SAVINGS DEVICE l Filed June 17, 1953 2 sheets-sheet 2 @vel/fof Hernzan/ @Blinder Patented June 9, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAVINGS DEVICE Herman Albert Binder, San Francisco, Calif.
Application June 17, 1933, Serial No. 676,258
3 Claims. (Cl. 23,2-4)
My invention relates generally to coin saving devices, and more particularly to display devices equipped with coin receiving means.
It has been common practice by such institutions as banks and other institutions interested in the encouragement of thrift and savings, to employ various schemes, devices and the like to further this end. For example, such associations have distributed among their customers various types of coin receiving banks for the purpose of encouraging consistent savings. vice designed to receive the coin is arranged so as to render the same conveniently and quickly accessible each time a deposit is to be made, a consistent savings program fails to be encouraged thereby. It is with the thought in mind of providing a coin receiving device or savings bank, which is constructed and arranged to foster and sustain the savings idea on the part of the user that I have made the present invention. In fact, it is one of the primary objects of my present invention to provide a simple, unique, and attractive savings device of the easel type, which is always conveniently accessible and which, because of its very nature or form, is frequently observed by the user. Y
In accordance with the foregoing object, I propose to provide a -device including a panel and a support member connected therewith for retaining the panel in proper display position in combination with a coin receiving'receptacle or bank adapted to be supported by said elements in a convenient and accessible position for receiving coins.
More speciiically, my invention contemplates a device as above set forth, in which the coin receiving receptacle is so positioned when the panel occupies a display position, that a restricted opening provided at the upper portion of the receptacle is conveniently located for receiving coins and currency. Y
Another object of my invention is to provide in an easel device of the type mentioned above, a coin receptacle or bank which is supported thereby and which is positioned at the rear side of the panel, thereby rendering the receptacle proper inconspicuous to the eye of an observer, and at the same time accessible for receiving coins.
A' further object of my invention is to provide an easel device of thei type mentioned wherein means is provided in association with the coin receptacle or chamber to permit the convenient Withdrawal of accumulated coins from one end thereof. Y
Still more specically, my invention contem- Unless the deplates an easel device, in which the support member hingedly connected with the panel or frame is formed with a chamber having an opening for receiving coins at the upper portion of the hinged member.
The foregoing and numerous other objects and advantages will be more apparent from the following detailed description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rear side of an easel device embodying features of my invention;
Figure 2 is a front elevational View of the device shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the hinged support member, said View being taken substantially along the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the rear side of a modified savings device, which is also an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse sectional view of the lower portion of one of the hinged support members of Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional View of the lower portion of a support member equipped with a modied coin releasing device;
Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 6, disclosing a modified key controlled closing device for the coin receptacle;
Figure 8 is still another modified construction whereby the removal of the accumulated coins may be conveniently accomplished;
Figure 9 is a front elevational view of a modied savings device provided in the supporting base of a pivoted or swinging stand frame; i
Figure 10 is a perspective view of the rear side of the lower portion of the device shown in Figure 9;
Figure l1 is a vertical transverse sectional View of the supporting base taken substantially along the line II-Il of Figure 10; and
Figure 12 is a transverse sectional View taken substantially along the line I 2l2 of Figure 11.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail wherein like numerals have been employed to designate similar parts throughout the various figures, it will be seen that my invention contemplates the provision of a savings device, as shown in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, which includes a panel member or section designated generally by the numeral Ill, and a support member therefor designated generally by the numeral l2. drawings I have shown the panel l0 as including In the aframe section I4 and a panel section or back I6, to which the supportmember I2 is securedby means of a suitable flap or hinge I8. VjI make reference to the part to which the support member Y,
`I2 is connected asa panel, and in using the term panel, I include either a Ysingle plaque lor a plaque and frame construction of the type shown Y in the' drawings. Y Y
VThe support memberV orV section nI 2 serves the double .function of supporting the panel I and also a coin receiving device orreceptaole 20, which permits of the convenient removal of -accumufV actually forms a part of the support member.` V.The upper portion of the receptacle Ill is provided with a restricted coin receiving aperture or slot 22, while the lower end Vof the receptacle is provided with a removable closure member 24, which is adapted to be'withdrawn by'exerting a pull on a ring 26. The withdrawal of a closure member 24 lated coins. y To limit the outward swingingof the Y support member, I provide the usual iiexible strip 28,Figure 1. c 1
In Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, I'haveV shown the .fpanel'as not only includingV the back I6 and the frame I4, but also a front glass section 30. Beneath'the Vglass I propose to display any desired object. For purposesV of illustration I have indicated a document 32, which I have designated as a life insuranceA policy. To one side of the policy I provide suiiicient space for a letter to be'writV Vten. f This life insurance Vpolicy' and the space ad- Vjacent thereto have'been shownmerelyto illus- Y trate one practical'application of my. invention.
