The present invention relates "to sample books for the display of fabric specimens by salesmen to prospective customers and Fh-a s for its principal object to constructa book of a continuouslyfo'rmed sample or backing machine adapted to be folded finto a compact form and providin'gmeans at each side of" the machine for attaching cards on which the samples of the fabric are mounted so{ that d ed together 'withthese sheets into "the form of a "book. V
A further obj ect of-the invention iis'toprovide the folding ma'chine with a series of apertures for re'm'ovably receiving the ends 01:" the sample card and} providing a series, of
supplemental card attaching "means atopposite sides ofthe folding-"machine andsecujred to the alternate sections thereofand with the edges :of said supplemental sheets arranged 'to form .a divider between the endsi-of the sample cards mounted at the Opposite side of theifolding means wherebyto prevent j interference with each other during the mounting and removalofthecards fromsaid apertures. a p g y e A still further'objectiisjto provide asample' book ofthjis character .in which the material entering into the Construction thereof is usually a minimum and which utilizes both sides of the folding means "forthedisplay of the samples, whichie neatand attractive in appearance relatively inexpensive to manufacture andotherwise well adapted for thepurposes for which thesam'e is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the special construction, .combinationand are ran-gementiof'the various elements forming the invention as more'fully hereinafter -de scribed and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.- forming a part hereof," wherein like numerals referjqto like parts throughout, and inwhi'chr Figure l'is a plan view 0f the foldable means'showing themannerinwhich'thesalnple-c'ards are attached i-n'posiition thereon,

ingthemanner in which 'tlie folding sections ofthe 'sheet are--arranged in association with the co'ver, l
Figure is a transverse-sectional viewta'lgen through one of Fthe foldin'g 'se'ctions of the '55 sheet substantially on -a line of Figure -1,and
Figure 5 is a fra of"'them'ain folding sheet and the'supplemental sheet *shown in position for "attaching 6 thereto. 7 V
Referringto th-e drawingindetail, wherein' for-"the "purpose of illustration I have disclos'ed apre'ferred, embodiment of'my inven- 4 signates the 'mainsheet preferably, constructed of substantially hea vy -paper or light cardboard of continuous formationand creased or folded at spaced intervals throughout its length as shown by the dotted line's yvller vide-a series of foldable sections 7. "To one of' thesesecti'onsfq issecured asuppl'emental sheet, said supplemental sheet having its gmen-tary-perspective view opposite sideedges turned inwardly toward t 9"and"disposed in 1 each ot-her as 'sliown a spaced 'parallel' relatio'n other,i-theouter face of end sections having a with respect to each said inwardly folded gummed coating 10 ending longitudina'lly throughout thegleng'th thereof whereby to provide a suitable attaching means for said sheet. e p
Th;e'sejction's -7 of the main sheet "are prople'mentalsheets and secured 'i'nrtheinanner indicated alternately atopposite sides of the main sheet 5. As clearly illustrated in Figure 15 o' ft'he' drawing the gu 'mmed 'portions 10- of "the supplemental sheet are arranged adjacent the foldslthereof so that the edges-of the inurau dly folded ends 99 9are free.
These free ends, it will be observed, fare interposedbetweenfthe' sections "of the j ma'in sheet 5 "and the -s,upplen 1ental sheet 8. V The is attached to l the outer edgefof the terminal section 7 is suitablyfattached to one end 70f a folding cover section 11, 'as forinstanc'e by g'luing or the liliesaidcover eetieflnibeingfolded intermediate its ends for-" foldingthe 100 ge of'that supplemental sheet which two portions thereof upon each other with the section 7 of the main sheet 5 folded therebetween as illustrated in Figure 3 of the' drawings, the two portions of the cover 11 thus providing an adequate protecting cover for the entire set of sections 7 and supplemental sections 8 when in folded position. The folded sheet and supplemental sheets are provided with a double row of spaced apart vertically extending slotted openings 12', said openings being formed sufliciently close to the side edges of their respective sections or sheets to enable the edge 9 of the sheet 8 to form the divider betweci'i the openings of the sections 7 and the openings of the supplemental sheets 8.. Adjacent each opening of one of the rows of slotted openings 12 is arranged an oval-shaped opening 16, said oval-shaped opening being disposed between the slotted openings and the adjacent edge of the section or supplemental sheet, each of the sections 7 and said supplemental sheets being similarly provided with such openings.
