular drum having terminal end tabs with a minimum lapped area.
A still further object of the invention is a tubular drum in which the underlap portion of one terminal tab is relatively shorter in length than the overlapping tab for permitting said underlap portion being levered by the longer overlying tab.
..A still further object of the invention is a tubular ,drum which is of a construction to permit increase or decrease of the side overlap without requiring any change in the tab end to preserve the symmetry of the tabs.
Further objects, and objects relating to details of con- :struction and economies of operation, will readily appear from the detailed description to follow. In one instance,
ate-tit ice the objects of this invention have been accomplished by the devices and means set forth in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the appended claims, and a construction constituting one preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a paper-board blank which is adapted to be folded to form a tubular drum embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the drum prior to formation of the end enclosure.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the finished drum.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged interior view of an end portion of the drum with the lapped terminal tabs.
Referring specifically to the drawing in which like numerals designate like parts, numeral 2 (Fig. 1) is a paper-board blank provided with a lining 3 on one side of any suitable material to render the board impervious to liquids. One edge of the blank which is to form one end of the drum is provided with a series of tabs 4,-of any configuration, set off by alternating notches 5. These notches 5 are preferably V-shaped, giving the tabs 4 the conformation of a truncated triangle with inclined sides 6. The tabs 4 are set off from the main body of the blank by a score line 7 parallel to the tabed edge but spaced from the base of the tabs so as to be also substantially spaced from the bottom of the notches 5 by the portion This portion 8 is a part of the main portion of the blank between the score line 7 and the tabs 4 but is folded with the tabs along the score line to form a surrounding margin for the closed end. The channel portion of the score is on the interior of the drum and the rib side on the exterior thereof to provide for seating the peripherial edge of an end closure disc hereinafter described.
The tabs 4- are of similar conformation with full-terminal tabs 9 and it provided. The side edge 11 of terminal tab 9 merges with side edge 12 of the blank, and the other terminal tab 16 has a base with an integral extension 13 having an inwardly inclined outer edge 14 merging with the outer side edge 15 of tab 10 at an obtuse angle and extending to the side edge 16 of the blank and at the score line 7. The side edge 16 of the blank terminates at the score line 7, and does not cross it. This inclined edge 14 may or may not be extended across the score line as desired but does extend into it.
The opposite side edges 12 and 16 of the blank are overlapped into a lap joint, sealed by adhesive, and secured by other fastening, such as metal staples 18, to form the tubular structure shown in Fig. 2. The side edges 12 and 16 are brought together with the free ends of the terminal tabs 9 and 10 spaced apart to form a notch 20 about equal to the width of each of the other notches to be symmetrical therewith. This sets off the free ends of terminal tabs 9 and 10 in symmetrical design with the free ends of the other tabs, and with the extension 13 lapped with a portion of terminal tab 9. The symmetrical design of the tabs is maintained and the symmetrical de-v sign of the notches is only slightly impaired. However, the lap could be such as to be formed entirely in the portion 8 by making the extension 13 smaller. The size of the terminal notch could thereby be made identical in size with the other notches and with extension 13 lapped only with the portion 8 below the terminal tab 9. i
More important, however, the terminal tab 9, overlying the extension 13 provides a leverage over said underlying extension 13 so that the lapped portion formed by the extension and overlying terminal tab and/or portion 8' can be bent over without buckling, such as results when the lap extends to the free outer end of the terminal tabs.
Moreover, the buckling is at the base of the lapped tabs at which point the adhesive is broken and not at their free ends. With the adhesive seal only partially broken, 7
one lapped tab cannot move relatively to the other, and hence the buckling is aggravated with the result that an opening results to permit leakage. This objection is overcome the present deviceby having a minimum lapped area in which buckling will not result, and any breakage of the adhesive in the lapped terminal tabs will result in freeing the lapped portions so that relative movement of the lapped tabs is permitted for'causing the lapped surfaces being held together into close contact.
The tubular member as above described can be made and stacked until used. To permit them to be stacked flat in a collapsed condition, the blank is advantageously scored lengthwise with score lines 21 and 22. When ready for use, the tubular members are expanded and closed at one end.
A circular disc 23 of papersboard is fitted into the end of the tubular member. with its peripheral edge seated in the channel of the scoring 7, and the tabs 4 are bent inwardly, together with the portion 8, and secured to the disc by any suitable means, such as adhesive, staples or taping. As clearly illustrated in the drawings, only a minimum lapped area is provided between the extension 13 of the terminal tab 10 and the adjacent terminal tab 9, and this extension 13 is overlapped by the said terminal tab 9 which levers it to form a tight joint without buckling.
After the tubular member is filled, its opposite end may be left open or closed in a conventional manner. This tubular member above described is particularly adapted for asphalt which is poured into the member in a 'molten condition and allowed to solidify. The asphalt filled member is handled and shipped with its top end left open.
The tubular construction permits increase of the lapped side edges 12 and 16 without altering the construction of the tab end. All that would be necessary is to have the lapped end 12 of greater length. It could be of a length to register with the notch next adjacent to the terminal notch rather than terminating between these two notches as shown in the drawings. However, the extent of the overlap is ordinarily preferably about as shown.
From the foregoing description of the illustrated embodiment, it will be seen that effective sealing of the lapped joints is provided with minimum overlap of the terminal tabs, and such overlapping is only in a small area of the terminal tabs and confined to the bases thereof without extending to their free ends. Such construction also provides for a wide degree of varying the extent of the lap without changing the construction of the tubular member.
It will be understood that there may be various changes in details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention, and, therefore, the invention is claimed broadly as indicated by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and'useful and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent,is:
