This invention relates to a burial vault of the concrete metal lined type incwhich the marginal edges of the lid section are seated and supported uponan inner marginal ledge of the box lining leaving more 'or less clearance space between the marginal edges of the lid and outer walls of the ledge so that the lid may be easily placed in operative position upon the box ready for sealing when desire The main object is to provide a more convenient and efficient means for hermetically sealing the joint between'the lid and box by first sealing the space between the mar ginal edges of the lid and outer Walls of the ledge and then covering the sealed space and sealing means with additional cement of concrete cementitiously secured to theupper face of the box and to the adjacent edges of the lid thereby continuing the concrete casing of the box and lid across the joint between the box and lid and around the entire metal lining of both the box and the lid to render the burial casket air tight and water tight.
Other objects and uses will be brought out in the following description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of a burial vault embodying the features of my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the vault taken on line aa-zv, F igure 1.
As illustrated, this burial vault comprises a main body or box section 1 and a lid section 2 covering the open top of the box section.
The box section comprises an inner sheet metal box lining 3 and an outer casing 24 of concrete or analogous cementitious material preferably of considerably greater thickness than the metal lining -3 and reinforced throughout its area by open-mesh woven wire reinforcement 5 embedded in the concrete between the inner and outer surfaces thereof for increasing the tensile strength of concrete.
The sheet metal lining 3 of the box preferably comprises a bottom plate 6, side plates 7 and end plates 8 secured together at the corners by overlapping interlocking tinners joints 9 which are preferably soldered together to form an air and water tight connection, it being understood that the lining 3 is co-extensive with the interior of the box 1 and waterthroughout their areas so as to form a substantially smooth exterior, said concrete casing beingof nearly uniform thickness and its upper end is made to conform as closely as possible to the contour of the marginal ledge 10 and flange 11- and is, therefore, provided with a similar marginal ledge -10 and flange -11, it being understood that the thickness of the concrete casing 4 is considerably greater than that of the lining 3 for strength and dura bility and for protecting said lining against contact with external objects and also against direct contact with external air and moisture.
The top faces of the sides and ends of the casing 4 and lining 3 are disposed in substantially the same horizontal plane for a purpose presently described.
The lid 2' is of greater area than the space within the marginal ledges 10 and -10 but of slightly less area than the space within the marginal flanges -11 and -11 to enable the lid to be easily placed in operative position upon the ledge thereby leaving a slight space between the marginal edges of the lid andjfianges 11.
As illustrated, this lid is arched upwardly transversely from its opposite side edges toward the center and also'has its opposite ends inclined outwardlyand downwardly as shown in Figure 1 to give strength to the lid and also to enable it to shed water, said lid comprising an inner sheet metal lining -12- and an outer casing section 13 of concrete similar to the casing section -4 for supporting and reof the box 1 except that its marginal edges terminate within the marginal flange -11.
The marginal edges of the sheet metal lining 12- are provided with rip-turned flanges 14 which assist in retaining the concrete section 13 in operative position against relative lateral or endwise movement and also forms a bearing adapted to rest upon the ledge 10-.
This concrete section 13- is also reinforced by a woven wire fabric 5' imbedded therein for reinforcing purposes.
When the marginal edges of the lid -2 are seated upon the ledges 10- of the box section -1- the rip-turned flanges 14t terminate at about the same level as the top of the flanges l1- but in slightly spaced relation thereto as previously explained to enable the lid to be easily placed in operative position after which the intervening spaces or joints are filled with solder or equivalent material -15" to firmly bind the flanges -11- and 14 to each other and also to render such joint air tight and water tight and at the same time assisting in holding the lid in operative position upon the ledge -10-.
The concrete section 13- is preferably molded upon the outer faces of the inner lining -12- so that its marginal edges will lie in vertical planes substantially co-incident with the outer faces of adjacent portions of the flanges 14.- thus forming with the upper faces of the sides and end of the box -1- a marginal recess -16- of rectangular cross section as shown in FigureQ.
After the filling seal 15- is properly inserted in the joint between the lid and box the upper faces of the sides and ends of the concrete casing 4-4 and also the outer marginal edges of the concrete section -13 of the lid are roughened by acid treatment or otherwise whereupon an additional filler 17 of concrete or cement is firmly tamped into the recess -l6 to entirely fill the same throughout the marginal length and width of the box, the outer surface of the filler -17-- being finished smoothly from the upper outer edge of the lid section 13 to the upper outer edge of the concrete casing 4t so that the filler 17- will be substantially triangular in cross section and firmly knitted to the adjacent faces of the box and lid to become a substantially unitary part of the casing -land section -13-.
It will be noted that the filler -17- extends entirely across the space between the flanges 1l and -14- and also across the filler -15- thereby additionally sealing the joint and firmly holding the filler -11 in operative position to hermetically seal the lid upon the box.
Under this method of sealing the lid upon 1 the box it will be noted that the joint between the lid and box is clearly exposed and enables the filling seal -15- to be conveniently and firmly incorporated in the joint at all points in the joint and that after this sealing operation is completed the recess -16- is also exposed and enables the operator to conveniently and positively fill in the concrete section 17- to complete the seal and at the same time to bind the lid upon the box.
What I claim is:
A burial vault comprising a concrete boxsection having its top portion provided with an outwardly projecting marginal flange and an inner marginal groove in the horizontal plane of the flange, the bottom and outer wall of the groovebeing disposed respectively in horizontal and vertical planes, a sheet metal lining covering the inner surfaces of the bottom, sides and ends of the concrete box section and having its upper marginal edge offset outwardly and upwardly to rest upon and against the bottom and outer upright walls of the groove, a concrete lid-section having its marginal edges overhanging the bottom of the groove within the outer upright wall thereof, a sheet metal lining covering the inner surface of the concrete lid and having its marginal edgeextended outwardly above the outwardly oilset portion of the upper 111211 ginal edge of the box-lining within and in spaced relation to the upwardly offset portion of the upper marginal edge of said box-lining, a water proof filler in said space, and a concrete filler between the outer r marginal edge of the concrete lid section and upper surface of the marginal flange of the concrete box-section.
