The arinci al ob'ect of my invention enerally considered, is the reinforcement of the union between integral journal boxes and the adjacent ends of east side frames for railway car trucks.
An object of my invention is the strengtlr ening of the junction nal boxes formed at the ends of side frames for railway car trucks by reinforcing'the lower flanges onthe tension member of such trucks and extending said reinforcement be-v yondthe junctions with the journal boxes and along the roofs thereof.
Another object of 'my invention is the rigidifying of the end constructionof cast side frames with journal boxes integral therewith and particularly of such side frames in which the compression and tension members are substantially T or Ishapein cross-section, by providing upstanding ribs or flanges alongthe out-er edges of the lower flanges and "of the tension member, said ribs being continued past the junction between the side frame and journal box over the roof of each journal box.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a specialreinforcement adjacent the junction between integral journal boxes and the, ends of cast side frames, said side frames preferably comprising a tension member formed with upright web portions and lower flange portions. said flange portions being united with the journal'boxes adjacent the upper inner corners'thereof and reinforced by upstanding ribs, preferably along the outeredges thereof, and longitudinally disposed, said ribs being extended from below the junction between the flange and journal box past said junction and continued over a substantial portion of the roof of the journal box, the strength of said ribs being preferably greatest-adjacent the junction between-the flange and journal box and decreasing both ways toward the ends thereof.
Other objects and advantages of the inbetween integral jour vention relating to the specific arrangement and construction of the various parts will become apparent as the description proceeds.
Referring to the drawings illustrating my invention, the scope whereof is defined by the claims:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary-sideeleyation of an end of a cast side frame for railway ear trucks, a portion thereof being shown in section; and e s F gure 2 is a plan view of that portion of the side frame shown in Figure 1.
Referring specifically to the drawings in which like reference characters designate hke'parts', there is illustrated one end of a east side frame 1 formed with a com-- pression member 2, tension member 3, and lntcgral ournal boxes 4. As will be understoodaboth ends of the frame are similar,
said frame being formed, as is usual, with a compresslon member 2 and a tension memher '3 extending substantially the full length thereof and integrally united at the ends of ,said frame to each other and to the journal boxes, the intermediate portions of said compression and tension members being spaced y bolster column or strut portions, not shown. Certain of the aforementioned features being ofusual and well known construction and not part of my present inven .tlOIl, are not illustrated.
.In the presentembodiment of my invention the compression and tension members i are both substantially F .or I shape in crosssection, that is, the compression member comprlses a substantially upright web portion 5, an upper or outer relatively wide flange portion 6, and a lower or inner relatlvely narrow and preferably tapering flange or rib portion 7. Likewise, the tension member 3 comprises a lower or outer relatively wide flange portion 8 united to'a .relativelynarrow and preferably tapering upper] or inner flange portion 9 by a substantially upright web portion 10.; The web portions 5 and 10 of the compressionand tension members, respectively, merge at their ends with eachother and with thereof or upper wall 11 of thejournal box 4. The flange or rlb portions 7 and 9 likewise are stance, substantially in line with the inner brass lug 14 although I do not wish to be limited to the exact point of union of said flange with the journal box 4.: The journal box 4 may be braced and rigidly united to the lower surface of the flange 8 by a triangular web or gusset portion 15 extending between said flange 8 and the inner wall 16' of the journal box ll. Said triangular reinforcement may comprise a longitudinal sub stantially upright web 17 and a substantially horizontal flange portion 18 merging at its ends with the'flange 8 and thewall 16 of the journal box. I
The flange 8 of the tension member is additionally reinforced and the union of the frame with the journal box materially strengthened by upstanding longitudinally extending ribs or flanges 19, preferably formed on the outer or free edges of said flange 8 and extending from a point materially below the union of said flange and journal box, beyond the unioniof the-flange and journal box, and continuing over the roof of said journal box for asubstantial portion of the extent thereof.
As will be appreciated from a consideration of Figure l'particularly, the ribs 19 preferably gradually increase in strength, height or width to a maximum adjacent the junction between the flange. 8 .and journal box 1 and from there decrease in strength, height or width to the ends of said ribs adj a cent the outer portions of the journal box roofs. Although said reinforcing ribs or flanges 19 are shown as preferably curved over the junction with the journal box, I do not wish to be restricted to this showing for said flanges may be of different formations and positioned differently from the construc tion illustrated, the showing in. the present instance being merely a preferred embodiment of my invention, as will be understood.
The outer end portions of the flanges 19 are preferably braced and connected-to the web portion 5 of the side frame by tapering or sloping webs 20 merging at their inner ends with the web 5 and at their outer ends with the ribs 19.
In view of the foregoing construction it will be appreciated that I have devised a reinforcement for the lower flange of the tension member and the junction between said flange and tension member with the integral journal boxes of cast side frames, said reinforcement serving to rigidify the structure at the union between the journal boxes and side frame and causing the flange the tension member joining each journal box roof at approximately the upper corner of the inner brasslug and reinforced'adjacent said junction by longitudinal upright ribs.

