SHADE HOLDER.
Application filed May 14,
connected to a lamp socket or other recep tacle, and is also adapted to suspend a lamp shade without the use of the usual radial screws. I
Another object is to produce a fixture of this character which presents a neat and more or less ornamental appearance.
The invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of an electrical receptacle adapted to be connected to a wall or ceiling, the parts constituting the shade holder being shown in cross section.
Figure 2 shows the four individual parts of the shade holder separated and partly in section.
Figure 3 is a side view, partly in section, of a modified form of my invention.
Referring to the drawings 10 indicates a amp base or receptacle of ordinary construc tion and consisting of porcelain or other in sulating material. The particular base illustrated is adapted to be attached to a ceiling of a room, but it will be understood that the present invention is adapted to be used in connection with numerous other forms of receptacles or lamp sockets. As illustrated in the drawing, the receptacle 10 is formed with a neck 11 at the lower end of which is a rib or shoulder 12 surrounding the screw shell 13 of the lamp socket.
A split ring A is adapted to be sprung over the shoulder 12 onto the neck of the receptacle. This ring is provided with a shoulder 141, and a threaded'portion 15 below the shoulder. The ring is of brass, or other elastic material, and is split as at 16. When in position the shoulder 14 of the ring rests on the shoulder 12 of the receptacle.

against the lower end of the neck of the receptacle, thus securing the parts together without any play or lost motion. lVhen thus assembled a shade may be held in the Imemher B by three or more screws 19, as shown in Figure 3. I pi'el'er,'liowever, to suspend the shade in the manner to be presently described and to dispense with the screws which are unsightly and more or less unre- The screws are also liable to crack the shade due to expansion when the lamp liable.
is'in use.
Before screwing the part B onto the part A I preferably insert in the part B a threaded ring C provided with a flange 20 adapted to be clamped between the flange 18 and the lower end of the neck of the re ceptacle When the parts A and B are screwed together tightly.
On the outside of the threaded ring C is screwed a similar, but slightly larger, threaded ring D having a flange 21 at its lower end extending outward sufiiciently to support a shade, such as shown at 22 in dotted lines, without the aid of the screws 19. As stated, the screws 19 are preferably omitted, but the skirt 23 of the member B is retained and is adapted to hide the several threaded members and produce an ornamental finish between the lamp base and the shade It will be notedthat this improved shade lamp receptacle which is provided with an annular shoulder orgequivalent supporting means at its lower or outer end. The parts are all of comparatively light material and inexpensive but, nevertheless, suspend the shade in a substantial maunerand without danger of breakage. The skirt or canopy 23 preferably extends downto the normal position ofthe shade to give the fixture a proper finish when the parts are assembled. The ring D may be provided with small depend ing lugs 24; to facilitateturning it into place, the lugs being punched out of the metalof the flange 21.
Having described the invention I What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: p
1. The combination with a lamp receptacle having an external annular shoulder,f a screw ring having an internal annular shoulder, a second screw threaded member adapted to draw said shoulders together, said second member having an inturned annular fiange adapted tov engage the end of the receptacle, and means associated with said second member for supporting a shade.
2. The combination'with a receptacle having a neck and an annular shoulder, of a. threaded split ring provided with an internal shoulder adapted to engage the shoulder on the receptacle, a second threaded ring cooperating with the first named ring and hav ing an internal flange, and a shade support ing ring having a flange adapted to be clamped against the outer end 01 the receptacle by said second member.
3. The combination with a. receptacle having an annular rib surrounding itslamp receiving portion, two cooperating threaded members each provlded w th a flange or shoulder to engage the inner and outer surfaces of the rib, and a shade supporting member having a flange adapted to" be clamped agamst the outer surface of the rib.
4. The combination with a lamp receptacle. having an annular rib surrounding its lamp receiving portion, of a split ring having a threaded portion surrounding said rib and a shoulder to engage the rib, a member having a threaded portion to engage the split ring and a flange adapted to engage the outer part of the rib, a threaded ring having a flange adapted to be clamped between the flange of said member and the rib, and a second threaded ring adapted to be screwed onto said first threaded ring and having a shade supporting projection at its lower margin. V
5. The combination with a lamp receptacle having an annular rib surrounding its lamp receivin portion, of a split ring having a threaded portion surrounding said rib and a shoulder to engage the rib, a member having a threaded portion to engage the split ring and a flange adapted to engage the outer part of the rib, a threaded ring having a flange adapted to be clamped between the flange of said member and the rib, and
a second threaded ring adapted to be screwed I onto said first threaded ring and having a shade supporting projection at its lower margin, said member engaging said split ring having a skirt or canopy surrounding and obscuring the several threaded members.
In testimony whereof hereunto atiix signature.
MAR-K N. RUSSELL.
