Patented (let. 7, 1924.
UNITED "STATES FRANCIS S. INGO, DE LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
CONCEALABLE FOLDING BED.
Application filed May :24, 1.922.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I. Framers S. Inoo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Conceal-able Folding Bed, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the manufacture of concealable folding beds which are incorporated as part of an article of furniture which serves as a concealing means for the folded bed.
It is an object of my invention to provide an article of furniture which will conceal. a specially constructed folding bed and will permit easy access to the cavity in which the folding bed is concealed.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a davenport which may be extended to give an additional seating capacity.
The specific advantages and further objects of my invention will be made evident hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings which are for illustrative purposes only,
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a davenport adapted to conceal the folding bed, the (lavenport being shown therein in extended position.
Fig. 2 is a section taken upon the vertical plane represented by the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a somewhat diagrammatic plan view illustrating the manner in which the folding bed is removed from the cavity provided in the davenport for its concealment.
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the folding bed shown concealed in the davenport in Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a plan view illustrating another method of practicing the extension feature of my invention.
Fig. 6 is an elevational view of the opened end of the davenport shown in Fig. 5.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 I provide a davenport 11 having a cavity 12 formed in the back 13 thereof. A side member 15 forming1 one of the arms 16 of the davenport 11 is inged at 17 to a post 18 provided at the back of the davenport, so that the member 15 may be swung into the extended position shown in Figs. 1 and 3. When this member 15 is so extended, the open end 20 of the cavity 12 is exposed so that the folding bed 21 may be removed from the cavity as shown at 22 in Fig. 3. After the bed 21 has been removed from the cavity 12, the member 15 erial No. 563,242.
may be swung back into closed position against the seat of the davenport as indicated by the dotted lines 23 of Fig. 3, or if it be desired to provide additional seating capacity to the davenport, a seat extension 25 which hinges at 26 may be swung from the concealed position 2 1 into the extended position 27 by revolving upon the hinges 26 as indicated by the arrow 28. The seat member 29 is hinged to the box structure 30 of the davenport at 31 so that it may be swung into the position indicated, by the dotted lines 33 in Fig. 2, so that access to the concealed extension seat 25 may be had. The extension 25 is provided with foldable legs 34 for supporting the outer end of the seat when the seat is extended. The lower portion of the box structure 30 provides a chamber 35 in which blankets and other bed clothes may be kept.
Thebed' 21 which I employ comprises a i i wheeled carriage 38 upon which the head section 39 of the mattress supporting structure of the bed is pivoted at 40. The foot section 41 of the bed is joined to the head section by connecting links 12 and retractile legs 13 and 1 1 are provided to support the spring supporting frame of the bed when the bed is unfolded as shown in Fig. 1. A further description herein of the bed 31 is omitted, as this device is presented in detail in my application for Letters Patent Serial No. 563,241 on a folding concealable bed bearing the same date as this application.
In Figs. 5 and 6 1 illustrate another method whereby a seat extension may be provided with the davenport. In these figures a davenport 50 has an arm member 51 pivotally attached thereto at 52in the same manner as describd in the first embodiment of my invention. The seat 54 of this davenport is hinged at 55 so that it may be swung back into the position indicated by the dotted lines 56 to provide access to a compartment 57. A cavity 58 is also formed in the back 59 into which the bed 21, folded as illustrated in Fig. 2, may be concealed, the member 51 forming a cover or closure for the concealment chamber 58 when it is in the position indicated by the dotted lines 62 of Fig. 5. In this embodiment of my invention a seat board 65 is hinged upon the inside of the member 51 at 6%. This seat member 63 when folded occupies the position indicated at 67 and is provided with foldable legs 68 for its support when extended as shown at 69. The seat cushion 70 which I show upon theseat board 63 in Fig. 6 maybe stored. within the compartment 57 when not in use.
Although I have shown but one swingable arm member upon each of the davenports, it will be perceived that the arms 75 may also be pivotally attached to the back of the davenport and seat extensions provided at both ends of the davenport. The particular feature of my invention resides in the provision of means whereby such a folding bed as I employ may be removed from the concealment cavity without having to move the entire davenport, but may be accomplished by merely opening an end thereof. The bed which I employ is of such size and shape that it maybe easily moved'from place to place and be'ing'so constructed that a low center of gravity is provided, it may be. moved without danger of overturning upon the mover.
I claim as my invention:
1. Inanarticle of furniture, the combination of: .a davenport including a hollow back of substantially the usual thickness; one of the side members of said davenport being pivotally mounted at its rear edge to swing rearwardly to open the corresponding side of said back; and a folding bed constructed to be folded up within a narrow spaceto be contained normally in .said back and to be drawn out the same for use when said side member is swung into open position.
2. In an article of furniture, the combination of: a davenport having acavity formed in the back thereof; side members forming the arms of said davenport and being pivoted to said davenport on a vertical axis so as to be swingable into a position of lateral extension to provide access to said cavity; and a foldable bed adapted to be contained in said cavity and seat structures adapted to form extensions to the seat of said davenport when said side members are extended.
3. In an article of furniture, the combination of: a davenport; one of the side members of said davenport being hinged at .its rear edge to the corresponding side of the davenpor-t to swing outwardly 90 degrees; a seat extension pivoted to the upper edge of said side of the davenport adapted to swing under the seat of the davenportwhen not in use and to be swung outwardly from said side on a level with said seat when said side is swung out.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los' Angeles, California, this 17th day of May, 1922. a
