Be it known that l, HAROLD lll. Daarna, a citizen of the United States of America, of last Orange, in the county of Essex, in the State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Badges and Analogous Devices, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

rlhis invention relates to badges and analogous devices having means for attachment to a coat, vest or other object and involving the use of a frame provided with a sight opening for the reception of identification cards, emblems and other insignia which it is desired to display.

The main object is to utilize the attaching means for retaining the article to be displayed in operative position in the frame and at the same time to mount the attaching means in such manner that it may be moved to and from its operative position to allow the article to be displayed to be removed and replaced by others bearing similar or different characters.

ln other words, l have sought to provide a simple, practical and efficient divice of this character which may be used and reused for displaying different marks of identification, emblems or other insignia without in any way modifying the structure of said device.

Other objects and uses relating to speciiic parts of the device will be brought out in the following description:

A similar ycircular disk -4- of paper, light cardboard or similar material, is ap plied to the convex tace of the metal plate 1- and is provided with a central dia-r metrically elongated rectangular opening ,-5* registering with the opening -3, the marginal edges of said disk being crimped over and upon the marginal flange -2- to hold the disk in place.

The outer face of the disk -4- is covered by a transparent circular plate -6- of celluloid or equivalent flexible material, which is continuous across the openings -3- and and has its marginal edges crimped over and upon those of the disk -aand metal plate -l-, thereby forming a transparent protective shield and cover for the display card ato render the matter thereon readily visible from the front and also protecting the saine from injury by the elements or by handling.

A circular back-plate of stiff cardboard or equivalent material -7- is secured against the rear concave face of the metal plate -lwithin the marginal flange 2- and is also provided with a central diametrically extending `rectangular opening 8- registering with the Openings 3- and -5 for receiving a rectangular panel --9-- which is preferably of the same material and is adapted to fit closely within the opening -8-- and against the card -afor retaining the latter in operative position and permitting it to be removed or replaced when desired.

The back-plate -7- is held in operative position by bendable tongues o r clasps 10 which are formed integral with the plate -lat intervals around the inarginal edges of the opening -3- so that they may be bent rearwardly and outward ly and clinched against the rear face of the baclsplate as shown more clearly in Figures 2 and 5 rl`he removable panel -9- is therefore rectangular and of 'substantially the same size as the opening -8- in the back-plate -7-- and is provided with a handle 1lkhinged at l2- to a supporting member 13- adhesively secured to the panel.

Suitable means is provided for holding the panel -9- in its operative position and also for attaching the badge as a whole to a garment or other` support, said means consisting in this instance of a single piece of wire bent into substantially V-shaped form to provide opposite similar arms --land an interniediate loop -l5h, the ends of the arms being bent toward each other to form pintles 16- which are journalod in suitable eyes 17'- on the plate lalong the lower edge ot' the opening 3 to enable the attaching member to swing to and trom a position across the back of the panel -9-.

The arms J4- are of sutlicient length to extend some distance beyond the side or the opening -3- opposite the hinges -l7-- and when adjusted for use are adapted to spring into engagement with a pair orp detents -l8 which are also formed integral with the plate -land eXteiid through registerinjg;` openings in the backplate Hr'-, as shown in Figure 4. The intermediate portions of the arms are bent or returned at 19 so that the loop -l5- is returned across the rear or' the back-plate -7 some distance therefrom, to enter a pocket, button-hole opening orother object upon which it is desired to mount the badge.

When the cardv or other article is inserted in the opening -3- for display, the panel -9- is replaced in the opening -8- to hold the card in place, whereupon the attaching member as *lllmay be locked in its operative position in engagement with the detents -18- to hold the panel in place and also to afford means, as the loop -l5-, by which the badge may be supported'upon the object where the card is to be displayed.

What l claim is:

ln a badge of the character described, a main supporting plate having a sight opening therethrough, a display plate removably seated in saiLL opening, a transparent cover plate secured to 'the main plate and extending across the front face ot the display plate for limiting the forward movement thereof in said opening and for dis playing said display plate therethrough, and means 'for holding the display plate in said opening including' a locking member havone end hinged to the main plate at one side oit the opening to swing to and from a position across and against the back of the display plate and its other end returned toward the hinged end to form a loopk Jrior attachment to a button hole or pocket, and a keeper on the main plate at the side of the opening opposite the hinge for engagement by the adjacent portion ot' the locking meinbei'.