Itwill be apparent that by'having the policy in plain View of the ownerfand in proximity itothe bankli or receptacle 20, it will serve as a reminder ofthe savings programV which must be consistently practiced in order to be4 in aposition to pay for the premiums which come due' from time to time. 'Obviously other attractive displays may be vcarriedy by the'panel, which' will serve thesame pur- 'pose'as the policy. For example, the picture of a child or othermember'of the Vfamily could be substitutedjfor the aboveV mentioned policy. While the life insurance policy, picture or other display :member does not form a part of the invention -perse,it jdoes'serve to indicate the practical sig- `-niiicance of having my improved easel vdevice providea pair of coinreceivingopenings 23 at the equipped with the savings bank feature.
, Referring toFigure f1, it will be seen that I Y V back-and towardthe upper portionof the panel section I6. VThese openings communicate with.
Ycompanion chambers housed within the back I6,
the lower ends of which terminate opposite the closure Vmembers or flaps V25. By opening the iiaps 25, accumulated coins received through openings V23 may be removed. Thus I provide in the, frame :structure a pair of coin Yreceiving receptacles, whereinV individual deposits may lbe Y. made. Obviously other forms Vof closure members may bek made without'departing spirit and Yscope of my invention. v Y
' In'Figures 6 to 8, inclusive, I have disclosed modified means for closing'the lower end of the. Vreceptacle 20. Y element designated generally by the numeral 24a Thus inrFigure V`6 a simple slidek is shownwhich may be withdrawn in thesame manner asrtheY member 24 shown in Figurerl.
In Figure '7 a member 24h isdisclosed which mayV be `removed when a key `controlled lock 34' is manipulated so as `to release the member 36 from the member 38. In Figure 8 a still further modi- Y ed closure member 24o is shown. This member i maybe withdrawn from the bottom of the reable hinge members or flaps.
from Y the ceptacle by merely depressing buttons 40 so as to release locking detents 42 from each Yend of the walls of the closure member 24o. It will, therefore, be apparent that' the4 invention is not limited. to any particular type of closure member, V5
the support member I2a is provided with a rea l5V stricted opening or slot 22a for receiving coins.
The lower extremity of each of the supportmembers I2a is provided with a closure member 24d,V which, like the closure member 24h of Figure 7,
Vis equipped with a key controlledlock 34d. By20rv f turninglthe lock 34d, a member'36d is released from a locking element 38d soras'to permit the Y convenient withdrawal of the closure member 24d.
'Ihe support members I 2 and I2a have surfaces Y designed to receive tables and the like, which'in- 25 dicate the manner in which'sma'll savings, if con-'- sistently made, will eventually 'amount to a considerable sum. In other words, invention contemplates the provision of support members, Y Va surface of which is designed to receive and con- 30' veniently display instructions orindicia; Itwill be apparent that when the savings device isposi.-
vtioned so as vto properlylocatethe panel ,Ill for display purposes, any printing or writing thereon will be hidden fromY the observer standing in front 35 of the device. Thus, myinvention contemplates the provisionof'a'saving's device which is attrae--V tive, simplein'construction, and extremely practicalinuse. c.
