UNITED STATES JAMES HENRY C. BOIG, OF SAN FRANCTSCO, CALIFORNIA.
BLADE HOLDER.
Application filed July 3,
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of myimproved blade holder whereby certain importantadvantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set,
forth. 7
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood,'I will now proceed to describe the same with reference'to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan illustrating a holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention with the slide retracted;
Figure 2 is a view in top plan of the slide extended or in looking position;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4; of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, my improved holder comprises an elongated member M formed of suitable material and which has one end portion constructed to constitute a hand grasp 1. The opposite end portion 2 of the member M is of reduced thickness except the outeror free extremity thereof. The portion 1 of the member extending beyond the portion 2 is provided with a channel 3 the bottom face of which being flush and in continuity with. the corresponding face of the portion 2.
The outer wall of the channel 3 is provided with a restricted slot 4 through which extends an operating member or head 5 carried by the inner end portion of an 'el ongated sliding and blade locking member 6. This member 6 is of a length when fully projected or extended to have its outer extremity received within an inwardly opening recess or pocket 7 in the inner wall or face of the enlarged extremity 8. It is to be noted that the portion or extremity e5 1926. Serial No. 120,464.
the member 6 which is received within the pocket 7 is outwardly and downwardly beveled, as at .9, with the coacting. face or wall of the pocket 7 similarly formed'so that when the member 6 is fully projected it is caused to have most effective holding or retaining action with respect to an applied blade B.
The working face of the portion 2 of. the member M is provided at its transverse center with a series of longitudinally spaced outstanding projections or lugs 10 whichare adapted to extend through the openings 11 of the blade B when applied to the holder.
It is to be understood that when the blade B is applied the member 6 is fully retracted, after which said member 6 is extended for locking engagement with the outer extremity 8 resulting in the blade B beingefiectively held by the holder during a sharpening or honing operation.
It is also to be understood thatthe inner end of the channel 3 is open toprovide for the desired operation of the member 6.
It is to be noted that the portion 2 of the member M is relatively wide to permit only a marginal portion of the razor blade B to'come into contact with the razor strop and to assure the blade conforming to its natural angle with respect to the strop dur ing the honing or sharpening operation, thus preventing breakage, of the blade which would be liable to occur in the event the angle of the blade with respect to the strop during a honing or sharpening operation is too acute. By this breaking I particularly refer to breaking down the delicate edge of the razor blade which would render it useless.
As is particularly illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawing, it is to be noted that the portion 2 and locking member 6 are of such cross sectional configuration to give an approximate angle for the blade B to engage the razor strop. In other words, the portion 2 and locking member '6 are substantially diamond-shaped in cross section with the faces on an angle to cause the cutting edges of the blade B to have proper contact with the strop and particularly in a manner to substantially eliminate the probability of injuring such cutting edges as a result of a stropping operation.
From the foregoing description it is draught m be obvious that a blade holder iucted in accordance with inventive is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will alsobe obvious thatmy invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
'1. holder forrazor blades comprising *tion reduced in thicknez's with the exception of thelouter extremity thereof, the resultant f'exte'nded oppositeportion oi themember bering provided with a channel, the outer ex- 'tremity of the reduced portion of the member being provided with an inwardly opening pocket, an elongated sliding member movable within the channel, said sliding "member being of a length to permit its outer "eitt'remity, when the sliding memberis fully "extended, to engage within the pocket, the adjacent'tace of the reduced portion of the first "named member being provided with outstanding lugs.
2. A holder for razor blades comprising an elongated member having one end portion reduced in "thickness with the exception o-fttheouter extremity thereof, the resultant extended opposite portion df the member be 35 Zing provided with a channel, the outerexan "elongated member having one end portremity ofthe reduced portion of the member'being provided with an inwardly opening pocket, an elongated sliding member movable within the channel, said sliding member being of a length to permit its outer extremity, when the sliding member is fully extended, to engage within the pocket, the adjacent face of the reduced portion of the first named member being provided with outstanding lugs, the outer extremity of the sliding member having a face outwardly ant extended opposite portion of the memher being provided with a ch'annel,the outer extremity oi the reduced portion of the member belng provided wlth an inwardly opening pocket, an elongated sliding member movable within the channel, said sliding member being of a length to permit its outer extremity, when the sliding member is fully extended, to engage within the pocket, the flCljlCGDt face of the reduced portion of the first named member being provided with outstanding lugs, a wall of the channel having a slot opening into the channel, and an operating member carried by the inserted end portion of the sliding member and extending outwardly through the slot.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
