UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR H. SCHRAM, OF OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN, 'ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T ERNEST SCHLERF, OF OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN.
,DAVENPORT.
Application filed January 25, 191% Serial No. 273,101.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ,OsoAR H. ISOI-IRAM, a
I citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Davenports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in davenports of the character set'forth in ,my application for U. S. Letters Patent,
filed J une 18th, 1918, and serially numbered 40,580, and has for one of its objects the provision of a closuremember adapted to conceal the connection between the stationary and movable spring frames when the device is in seat forming position and which is provided with means for causing the "same to pass under the stationary frame when the device is in bed forming position.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a back that will support a cushion in an inclined plane when the device is in seat forming position and which is maintained in this position by legs that will act as supports to the outer edge of the movable frame when the device is. in bed forming position, permitting the back to assume a substantially vertical position so as to not interfere with or overlie the stationary frame.
A further object of thisinvention 'is the provision of end members to the movable frame jnormally disposed between the frames when the device is in seat forming position and which are capable of being moved into vertical position when the device is made into a bed. e
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a davenport of the above vention, reference is to be had to the follow- 1ng descriptlon and accompanying drawings I in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a davenport constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. '2' is a transverse sectional" view of the same,
Fig. 3 is asimilar View with the device in bed forming position,
F ig. 4 is a detail sectional view illustrating the means for causing the, concealing member to move under the stationary frame 'when the device is in bed forming position,
Flg. 5 is an enlarged deta1l view of one of the hinges for establishing a connection between the frames, Fig. 6 is a detail view illustrating the mannerof connecting the back to the side members of the davenport,
Fig. 7 1s a deta1l view of one of the end members for the movable frame,
Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view of one of the hinges employed between the frames.
Referring 1n deta1l to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates as an entirety a davenport including side members 2 and a back v 3 which supports the side members in vertical and relatively spaced'position. A stationary spring frame 4 is secured to the side members and has hingedly connected thereto a movable spring frame 5 which is adapted to overlie the stationary frame 4 when the device is in seat forming position and when in bed forming position, the movable frame is swung to a parallel plane with the stationary frame, thereby forming a considerable width to the bed. The frames 4 and 5 have secured thereto a bed spring 6 of any desired construction and which will fold intermediately whenlthe frames are swung one upon the other. When the frame which areprovided with openings adapted to register with openings inv the ears of the angle iron brackets to receive pintle rods 10 which are secured to the respective frames as shown at 11, so that the movable frame 5- is provided with a double hinge connection between itself and the stationary frame,-
The connecting members are provided with angularly related members 13 which are adapted to form supports and rests for one edge of the movable" frame 5 when in seat forming position and also bed forming position. the members'13 engagetne frames when the device is in bed forming position and the ends ofthe other member 13 engage said frames when the device is in seat forming position. The free edge of the movable" frame 5 is provided with legs 14 that are inclined outwardly and downwardly so as to engage the ground or floor for firmly sup- 1 )0rtingthe movable frame 5 in bed forming position' When the movable frame 5 is swung) over the stationary frame 4, the legs are disposed upwardly and rearwardly to support the lower edge of a pivotedback 15 so as to dispose said back in an inclined plane for making a comfortable back rest. The upper edge of the back is pivoted to the upper ends of the side members 2. The pivoted' back may be known as a pillow rest as the same is adapted to support a pillow or' cushion when the device is in'seat forming position an inclined plane, thus cooperating with the cushion upon the movable frame in forming a comfortable seat to the user. I
End frames 16 are pivotally connected to the ends of the movable-frame 5 by ears 17 andwhen the movable name is swung over the stationary frame, the end frames are disposed between the movable and stationary frames, or between the fold of the bed frame.
coir Sprin s is are connec't edto the end frames and to the movable frame for holding the frames 16 either horizontally or vertically.
The concealing member 19 consists of strips of boards 20' and 21 connected by hinges 22. One edge of the strip or board 21 secured by hinges 24 to a member23 It will be seen that the ends of one of which is in turn secured to one. face and adjacent one edge of the movable frame, 5. When the movable frame 5 is in seat forming position, the member 23 is disposed uppermost to form a stop or abutment for the front edge of the cushion or seat located upon the movable frame 5. The side members at a point under the stationary frame 4 are provided'with" inclined slots 25 having metallic lining 26 adapted to receive arms 27 carried by the strip or board 20 of the concealingmemb'er 19" so that when the movab'le frame 5 is swung into bed forming'p'o: sition, the concealing member 1 9 is caused or compelled to slide under the stationary frame t, and when the movable frame 5 is swi'ing into seat forming position, the slots and arms' 'cau'se the connecting member to assume a vertical position concealing. the
tions and said side portions adjacent their lower edges having inclined grooves, metallic linings for sald grooves, a stationary frame carried by said portions, a movable frame hinged to the stationary frame, an
abutment secured to the" inner longitudinal" edge of'the" movable frame and projecting beyond the same, a pair of hingedly connected concealing membersand one of said members hinged to the projected portion of the abutment, an arm secured to the other concealing member and projecting in said grooves. v v
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR H. SCHRAM.,
ivitnessesz v V I FRANK B. Knnru, HENRY O. ,BARBEN.
