BRUSH Filed Aug. 28,y 1939 Patented Aug. 26, 1941 UNHTED STATES PATENT QFFECE BRUSH John Martin Spyckaboer, Midland Park, N. J.
Application August 28, 1939, Serial No. 292,353
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in brushes, and its general object is to provide a hand brush which is particularly adapted for cleaning oors and the like, the tip of the brush being curved for cleaning in corners, etc., and in which the tip portion of the brush may be easily and readily removed and replaced when it becomes worn.
Another object of my invention is to provide a brush of this character which is economical to manufacture and which is strong and durable.
With these and other objects in view as will hereafter more fully appear and which will be more specifically pointed out in the appendedA claim, reference is now made to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which- Fig, 1 is a side elevational view, partly in section, oI my improved brush;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View, taken o-n the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional View, taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a detail view, showing the clamp.
Referring now to the drawing in which similar reference characters represent similar parts, the numeral I0 represents the brush head, preferably made of wood, but which may be made of other suitable material, terminating at one end in handle I2. The handle I2 may be provided with a circular opening I4, tol permit the brush to be suspended from a nail or the like. The other end of brush head I0 is clamped to removable tip I6, also made of wood or other suitable material, by means of clamp I8, which clamp comprises an elongated flat strip of metal, to which is aflixed a threaded bolt 20 adapted to extend from the top down vertically through cylindrical opening 22 in the brush head I. Clamp I8 is also provided with a stud 24 adapted to fit into opening 26 of the brush tip. An auxiliary clamping member 28, provided with a circular opening 30 adapted to fit around the threaded bolt 20 is affixed to the bottom of the brush tip by means Y of stud 32 which nts in opening 34 in the bottom of the brush tip. Nut 36 is then threaded on the bolt 20, securely and rigidly holding the tip of the brush in place. An additional fastening means for holding the two sections of the brush together in a secure manner is provided by wire s clips or staples 38, adapted to be driven into the sides of the two brush portions, as shown in Fig. 4. Bristles 40 are -secured to the underneath side of the brush and tip in any well known or conventional manner.
It has been found in brushes of this kind that the most wear falls on the bristles on the tip of the brush, and heretofore when the tip of the brush became Worn, it was necessary to discard the entire brush, the bristles on the bottom of the brush still being in good condition. By the use of my invention this waste is avoided, as a new tip can readily be attached to the brush when the tip becomes worn, thus saving the difference in the cost of the tip and the cost of an entire new brush. Since the tip portion of the brush can be manufactured at a cost of less than one half that of the cost of an entire new brush, it will be seen that the savings thus eiected will be considerable.
While I have illustrated and described my invention in some detail, it is to be understood that I am not to be limited to such details, but only by the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
I claim: Y
A brush of the character described, comprising in cross-section a substantially square brush head, a handle affixed to one end of the head, a removable tip secured to the other end of the head by means of a Vertical clamping member adapted to be positioned through the head and into openings in the end of the top and bottom portions of the removable tip ajacent the brush head, tufts of bristles aixed to the bottom portions of the brush head and removable tip, the bottom portion of the exterior end of the removable tip extending upwardly at an angle from the bottom portion of the brush head, the exposed ends of the tufts of bristles being of substantially uniform length on both the removable tip and brush head, a portion of the exposed ends of the bristles on the removable tip extending progressively upward at an angle from the bottom portion of the remaining bristles substantially parallel with the said angle of the said exterior end of thel removable tip.
