Application filedwlarch 11, 1929, serial no; -34e,11s.
My invention relates to anew and useful a novel combinedpaper weight and cashl 3 box in addi'tion topossessing the advantages above mentioned further servesas an-adver-.
combined weight and cash box particularly adapted for use in connection withunat-r tended'n ews stands, to prevent the scattering V -5 of the newspapers by the. actionofthe wind and'to'insure against loss, whether by mis placement or pilferage, of, the money paid by the public purchasing the news papers.
My invention further relates to a device= 10 of this character,{ which addition to I weightingthenewspapers and safeguarding the money" paid therefor, is also ornamental in appearance, and thefconstruction of which lends it self to advertising if so desired." As is wellknowmit iscustomary, especially in the case of stores not 'specializing in news material, but carrylng a; side line of news I I papers and magazinesand the like, to place such newspapers andmagazines on a'stand p positionedoutside of the'stor'eandaltogether,
unattended,-it beingleft' to the customers to'pay the price of the news paper and help themselveswithout any aid or attention. To
weight the papers downand prevent their -2 being scattered'by'the wind,.i'a stone, brick,
horseshoe or tlie like was used, and in some cases, an old'empty cigar box or other recepftaclewas also placed on thenews papers or 1 [on the stand for the reception of the purchase @310 money, while inother cases the money was loosely deposited on the top of the stack of newspapers being sold; When noreceptacle was employed;- the" pennies and other, small coins' left bythe purchasers tendedito 1 roll ofi the stand when another paper was being I pulledv outof the stack;;while if a receptacle f: were employed, the collected coins 'consti-' tuteda severe temptation toyoungsters vand others, SO thatloss due to misplacement or t, 9 to pilferage was unavoidable, a
To overcome thesedisadvantages; I have devised anovel combined "paper weight and f ,cash-fbofx which servesuforweighting down thefstaclr of newspapers to preventftheir beu ing- -scatteredby the wind, and which aflords 1 fa safe-depositorreceptacle for the coins left by the public in payment for the newspapers,
thusrguarding. against loss through theft or through thecoins rolling ofi the s'tandand- 50. being c v v tisingwdevice if so desired, by inscribing thereon thename of thenews dealer, the name ofthe'newspapers'being sold, or thenameof some other product whichit maybe desired to advertise, thus substituting for the-unsightly brick, stone, or other weightheretofore em- 'ployed an ornamentaliand useful device.

,of a container of. anysuitableform or size, and painted in any sultable color, aweight I bottom to said container, s'lits in the top of said container for receiving coins in pay-,5 ment for the newspapers being purchased, means for preventing'the unauthorized withr drawal of said coins from said containenand meansfor firmly but detachably securing said My invention 'furtherconsis'ts offvarious other novel featuresof, construction and advantage all -as hereinafter-described and claimed. y f -F0r the'purpose of illustrating my inven tion I have shown in the accompanying draw ings one form thereof which is at 'prese'nt pre ferred (by me, since the'samehas been found" in'practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it isto be'understoodjth'atthe i arious instrumentalities*of which. my
invention consistsjcan be variously arranged and organizedl-and-thatmy invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and orcontainerto'thenews stand or; other fixed 7 support. i
ganization'oif the instrumentalities as herein shown and'des'cribed. I
1 In the accompanying drawings:
9 1', represents a'pers'pective View of my I novel combined weight and cashbox, the same; being sh'own 111%(3'011311156 on a news stand;
- Fig; 2', represents top nnfviewtf m' vnovel combined 'weight and; cash box shown a Fig. 8, repreSentsa sectiOn on line 3+3 of certain parts being shown inv elevanewspapers 2, placed on an outdoor, unat tended stand 3. My combined weight and cash box 1 comprises the container 4, composed of the upright wall 5 whichmay be cylindrical or otherwise, the top orlid-6, per-- manently secured to or formed integral with the upright wall 5, and preferably overhang ing the latter as at 7 In the mp6 of the container 4 are the slits 7, through which the coin or coins deposited in payment for a newspaper or the like may be dropped. To prevent the withdrawal of the coins fromfthe container 4, I provide the pendant teats 8, best seen in Fig. 3. The container 4 is closed at its bottom by the plate 9 having the ups turned flange 10. which is adapted snugly to engage the bottom end of the upright wall 5 which is of slightly smaller overall dimen: sions. To the bottom wall or plate 9 is permanently secured the weight 12, such as a block ofiron or lead, said weight being adapted to fill the lower-portion of the container 4 and to extend to approximately the mid he ght thereof, the top surface of said weight serving to receive the coins dropped into said container, as will be understood from Fig. 3. 18 designates a horizontally disposed U-sl-ia-ped bracket having the through aperture 14 therein, and secured to the bottom plate 9 by the pendant integral limb 15, as will be understood from Fig. 3. 15 designates a lip or tongue, permanently secured to the upright wall 5 of the container 4, and having the aperture 17 therein, said lip 16 beingv adapted to seat between the limbs of the U-shaped bracket 13, with the aperture 17 thereof aligning or registering with the aperture 14 in said bracket. The shackle 19 of a padlock'18 is then passed through the aligning apertures 16 and 14 and through the end link 20 of a chain 21, the other 22 of said chainbeing permanently anchored at the point 23. The padlock 18 thus secures the container 4 to the bottom closure 9 and secures the entire device to the news stand or other fixed support to safeguard against'unauthorized removal. In order to facilitate the aligning of the aperture 17 in the 1113,16
with the through aperture 14 in the limbs of the-U-shaped bracket 13, Iv provide the notch 24 in the bottomedge of the upright wall 5 of the container 4, which is adapted to' act as a stop for limiting the rotation of the bottom closure 9 with respect to the upright wall 5 of the container 4 at the point at which the aperture 17 is in registering alignment with the aperture 14 in the U-shaped bracket 13.
The outer surface 25 of the container 4 is very well adapted for the inscription of an advertisement such as the name of the papers being sold, the name. of a special product, or the'name of the dealer, or any other desired information, thus increasing the utility and value of my novel device.
When it is desired to remove the coins from the container 4, the padlock 18 is unlocked, and the bottom closure 9 is revolved until the lip 16 is withdrawn from engagement with the U-shaped bracket 13, whereuponthe container4is turnedupside down to prevent the dropping out ofthe coins collected therein and the bottom closure '12 is withdrawn upwardly from the container 4. After the coins in the container 4 have been removed,
the device is again assembled in the manner described and is ready for further use.
. It will thus be seen that in addition'to providing a weight for preventing the scattering of the papers by the wind, and in addition to anchoring said weight to prevent loss or misplacement thereof, I have further devised means for safeguarding against the loss of the money paid by the purchasingpublic, whether through accidental loss or through theft. It will further be seen that my novel weight and cash boxalso constitutes a very valuable and effective advertising medium since it is in constant sightrof all passersby and since the attention of every person buying a newspaper is particularly and inevitabodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative, and not restrictive, reference beinghad to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing descriptionto indicate the scope of the invention.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure -.J
