LGHTING FXTURE.
The presentinvention relates to lghtingxtures and more particularly to means for securing a globe or shade in such i rature. Thus, the present invention provides means for securing and holding a globe or the like, which means are normally outside ot the holder so as to permit the easy insertion oiFA such glohe, and which are movable into globe holding po sition by the insertion olf the globe itself. Means are also provided 'for locking the globe holding means inthe holding position and at the same time forming a dirt-proof enclosure and concealing the holding means. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter ullydescribed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing` and the following description set forth in detail certain mecha-- nism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting,'howeyen but one of various mechanical iorinsin which the principle ot' the invention may he used.

The present lixture compris-s a holder 1 oi' usual bell-shapedfform having a top portion in which a socket, not shown, is usually mounted, and this holder is provided near the bottom with outwardly extending or horizontal :mange 2 and a depending flange or skirt 3 with rolled lower odge 4i, the inrolled edge 5 of therhead being spaced slightly from the skirt 3 to 'form an annular groove G.
At the angle hetween the skirt and flange are a series of slots i' anda second seri-es of slots S are formed in the skirtbelow the slots 7, forming in eliect double slots which are separated by a cross bar 9 which is inset from the plane of the skirt. Three such double slots arey illustrated, theseA ybeing equally spaced about the skirt, but the number and size of the slots will depend largely upon the Y rihis leg 11 extends stra-ight for a distance equal to the length of the flange 2 and is then bent upwardly for its end portion 12. The depending leg 13 of the clip has a short portion 1li at right angl-cs to the leg 11 and this vportion lits against the outer surface of the cross bar and is of the same thickness as the skirt so to beV flush therewith, as best shown in Fig. 7. The lower part 15 of the leg 18 forms the globe engaging means and is bent outwardly 'and into a loop so as to provide a resilient globe engaging portion. Y
These clips are so formed that the `leg` 11 over-balances the leg 13, so as to normally maintain the clip in the position shown in Fig. 6 with the loop 15 substantially Hush with the skirt, that is with none of the leg 13 lying within the interior oi the skirt. This locking ring is readily movable up and down to secure and release the globe and forms a joint which is substantially dirt proof. As shown, it is provided with a rolled bead 26 near the upper edge of the flange 2&1, such bead constituting convenient means for manipulating` ring and being incidentally ornamental in effect, as well. The loopedv ends ot' the clips are sutliciently resil- Vient to allow for small differences in the size of the lip found in globes and shades as ccmmercially manufactured, and of course the angle between the legs of such clips may be readily changed to suit different globe sizes.
The entire device is Isimple to construct and' to assemble and no holding means show on the outside, the locking ring complet-ely covering the clips and vslots and fitting snugly with its lower edge in the bead so as to give the appearance of a unitary structure.
Other modes of applying the principle of our inventioiiinay be employed instead of the one explained, .change being made as regards'tlie mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any ot the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.` Y Y lVe therefore particularly point out and ldistinctly claim as our invention l. In a lighting fixture, the combination Vof a holder having a cylindrical portion and a flange adapted to receive a. globe, plurality of globe holding elements pivotally connected to said holder, and means for excluding foreign ina ter and for concealing said elements, said means comprising an annular locking member having an inwardly extending flange axially slidable on the cylindrical portion of said holder and a depending flange to engage and cover entirely over said locking elements for retaining the same in their respective locking positions, said loclring elements for retaining the same in their respective locking positions.
2. ln a lighting fixture, the combination ol a holder provided near the bottom with a horizontal flange and a globe-receiving flange depending therefrom, said flanges provided aeent the angle therebetween with a series of double slots, a series of locking clips coinprising y angled straps mounted to extend through the upper slots and balanced so as to have their lower ends normally hanging substantially flush with said depending flange but being movable inwardly, by contact with the upper edge of the globe, into globe-holding position, and a locking ring adapted to fit over said depending flange to secure said clips in their globe-holding position.
