The various sections are clamped or held in a socket and a hole provided with a handle which is preferably removable.

Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse sectional views of oval and round brushes respectively embodying my invention.

In the form shown the bristles are arranged in two groups 7 and 8 'which are held in a socket 9 and provided with a handle 10. A wedge 11 serves to lock the sections or groups of bristles in the Socket. For adjusting purposes the wedge is provided with a threaded stem 12 which passes through an opening 13 in the bottom of the socket 9 and screws into a threaded recess 14 in the handle.

The bristles are preferably set in rubber or other flexible or setting compound as shown at 15 and 16.

These reinforced ends are also preferably bound with metal strips 17 and 18 which serve as bearing surfaces against the inner walls of the socket-9 and the outer walls of the wedge 11.

These bands 17 and 18 may be placed in the mold when the bristles are set in the hardening composition or they may be applied afterward and securely fastened in place to the imbedded or set ends of the bristles.

To assemble the brush the various sections are inserted in the socket 9 together with the wedge 11, the stem 12 of which is inserted through the opening 13.

The handle is then screwed up against the bottom of the socket 9 so as to draw the wedge 11 down into place and compress 1m, Serial No. 123589.

bands 17 and 18 so as to hold the bristles securely. As the bands of the socket 9 are preferably formed of sheet metal or thin cast metal such as brass or aluminum, the yield considerably when the handle is screwed up and thus securely hold the parts together as the wedge is drawn into place. When it is desired to clean the brush or remove the bristles the handle is unscrewed and the wedge can be readily driven out by striking against the outer end of the stem 12. The removal of the wedge 11 relaxes the base of the bristles so that they can be readily removed from the socket 9.

In the form shown in Fig. 4 the bristle sections 20, 21 are held in the socket or ferrule 22 by a wedge 23.

In the form shown in Fig. 5 the bristle sections 25 and 26 are held in the ferrule or socket 27 by the wedge 28.

In all of these forms it will be noted the the bristle base is divided into two parts b y a plane extending generally in the diagotal direction. This is to facilitate manufacture and assembly and removal of the parts. It should be understood, however, that I do not wish to be limited to this diagonal division or to the particular numb: of sections into which the bristles are divided, except as the terms of the claims may require.

I claim:

1. A brush comprising a socket, elongated in cross section, a body of bristles set in a hard anchorage divided diagonally into two parts and a wedge between the two parts securing said parts in the socket.

2. A brush comprising a socket, a bristle base divided into a number of parts and removably mounted in said socket, a wedge member mounted between said parts and having a screw threaded shank extending rearwardly from said socketand a removable handle having a screw threaded recess for said screw shank for drawing the wedge member in place and clamping the bristle base in the socket.

3. A brush comprising a socket having a central opening in its rear wall, a bristle base formed of a plurality of parts, each of said parts having a wall forming a recess tapering inwardly, said socket having a contracted outer edge overstanding the edge of the bristle base, a wedge member in said recess, a handle member, and a screw extending through the opening in the rear wall of the socket and connecting the handle and wedge members whereby the elements may be drawn together by rotation of the handle member relatively to the socket.

4. A brush comprising a sockethaving a central passage, a bristle base formed of a hard composition divided diagonally into two gal-ts each part having a metallic surroun ing band, said base aving a central recess tapering inwardly, a wedge member in said recess having a screw threaded shank extending outwardly through said central passage and a handle having a screw threaded recess for said shank whereby the wedie, bristle base, socket and handle may all e readily drawn to 'ether.
