" J. E. GOODWIN FIRE ALARM Filed March a, 1924 magnum: 21
adwilggmmm Patented Apr. 20, 1926.
UNITED STATES JAMES E. GOODWIN, OF CEDAR BLUFF, VIRGINIA.
FIRE ALARM.
Application filed March s, 1924..' Serial No. 697,793.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. GooDwIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Bluff, in the county of Tazewell and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Fire Alarm, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide novel means for mounting and housing a switch lever and parts associated therewith.
In the drawings Figure l is a section on the line 1-1 of Figure 2,
Figure 2 is a top plan,
Figure 3 is an end elevation, and
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
In carrying out the invention there is pro vided an insulating base 2 and an insulating body 3, the body being held on the base by securing elements 4 -4 and 5-5. The securing elements 4 retain the conductors 6 of a closed signal circuit, and the securing ele ments 5 embody means external to the body 3 for retaining the conductors 7 of an open circuit. The securing elements 4 carry a fusible conducting bar 10.
The body 3 has recesses 11 and 12 connected by a reduced slot 14. Intermediate its ends, the body 3 is provided with lateral chambers 15, communicating with the intermediate portion of the slot 14. The recesses 11 and 12 and the slot 14 extend from the base 2 entirely through the body 3 from top to bottom, but the chambers 15 are formed in the bottom of the body 3 and do not extend upwardly through the upper surface of the body. Spring terminals 16 are located in the chambers 15 and are held on the base 2 by nuts 17 on the securing elements 5. A fulcrum member 18 is located in the recess 11 of the body 3 and is secured at 19 to the base 2, the member 18 and the securing means 19 being accessible through the recess 11. A switch lever 20 is fulcrumed at 21 on the member 18 and extends through the slot 14 and through the recess 12, as well as through an opening 22formed in one end of the body 3. The free end of the switch lever 20 rests on the fusible bar 10. A. weight 23 is disposed in the recess 12 and is slida-ble for adjustment along the switch lever 20, the weight being held in adjusted positions by a set screw 24, which is accessible through the recess 12.
When the parts are arranged as shown in Figure 1, the lever 20 rests on the fusible bar 10 and is held releasably thereby out of engagement with the terminals 16. The device then includes a closed circuit comprising the conductors 6, the securing elements; 4, and the fusible bar 10. When the bar 10 melts, this circuit is opened and a signal may be operated.
When the bar 10 fuses, the lever 20 swings downwardly on its fulcrum 21, under the action of the weight 23, and engages the terminals 16. Then, there is established a closed circuit including the conductors 7, the securing elements 5, the terminals 16, and the lever 20 which acts as a bridge be tween the terminals. In this way, another signal may be operated.
I claim In a device of the class described, a base and a body on the base, the body having recesses and a reduced slot connecting the recesses, the body being provided with lateral chambers communicating with the intermediate portion of the slot, the recesses and the slot extending from the base entirely through the body, the chambers extending from the base partway through the body, a switch lever disposed in the recesses and in the slot, a fulcrum for the lever, mounted on the base within one recess and accessible through said recess, a weight adjustable along the lever and located in the other recess, means accessible through said other recess for holding the weight in adjusted positions, terminals in the chambers and cooperating with the lever, securing devices connecting the body with the base and retaining the terminals, the securing devices embodying means external to the body for bringing the terminals into a circuit, and means for holding the lever releasably out of engagement with the terminals.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature.
JAMES E. GOODWIN.
