vThis invention relates to side frames for railway rolling stock and more particularly to such frames with integral journal boxes.
A principal object of my invention, generally considered, is to increase the strength of connection between the ends of the frame and the associated integral journal boxes by spacing the sides of the compression and tension 'members over said boxes to approximately correspond with thewidth of the brass lugs.
Another object of my invention is the provision of' av truck side frame in which the compression member is formed with a webk and depending flanges on either side thereof,
ysaid flanges being integrally united with the roofs of journal boxes at the ends thereof, the strength of connection with said boxes being increased by converging the flanges to approximately the width of the brass lugs.
A further object of my invention is to provide a truck side frame in which the compression member is generally inverted. U-
' shape in cross section'between integral journal boxes at the ends thereof, the strength of the union with said journal boxes being increased by changing said member over the boxes to double I section.
A still further object of my invention to provide a truck side frame formed with a compression member. and a tension member united with journal boxes at the ends thereof,
' the compression member being formed with an upper web and side flanges depending therefrom and the strength of connection with the boxes being increased by converging the flanges beneath the web to form pockets over the roofs of the journal boxes.
Other objects and advantages of the invention relating to the particular arrangement and construction of the various parts will become apparent as the description proceeds.

Referring to the drawings in detail, like parts being designated by like reference characters, and first considering the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. l to 4, in- 995 elusive, there is shown one end of a truck side frame l, comprising a compression meniber 2, a tension member 3, and a journal box 4 integrally connected to said frame adjacent the union of the compression and tension members. The intermediate portion of said frame may be of conventional construction and involve bolster guide columns or strut portions, not shown, spacing the intermediate portionsof said compression and tensionr members and spaced apart to leave a bolster opening-of conventional or desired character.
The compression member 2, as illustrated particularly in Fig. 3, in the present embodi- 1 ment is generally inverted U-shape in cross section and formed with an upper web 5 and flanges 6 depending therefrom. The tension member, although shown U-shape in cross section with a lower web 7 and upstanding `flanges 8. may be of other configuration if desires. The web 7 of said tension member is connected to the inner side wall of the journal box adjacent the roof thereof by being extended to the junction between. said roof and side wall and preferably reinforced by triangular gusset portions 9. rlhe strength of connection between the tension member and inner side wall of the box may be further reinforced by a tie or strut portion l0 which o5 is preferably angular in section. Although only one end of the frame is illustrated, it will be understood that said frame is symmetrical and the other end corresponds with the end shown.
rlhe journal box, is usual, is provided with inner and outer brass lugs 11 and 12, respectively. Said brass lugs, although not primarily for that purpose, act as reinforcements in the side walls of the box. For greatest strength of connection between the box and the compression and tension members it is therefore important that lsaid members unite with vthe roof of the box as near as possible to the reinforcing` brass lugs. ln
order, however,to get suilicien strength inA the compression and tension members the same are preferably generally considerably ywider than the width of said brass lugs. ln order, therefore, to increase the strength of .connection between the frame members and `ward parallel: to each other and are discontinued at the outer side ywall of the box by merging with the webb which preferably curvesdownwardly to aline and merge with the outer side. wall 13 of said box l. in order to effect a saving in weight of material the web 5 between theiianges 6 of the compression member is preferably discontinued short of a union with the roof ofthe box. rlhis discontinuance also facilitates core removal. It will be evident that this construction provides for a substantially direct union between the flanges G of the compression member and those portions lof the roof of the box at or adjacent the brass lugs 1l and 12 so that a very secure connection between the frame members and the box is effected.
Referring now to the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. 5 and (i, a construction is there disclosed in which the side frame 1a is, as before, formed with a compression member 2, a tension member 8, and an 4integral journal box 4a.
Said compression member comprises an upper web 5a and side flanges 6a, as in the first embodiment. The side flanges, however, do not converge gradually from a considerable distance inwardly of the journal box lt1 but start to convergi` approximately directly over the inner wall 14r of the journal box 4a and curve toward each other so that they merge together approximately directly on the vertical center linepf the journal box as indicated at 15. From there to the outer brass lng 12 of the box they extend as a single flange or web 16 where they merge'with the web lVfB-of the maaien compression member which is curved downwardly to aline and merge with the inner wall of the brass lug 12a.- v
rihe foregoingconstruction, as will be apparent, results in a rigidiication of the roof of the `journal box in the regionof the brass lugs so that the compression member, and of course the tension member which merges therewith at the ends of said members, yare thereby very securely connected to thejournal box. 0n account of the lconverging of the flanges of the tension and compression members'beneath the web of the compression member and above the roof of the box, pockets 17 are formed between said box and the web 5a of the compression member as in the previous form. Except as specifically described in connection'with the present. embodiment the same may correspond with that of the first..
