Patented Jan. 13, 1925.
tJldlTE-fi TATES iszaesa GARMENT.
Application filed November 7, 1921. 7 Serial No. 513,482.
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, SUE M. VooRHnEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bris tow, in the county of Prince lVilliam and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment-s, of which the hallo-wing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garments and has more especial relation to underbodies for children, such as is used for supporting pant-s, drawers and hose.
)ne of the objects of the present invention is the provision of an underbody which will adjust itself to the form of the wearer and accommodate itself to'either a narrow or broad shouldered person, permitting vabsolute free movement of the wearer without strain at any point.
Another object is theprovision of an under-body which is capableof adjustment so as to properly fit either astout or thin child, or for adapting it to children of -different sizes and thus reduce the number of different sizes necessary for manufacturers.
Another object is the provision of a body of the above stated type, wherein the button band or reinforcing waist band, is of novel construction, the said band being formed of the material'of which the body made without cuttin the material from the garment.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, the figure shown is a view of the outside of a garment constructed in accordance with. the invention, the garment being spread out.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the body is shown as being formed of separate complement-a1 members 10, each of which comprises a body portion from which extends a breast strap 11 and a back strap 12, the material between these straps being cut away to accommodate the arm pit, as shown at 13.
The breast strap of one member 10 and the back strap of the other member 10 is connected by elastic tapes 1%, which provide a strap for engagement over the shoulder of the wearer and these elastic tapes 14:, together withth'e breast and back straps form an arm hole for the passage of the arms.
The rear portions of each of the members 10 are removably and adjustably secured together. This securing means is intlie form (a) of spaced buttons 15, which are carried by one member 10 and spaced button holes 16 formed in the other member 10, the said buttons and holes being under the waist line of the body so that the latter is connected together only at this point. This permits'of free relative movement of the upper back part of the section 10 and thus permits of a free movement of the wearer without binding at any point. It also permits the body and thus adapt a garment of one size for children of different sizes. This materially reduces the number of different sizes necessary for the manufacture and sale of the garment.
The garment is preferably of a double illlCknGSS and comprises an outer thickness 19 and an inner thickness 20 and in order to provide a reinforcing waist band, the outer thickness is folded over and this folded over portion is stitched along each edge so as to provide a band 21 whose lower edge is spaced from the lower edge of the body. By forming the waist band 21 in this manner, it is not necessary to employ a separate piece of material or cut material of which the hand is formed, from the body.
The reinforcing band 21 also serves as a means for attaching buttons 22, by means of which the body may be used to support oants or drawers the said buttons 22 bein secured upon tapes 23. whose ends are stitched beneath the fold of the reinforcing band 21. It is also preferred to provide the neck and arm pit edges cf the body with a facing 2th, of tape or similar material which is secured along the inside edges. in Figure 1 of the drawings, the body is shown as having attached thereto a pair of hose supporters 25, he latter comprising hose grips 26 which are secured at the outer ends of no tapes 27. The supporters are adjustable in length through the medium of adjusting buckles 28.
In order to secure the hose supporters 25 to the body, there is provided a coupling which includes a body carried member 29 and a hose supporter carried member 30. The member-29 is shown as being provided with spaced parallel slots, one of which receives a tape 32 which is secured beneath the reinforcing band 21 after the manner of the tapes 23. The member is secured to one end of anattaching tape 34, the latter being secured to one of the buckles 28.
It is preferred to provide two tapes 3% and the foremost of these tapes, that is the tape which is attached closest the front of the body is slightly shorter than the other tape so as to bring the hose supporter into proper position for attachment to the hose and sateen or other like material, which will not fall withinthe scope of the appended claims. I
Having described the invention what is claimed is: g
1. An undergarn'ient comprising a body open at the front and back to provide separate body sections, shoulder straps having their ends connected to the oppos'ite'ends of opposite sections, whereby the upper por tions of the body sections will be relatively movable and a row of spaced-horizontally arranged fastening devices located at the Waist of each body section of the garment to adjustably connect the sections.
2. A garment comprising a pair of body sections, each of said sections including a frontand back, a shoulder strap extending from the front and back of each section, the strap of one front being connected to the back of the other section and means connecting the backs of the sections at the waistline of the garment with the remaining adjacent portions of theback free.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. i
SUE M. VOO'RHEES.
