Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1915.
Application filed March 30, 1914. Serial No. 828,121.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PAUL RAPPAPORT, a citizen of the United. States, and resident of New York city, borough of Brooklyn, in the county'of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Covers for Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a display cover adapted to be applied upon a suitable box and having means to retain the box lid in an opened position, with means to removably retain a transparent protecting sheet over the box, as well as to provide means for retaining a moistener or an advertising card or the like within the box when the latter is to be used for the display of cigars and the like.
My invention comprises novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fullyhereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box equipped with my improvements; Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of a portion of my improved display cover; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3, 3, in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4, 4, in Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a detail edge view.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 1 indicates any suitable box having a lid 2 hinged thereto in a well known manner.
My improved cover comprises an open frame 3, preferably made of metal, adapted to fit along the top edges of the box sides, and shown provided with flanges 3 depending around said sides. At the side adjacent to the hinge 2 of lid 2 the frame 3 is shown provided with a wire 5 extending near an edge of said frame, and said wire may be carried by said frame in any suitable manher. I have shown said wire as journaled in guides or eyes 4 that are soldered or otherwise formed on the under surface of frame 3, and the opposite ends of said wire are bent into loop or eye-form at 5 to receive opposite edges of lid 2, said eyes being shown suitably spaced to slide along said lid. The eyes 5 may be formed at the ends of arms 5 by bending the wire laterally at 5, then upwardly and outwardly at 5 and then reversely at 5. At 6 is a clamping member,
which may be in the form of a metal strip sultably secured to said wire between itsarms 5 so as to rock therewith. For such purpose strip 6 may have one or more eyes 6 receiving said wire and soldered thereto. One or more springs 7, shown coiled upon wire 5 and operating at one end against clamping member 6 and at the opposite end coacting with frame 3, serve to cause member 6 to normally be pressed toward the transverse part 3 of cover frame 3.
At one side of frame 3, shown on the side opposite to the transverse part 3 of the frame, is secured a strip or ledge 8 upon which the adjacent edge of a transparent sheet of glass or other suitable protecting material 9 rests, the opposite edge of said sheet 9 being supported by clamping member 6, as shown in Fig. 3. By this means the sheet of glass 9 is detachably held within frame 3 and may be readily removed for cleaning and replacement.
Where my improved cover is to be used in conjunction with cigar boxes I may provide a suitable moistener, such as a strip of blotting paper, felt or the like 10 or an advertising card (Fig. 3) located between gripping member 6 and glass sheet 9, and held therebetween by the gripping action of member 6 against the glass, and said member 6 may be provided with any desired number of apertures 6 for the passage of moisture into the box. A'strip 11 may extend along the outer edge of part 3 and along the arms 5 of wire 5, and may-be secured to said arms as by solder, thereby concealing said arms and most of the eyes 5*, and serving also, when desired, for carrying signs and the like.
To apply my improved display cover upon the box, the lid 2 is opened, the display cover is placed above the box and its eyes 5 are lowered along the edges of the lid until the frame 3 rests upon the box, the glass 9 being held in the frame by gripping action of member 6. The weight of the display cover maintains the lid 2 in an inclined position by means of the arms 5 and wire 5, and the weight of the lid serves to cause member 6 to press against glass 9. The springs 7, therefore, may be dispensed with, and the weight of lid 2 may serve solely to press member 6 toward the glass, although by the use of the springs the member 6 is normally maintained pressed toward the glass regardless of the action of lid 2, and
when the cover is beinghandled. When the contents of the box are to be reached, lid 2 may be tilted backwardly and by acting through the arms'5 to press member ,6 towardthe glass 9 and frame 3, the whole dis play cover will be tilted inian upward direction, and then when the lid 2 is released the display cover will return over the box.
My improvements afford a simple and inexpensive :means for protecting cigars and the like within a box and permitting observation thereof, as well as a convenient means to permit moistening the contents of the .box, and enabling the moistening strips to 'be readily replaced. This will be readily advantageous when the displayv cover is moved from one box to another for replacement of a moistening strip or advertising card for each box the cover is applied on.
Changes may be made in the details of construction shown and described, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having now 'describedmy invention what 7 I claim -1s':
1. A display cover comprising a frame adapted to fit over axbox, a protecting sheet,
1 a support for the sheet at oneside of the a support for vthesheet atone side of the Gupta-o! thh-patentamay be obtained tor -frame,.a gripping memberfor the sheet pivotally carried at another side of the frame, and one or more arms connected with said framegforengagement withthe boxlid, and
a spring coacting with said gripping member and frame to clamp said member against said protecting sheet.
3. A display cover comprising a frame adapted to fit over a box and provided with a ledge along one side, a transparent sheet having one edge supported by said ledge, a
gripping member pivotally carried by said frame to engage along an edge of said glass sheet to retain the latter removably within the frame, means to maintain said gripping member pressed toward said glass sheet, and means connected with said frame to coact with the box lid to retain the latter in an opened position.
4. A display cover comprising a frame adapted to fit over a box, a protecting sheet, a sup-port for the sheet at one side of the frame, a gripping member for the sheet at another side of the frame, means pivotally supporting said member upon said frame, and one or more arms connected with said pivotal member and having means to receive the box lid.
5. A display cover comprising a frame adapted to fit over a box, a protecting sheet, a support for the sheet at one side of the frame, a gripping member for the sheet at T. F. BOURNE, MARIE F. WAINRIGHT.