Referringnow to the embodiment of myl invention illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8, a side frame 1b isthere disclosed having va ,compressionmember 2b, a tension member 3b, and a journal box lb integral therewith. Both compression 'and tension members may have webs 5" and 7b, respectively, Ywith flanges 6b and 8", respectively, extending toi` ard each other and merging at the junction between the members where they unite with the journal box. v. Y 1 f v 1n order to rigidity the connection with the journalbox the side flanges 6b and 8b of the members are caused to converge toward each other beneath the web 5b of the compression member preferably directly over 4the inner brass lug 11b so that said side walls are concave outwardly and are spaced closest together immediately over the inner brass lug 11b and approximately the same distance apart as the width of said brass lug so that they merge with the lroof of the Yjournal box lb at approximately th-e same place that the brass lug connects therewith. This construction results in pockets 171 as in the previous embodiment except that said pockets are spaced nea-r the inner brass lug` rather than near the outer brass lug. Beyond the pockets 17b the flanges 16 are continued at the normal distance apart tothe outer side wall 13b of the journal box and merge with the roof thereof on. either side of the outer brass lug 12b. As in the first form of my invention the web f'of the compression member 2b is discontinued. short of a union with the roof of the journal box between the flanges 6b thereof. Except asspeciflcally disclosed in `connection with the present form of my invention, the same may correspond with that of the first embodiment.
ln the foregoing description I have shown how the connection between the integral j ournal boxes and the ends of a side frame having tension and compression members, re-
spectively U and inverted U in cross section, Vmay be rigidified. It will be obvious, how- 'los . invention may be secured in connection with side frames havingmembers shaped other than as disclosed in the present application.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. A truck side frame comprising a compression member and a tension member uniting at their ends, journal boxes integrally united to the trame at the ends of said members, the union with said journal boxes being strengthened by causing the sides of the members to converge over the roofs of the boxes to a width less than that ofthe top wall of the compression member.
9.. A truck side frame comprising a compression member and a tension member united together and a journal box adjacent the end of the frame, the union of said members with said box being strengthened by causing the sides of said members to converge, beneath the top wall of the compression member to a Width less than said wall, to approximately the width of the brass lugs and unite with the roof of the box.
3. A truck side frame comprising U-shaped compression and tension members uniting at their ends, journal boxes integrally united to the frame adjacent the ends of said members, said members changing from U to double I section over the journal boxes for increasing the strength of connection therewith.
A truck side Yframe comprising a com pression member, a tension member, said compression member being generally inverted U- shape in cross section and the tension member being generally U-shape in cross s-ection, the side flanges of said members uniting together, and a journal box integral with said members at the ends thereof, the strength of connectiony with said journal box being in creased by converging the side flanges of the members beneath the web of the compression member to form pockets over the rootI of the journal box.
5. A truck side frame comprising a compression member generally inverted U-shape in cross section, and a ournal box integrally connected beneath the end thereof to the sides of said member, the strength of connection therewith being increased by spacing the side ilanges of said member over the roof of rthe ournal box to approximately correspond with the width of the brass lugs.
6. A truck side frame comprising a compression member and a tension member uniting at their ends, journal boxes integrally united to the frame at the ends of said meinbers, the union with said journal boxes being strengthened by converging the sides of the members over the roots of the boxes and extending the compression member to imite directly with the outer brass lug.

A truck side frame comprising a compression member generally inverted U-shape in cross section with a web and depending flanges, a journal box united to said flanges, the strength of connection being increased by converging said flanges over t-he inner brass lug of said box to approximately the width thereof. l 8. A ytruck side frame comprising a compression member generally inverted U-shape in cross section with a web and depending flanges, a journal box integral with said flanges at the end of said member, said langes converging together over the roof of said box, and the web continued to unite with the inner wall of the outer brass lug.
9. A truck side 'frame comprising a compression member generally inverted U-shape in cross section with a web and depending side flanges, and a journal box integral therewith, said flanges uniting with the roof of the box and converging together at approximately the vertical centerline of said box.

A truck side frame comprising a compression member generally inverted U-shape in cross section with a web and depending iianges, a journal box integrally united to said flanges, said flanges over the inner brass lug of said box being curved inwardly beeath the web of said member to approximately the width of said lug.

A truck side frame comprising a compression member with an upper web and iianges depending from the sides thereof, a journal box integral with the lower portion oi said flanges, the connection with said journal box being strengthened by causing said flanges to gradually converge toward each other beneath the web of the member from a point inwardly of the journal box until they are approximately the same distance apart as the width of the brass lugs.