A series of sample cards 14 areprovided Tl? their opposite ends with tabs 15 and 16 respectively and adapted for insertion in the associated slotted opening 12 of the rows of openings so that the body of the sample cards will be supported upon the outer side of the folding sections 7 and supplemental sheets 8 in a horizontal disposed spaced parallel relation as shown in the drawing.
The tab 15 of the sample cards is of sufficient length so that when inserted in one of the slotted openings 12 adjacent the oval shaped opening '16 the tab will be disposed to register with said last named openings. The openings 13 are of sufficient area to permit the finger to be inserted therethrough for engagement with the tab 15 and thus enable the same to be forced outwardly through the adjacent slotted opening 12 in order that the sample card may be lifted and entirely removed when desired.
Upon each of the sample cards 14 is mounted a fabric specimen 17, or other material or article desired to be displayed in the sample book. By reason of the divider formed by the inturned end 9 of the supplemental sheet the tabs 15 and 16 of the sample cards carried by the folding section 7 and the superimposed supplemental section will be separated from each other so as not to cause interference or displacement of the tabat one 'ide of the sheet 5 upon the removal of such tabs at the opposite side thereof.
By providing a series of supplemental sheets, of the character specified and arranged in the manner indicated-upon the main sheet 5, both sides of the main sheet may be adapted for mounting a series of sample cards thereon and displayed in an attractive manner without interference by the tabs of the cards disposed at the opposite sides of the sheet. 7
It is obvious that our invention is susceptible to various changes and modifications in construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims, and we accordingly claim all such forms of the device to which we are entitled.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is:
1. A sample book comprising a continuously formed foldable sheet, a series of supplemental sheets, attached at the opposite sides of said first named sheet in staggered relation and sample card supporting means formed on each of said sheets and arranged to secure the cards in position thereon with the ends of the cards inserted through the sheets, a portion of said supplemental sheets constituting a separator for the inserted ends of the cards carried at opposite sides of the sheets whereby to prevent contact of the inserted ends of the cards with elements rearwardly of the supplemental sheets.
2. A sample book comprising a continuously formed foldable sheet, a series of supplemental sheets attached at the opposite sides of said first named sheets in staggered relation, sample card supporting means formed on each of said sheets and arranged to secure the cards in position thereof with the ends of the cards inserted through the sheet, said supplemental sheets constituting a separator for the inserted ends of the cards carried at opposite sides of the sheets whereby to prevent oontact of the inserted ends of the card with elements rearwardly of the supplemental sheets and a cover sheet for said foldable and supplemental sheets adapted to enclose the same in folded position.
8. A sample book comprising a continuously formed foldable sheet, a series of supplemental sheets attached alternately at the opposite sides of the folded sections of said first named sheets, each of said sections having a series of apertures formed therein providing sample card supporting means with the ends of said cards inserted through said apertures and disposed inwardly of the sheets and inwardly extending flaps carried by said supplemental sheets adapted to prevent contact of the inwardly disposed portions of the cards carried by the respective sheets with the openings of the sheets rearwardly thereof. 7
4. A sample book comprising a continuous- 1y formed foldable sheet, a series of supplemental sheets disposed alternately at the opposite sides of the folded sections of said first named sheets, each of said supplemental sheets having their side edges turned inwardly and interposed between the supplemental sheets and the foldable sheets, means for attaching the folded edges of said supplemental sheet to the folded sections of said first named sheet and with the inturned portions of the supplemental sheet freely disposed a plurality of rows of vertically extending spaced parallel slotted openings formed in each of said sheets and arranged at the opposite sides'of the three portions of said supplemental sheets, and a plurality of sample cards having tabs formed at the ends thereof and adapted forinsertion in said slotted openings of the respective rows, the 16 cards of each supplemental sheet and the cards of the associated sections of the folded sheet being arranged back to back with the free portion of the supplemental sheet constituting a separator for'the tabs of said cards whereby to prevent insertion of the tab in more than one opening.
In testimony whereof We afl'ix our signatures.