with the web of the section arranged insubtension member joining each journal box roof at approximately the upper corner of the inner brass lug and reinforced adjacent said junction by longitudinal flanges disposed along the free edges thereof, extending from below the junction with each journal box, gradually increasing in strength to approximately said junction and continuing beyond said junction over the roof of said journal box, gradually decreasing in strength to the ends thereof.
6. A car truck side frame comprising a tension member, a compression member, said members being generally T'shape in section, with the web of the section arranged in substantially upright position, journal boxes at the ends of the frame, the lower flange of the tension member oining each journal box roof at approximately the upper corner of the inner brass lug and reinforced adjacent said junction by longitudinal ribs extending upwardly from said lower flange along approximately the free edges thereof, said ribs extending from a substantial distance below the junction with each journal box, curved over said junction and continued over a.
substantial portion of the roof of each journal box, the strength of each rib being greatest adjacent the junction with the journal box and decreasing therefrom to the ends.
7. A car truck side frame comprising a tension member, a compression member, said members being generally T-shape in section, with the web of. the section arranged in sub stantially upright position, journal boxes at the ends of the frame, the lower flange of the tension member joining each journal box roof at approximately the upper corner of the inner brass lug and reinforced adjacent said junction by longitudinal upright ribs, said ribs being braced and connected to the web of the compression member at intermediate portions thereof by transverse connecting webs.
8. A car truclr side frame comprising a tension member, a compression member, said members comprising substantially upright web portions and upper and lower flanges, journal boxes at the ends of the frame, the lower flange of the tension member intersecting-and joining each journal box, and reinforced by local upstanding ribs adjacent the ends of said flange.

A car truck side frame comprising a tension member, a compression member, said members comprising substantially upright web portions and upper and lower flanges, journal boxes at the ends of the frame, the lower flange of the tension member intersecting and joining each journal box, and reinforced by local upstanding ribs adjacent the ends of said flange, said ribs extending along the edges of said flange, carried over and attached to the roofs of the journal boxes.
10. A car truck sideframe comprising a tension member, a compression member, said members comprising substantially upright web portionsand upper and lower flanges, journal boxes at the ends of the frame, the lower flange of the tension member intersecting and joining each journal box, and reinforced by local upstanding ribs adjacent the ends of said flange, said ribs increasing in strength from the ends to intermediate portions thereof, and being of maximum strength adjacent thev junctions between said flange and journal boxes.

A car truck side frame comprising a tension member, a compression member, said members comprising substantially upright web portions and upper and lower flanges, journal boxes at the ends of the frame, the lower flange of the tension member intersecting and joining each journal box, and reinforced by local upstanding ribs adjacent the ends of said flange, said ribs increasing in strength from the ends to intermediate por tions thereof, being of maximum strength adjacent the junctions between said flange and journal boxes, extending along the free edges of said flange, and continuing over the roofs of the journal boxes.
12. A car truck side frame comprising a tension member formed with a substantially upright web portion and a lower flange, journal boxes at the ends of the frame, said lower flange meeting and integrally connected with each journal box and reinforced by ribs along the edge thereof adjacent the junctions with said journal boxes.
13. A car truck side frame comprising a tension member formed with a substantially upright web and a lower flange, journal boxes integrally connected at the ends of the frame and oined with said lower flange, ribs extending along the edges of said flange and continued along a wall of the adjacent journal box for reinforcing the junction therewith.
14. A car truck side frame comprising a tension member formed with a flange which is continued to and integrally joined with the adjacent wall of each journal box, said flange being reinforced along the free edges thereof by ribs angularly disposed with respect thereto and bridging the junctions be'- tween said flange and walls and continued along other walls of said journal boxes.
