This invention relates to a character designated or initialed article; and has for Yits object to provide a construction by which two sheetmetal parts may be removably attached together vby suitably shaping the parts and without the necessity of providing any additional support or separate member for such attachment.

A further object of the invention is to form an insignia plate or element which will cooperatel withl formations in a face plate to releasably and positively secure the insignia plate to the face plate in a manner which can readily be removed and replaced by a similarly formed insignia plate when desired. v

With these and other objects in view, the

invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed outin the appended claims.

I have also found it desirable to recess a portion .of the face plate to receive the insignia so that it may lie flush with the face plate of the buckle and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention and illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished.

While .I have illustrated this invention as applied to ia belt buckle, it will be readily apparent that many` sheet metal objects are equally adapted to receive and have mounted thereon insignia, and I therefore desire that it be understood that although I Arefer particularly to a buckle, other Objects of a similar construction are withm the scope of this y invention.'

It will be understood that the resiliency of the knob 22 tendsto force the' finger 20 firmly against the edge wall 24eof the material surrounding the slot 18 and prevents the removal of the insignia element except by first forcing the knob 22 outwardly from the back surface of the plate whereby it may be swung in a hinging fashion to a position to Withdraw the linger 20 from its slot 18 and completely remove the insignia -element 16 from position after which an insignia element having a diffrent inscription-thereon such as a different letter may be substituted so that a retail merchant-need carry only'a few buckles accompanied by a plurality -of different insignia or letters to supply his trade with buckles having different letters or emblematical symbols thereon.

The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms ofthe appended claims.

I claim:

1. In a device of the character described, a

element having insignia thereon, integral fingers extending from said element, one offset from the" plane of said element of a size vto extend through one of said slots and engage the surrounding stock and the other finger folded into a coil to forni a resilient knob to resiliently engage the stock surrounding the other slot and retain the element in position. y

2. In a belt buckle, a face plate having a depression there'n with spaced slots in the depressed portion and a separate element having insignia thereon of a size to fit said depression, an offset finger on said element to extend through one of said slots and en gage an edgey and overlie-the. ba'ck of the stocksurrounding saidslot, anda second finger on said element rolled to provide a resilient knob of a size and shape to extend through the other of said slots and resilientl and frictionally engage the edge ofthe stock thereabout whereby said element .is removably secured in said depression.

8. In a belt v.buckle a face plate havinga surface with a depression therein with spaced slots in the depressed portion along the junction of the depressed portion with the surface of the plate,'and a separate element having insignia thereon of a size and shape to fit said depression` and substantially
