CHAR ES EUGENE MELOI-IER, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED CHAIR AND WARDROBE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Applicationfiled April 4, 1919. Serial No. 287,384.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it know that I, Cnannns E. Mnnonnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Chairs and Wardrobes, of which the followingis a specification. 7
In theaters and other auditoriums little or no provision is made for the reception of hats and wraps on the chairsor seats for the audience, and consequently'such hatsxand wraps have been subject to injury by persons passing between the rows of seats or chairs.
It is the object of the present invention to produce a seat or chair for an auditorium in which both the bottom and the back of the seat are provided with compartments normally closed by suitable doors, and the said compartments being designed to receive the hat and wraps of the occupant of the seat. 7
Other objects and advantages will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the im provement.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. -Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view ap proximately on the line 3+3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. l is a sectional View approximately on the line l4 of Fig. 1. I
Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the improvement. i
Fig. 6 is a view showing the seat raised for convenience of persons passing through a row of seats. r I
The chair isbroadly indicated by the numeral 10, the same including thesides 11, back 12 and seat 13. The seat is pivotally. connected between the sides 11 as at 14L The seat has its bottom wall, at its rear end rounded as at 15 so that the outer edge there of contacts with the inner end of the back. This will prevent a person to the rear of the seat resting his feet on such seat. The seat 13 is in the nature of a bo'x,having one of its sides provided at its outer or upper end with a cleat 16 to which isfhinged, as at 17 a door or cover 18. Below the cleat are inwardly extending lugs 19 which receive the Patented Mar. 9, 1920..
the outer end of the said door. or cover resting upon the opposite side of the box-like seat. Both the door and cleat may be suitably upholstered, and it will be apparent that such construction provides a means whereby the hat'or small articles of the user of the seat may be conveniently deposited when not required for use. 7
The back 12 is also in the nature of a boxlike member, having *OIljOIlG of its inner edges a cleat 20, and to this cleat is hinged a door 21. The interior of the box-like back is provided with suitable hooks and, if desired, hangers whereby the wraps of the user of the chair may be supported. Preferably the hinges 22 for the door are spring influenced, which is also true ofthe hinges 17 of the door 18 for the seat 13. The back is suitably upholstered, so that the compartments provided by the back and the seat do not interfere with the artistic appearance of the chair. 7
It is believed, from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the ac- 1 companying drawings, the simplicity of the construction and the advantages thereof will be readily apparent without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what i is claimed as new is A chalr for the purpose set forth, comprising a frame, including a back, legs and sides, of a seat therefor comprising a boxlike member open at its top and having its rear wall rounded, the sldes of the seat pivoted to the sides of the frame adjacent .to the rear thereof, a longitudinal cleat at one of the upper edges of the seat, a top member hlngedly secured thereto, transverse cleats for supportlng the top member when the same is closed, and the rear wall of the seat designed to contact with the lower wall of the back to normally sustain the seat horizontally on the frame.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CHARLES EUGENE MELCHER. Y
