Be it known that I, THEoDoRE GENSMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, county of Multnomah, and State ot Oregon, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Desk Pads, of which the following' is a specification.

One of the main objects of my invention is to provide a desk pad comprising a paper container, and an inclined writingl surface projecting` therefrom, a roll ot paper in said container, the end of the paper being); brought thru a slot of the container, under the writ-ing surface and around the lower end thereof, thence back over the latter. whereby that portion of the paper overlying the writing surface may be drawn up from ol" the latter surface, and the adjacent section of the paper brought over the ,vritingr surface, in so doing permitting; the notations on that section ofthe paper written on to be continued consecutively, on the consecutive sections of the paper unwound from said roll, as drawn over said writinc; surta/e.

A further object is to provide a desk pad the bodyof which can be stamped from a. single piece of metal, the writingsurface of which is inclined.

Another feature ot my invention is that the cutting bar is made integral with the body of the desk pad and thus is allowed no movement during the cutting; operation.

A further obj ect of my i nvention is to proH vide a light, compact desk pad which can be conveniently carried but which is suiliciently substantial to withstand Vordinary usa-ge.

Portable desk pads as heretofore made do not allow the notation to be continued consecutively, but when the bottom ot' the s ieet is reached, the sheet must be torn and a new sheet arranged upon the writing).` surface. By my invention the paper can be rolled until a new sheet appears upon the writing.;r surface and the old sheet can be lett attached and placed in a suitable adjacent container. Thus, Jfor example, a court reporter could continue to write continuously without turninp` pages and when transcribinghis notes could check back to previous notationsV without the confusion necessary by present methods.

It is to be noticed that there are no movingrv parts in my desk pad. The cylindrical container for the paper also acts as a support for the writing surface and is relatively higher than the bottom end of the desk pad so that the writing surface assumes a convenient angle. p All these and other objects I have shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

It is supported by a. core l held on each side by means of pins gr lmounted in core it, bearing` in the end caps i, said .cr-ips4 being removably attached to the cylindrtcal container o. The container b has an opening y' thru which the paper e is allowed to pass. The paper e passes underneath the writing' surface c, around its lower end c. thru the transverse slot 7c, under the raised portion Z, over the writing surface o, thence thru the upper transverse, slot m, under the integral cutting bar n and out thru the uppermost transverse slot o. The paper is held by the clamp p which bears' against the under edgeof the integral cutting bar n thereby holdingl the upper or free end ot' the paper e. This holds the paper taut across thewwriting surface c.

yThe spring clamp 1 0 is fastened to the under side of the writing surface c by means of the rivets q and has a flange 79 on its lower extremity, positioned in which is a. guiding slot 1', thru which the paper passes. Clamp p has an ear s on its upper edge which facilitates the releasing' motion. This may also be madecut out, The year at s has a cut out portion t., 'the opening being of such size as toallow the finger to be easily inserted therein. The releasiizglopere ation is as follows:

The linger is inserted in the opening t and placed under the integral cutting bar n and the paper is drawn forward and the clamp released by a single motion. Paper is drawn out until a portion of thepa-per can be grasped between the thumb and forenger as shown in Fig. Q/and, then hany desired amount of papel' can beL drawn out.

I claim:

l. A desk pad consisting ot a one piece sheet metal body, one end ot the body terminating in a cylindrical container, the other end terminating in a curved back support, the intermediate section of the body being fiat and constituting a. writing surface, said curved back portion being provided with a transverse slot, said container having a transverse opening beneath said intermediate section, and a yielding clamping member bearing on said body.

A desk pad consisting of a one piece sheet. metal body, one end of the body terminating in a cylindrical container7 the other end terminating` in aA curved back support, the intermediate section of the body being flat and constituting a writing sur face, said curved back portion being priovided with a transverse slot, said container having a transverse opening beneath said intermediate section the upper endV of said intermediate section being provided with a transverse cutter bar located approximately above saidv container,- and a yielding v clamping member bearing on the under side of said intermediate portion, the opening provided by onev of ,sa1d upper transverse slots being enlarged and overlying said `clamping member thereby adapted to perport, the intermediate section of the body being flat and constituting a writing suie face, said `curved back portion being pro-V vided with a transverse slot, said container having a transverse opening beneath 'said intermediate sectiom'the Vupper end of said intermediate section being provided with 'a transverse cutter bar locatedapproximately above said container, rand a yielding clamping member bearing on tlie un'dei1 side of said intermediate portion', said clamping member projecting through the uppermost of said upper slots.