. In Figures 9 to 12', inclusive,I haveldiscloseda 4Q Vmodiedsavings device in combination with the structure of a pivoted or swinging ystancl frame. 'Ihe frame orfpanel is indicated generally by the Vnumeral I0e` and is pivotally supported at vopposite sides'by -thefupwardly extending members f1.5.' Vof a support device which is indicated generally by the numeral 20e. `'I'his device 20e. performsr the same function `as the members or devicesf20 and 20a previously described inasmuch as it prov-V videsV theV support for the panel Ille. A base 48 50 provides a pair of elongated'chambers 50, Figures g 11 and 12, which are separated'by a central partition 5IV andadapted'to receivecoins inserted through slits or Vopenings 52 companion thereto provided in the rear wall of the base 48.V Having 55 the openings 52 thus positioned, 'they are ren-` Y dered very inconspicuous to Vone observing'V the `subject matter contained on the front side ofthe panel I0e. Slidably mounted withinthe bottom portion of the base 48 is a pair of closurev members 54 which, whencompletely inserted Within the base as shown in Figure 11 cover companion openings '56 provided Within the bottom of the base; Theclosure members 54 may be pulled oixtwardly by merely gripping the flexible members 65 58 secured tothe outerV ends thereof. Obviously the `inventionis not limited tothe particular typeV of closure member shown in the drawings,V but contemplates various forms of devices which will facilitate the removal of accumulated coins from 70 the chambers 50;
In Figure 10 I have shownin dotted lines the position'occupiedby the closure members when they have been Vpulled outwardly i I' so as to uncover the opening 56. It will be ap? n. parent that in the structures shown in Figures 9 5 to l2, inclusive, the supoprting device 20e, which includes the base 48 and the upright members 46, serves the dual purpose of housing a savings bank and supporting a panel frame member Ie.
From the foregoing it will be observed that my invention contemplates the provision of coin and currency saving device of practical and simple construction, which serves to materially encourage thrift. The savings receptacle always occupies an inconspicuous, yet convenient position for receiving monies. The savings receptacle being operatively associated with a frame or panel support permits attractive data, as well as photographs and the like, to be placed in juxta-position with respect thereto, so that the observer is constantly aware of the presence of the savings receptacle.
Obviously modifications and changes in structural design may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A savings device comprising a panel, a hinge on the back of said panel, a substantially rigid coin box having a flat top with a coin slot therein and a flat bottom having a coin removing aperture therein, said box being pivoted at its top to said panel by said hinge, an openable closure for said aperture, and a strap connecting said box and said panel at a point away from said hinge and allowing said box to be pivoted away from said panel on said hinge to define a selected angle with said panel.
2. A savings device comprising a panel, a hinge on the back of said panel, a coin box having a iiat top with a coin slot therein and a flat bottom and being pivoted at its top to said panel by said hinge, and a strap between said box and said panel at a point removed from said hinge and 5 limiting the movementof said box away from said panel, the lower back edge of said box extending to a point approximately even with the bottom of said panel and the front of said box being shorter than the back thereof and having its edge above the lower edge of said panel when the box is parallel with said panel, whereby the bottom of said box lies at on a supporting surface when said box is pivoted away from said panel to the full extent allowed by said strap. 3. A savings device comprising a frame, a panel within said frame, said frame and panel being adapted for receiving and displaying pictorial or reading matter, a hinge at the back of said panel, a support connected at its top to said panel by said hinge, said support comprising aV rigid box having a at top with a slot therein near the side thereof away from said hinge and adapted to receive coins, a nat bottom having an aperture adapted to allow removal of coins, and an open-V able closure for said aperture, said bottom being slanted upward toward said panel, and a strap connecting said box and said panel at a point away from said hinge and allowing said box to be pivoted on said hinge to describe a selected angle with said panel, the bottom of said box being adapted to lie flat upon a supporting surfaceA when said box is rotated away from said panel to the limit of said strap.
