- My invention relates to fuse plugs, and more particularly to that style of fuse plugs which are called refillable, by which I mean fuse plugs of the character adapted to permitcof the ready insertion of a new fuse by a layman should theoriginal fuseloe operated or blown. lVhen fuse plugs of this character are refilled by laymen it is necessary that the fuse plug be of such character that it can accommodate only the particular size of fuse wire which will protect the particular circuit upon which the plug is used.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Fun 5. Bax'rnn',
a citizen of the United States, residing at hicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in B USGr-E lUQS, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact dr-z'seription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part or this specificatlon.
My invention relates to fuse plugs, and more particularly to that style of fuse plugs which are called refillable, by which I mean fuse plugs of the character adapted to permitcof the ready insertion of a new fuse by a layman should theoriginal fuseloe operated or blown. lVhen fuse plugs of this character are refilled by laymen it is necessary that the fuse plug be of such character that it can accommodate only the particular size of fuse wire which will protect the particular circuit upon which the plug is used.
In accordance with my invention I so arrange the fuse plug that a gage is provided which will permit of a fuse of a given ca pacity being inserted, or one of less capacity, but will prevent the insertion of one of a greater capacity. so that this gage must be used if the fuse is to be inserted at all.
I will explain my invention more in detail by referring to the accompanying draw ing, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my improved fuse structure with the cover plate removed Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the same;

Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 2, 3 and 4, I show a fuse plug-having the base or body portion 1 on which is secured the central contact 2 and the outer screw threaded contact 3, which as customary make contacts with the two contacts provided in the ordinary socket. The screw threaded contact 3 is connected to my improved gage structure 4, which consists of the downthereof on line Means are then provided war'dly extending arm 5, the horizontal portion 6 and the vertical portion 7 which forms the gage and guard. A screw 8 is adapted to hold'the structure in position as readily apparent. The plate '7' has a hole 9 which forms the gage proper. The screw 2 likewise holds a gage plate 10 in position having the hole 11. These holes 9 and ii are of such size as to accommodate a fuse wire 12 of the proper size to protect the particular circuit for which the plug is rated. Ofcourse, a fuse of smaller capacity could be inserted, but not a fuse of larger capacity. T. e fuse is then inserted by having one extremity fastened under the screw 2, the free end then inserted through the hole 11 so that the fuse stands upwardly, whereupon the free extremity is then inserted through the hole 9 and the extreme (3Xt1'6111- ity held under the screw 8. A cap plate 13 then incloses the fuse, this cap plate being provided with the customary transparent window 1-1. he gage plate 7, it will be unless this fuse passes through the hole 9. This gage plate 7 also extends upwardly as more apparent from Fig. 8 so that it is flush with the upper surface of the plug and thus extends directly into contact with the window 14:. The device as thus constructed permits the insertion or connection between the terminals 2 and 8 of a fuse only of the right capacity or of a less capacity.
heferring more particularly to Figs. 5 and 6, I show a modified form of my invention in which the base structure 1 has a bridge 15 which connects directly with the outer contact 3. The central contact f2 is split and has a nut 16 which when screwed down into the position shown in Fig. 6 brings the split ends of the outer contact 2" together, thus to hold the fuse 12 securely in position. The inner extremity of this outer contact 2 again has the gage hole 11.
he upper extremity of the bridge 15 likewise is split at its extreme extremity, these extremities being forced together by the wing nut 17 when the fuse is in place. The lower portion of this bridge again has the gage hole 9 to permit only of the insertion of the right size fuse as already explained.
It is of course apparent that instead of a round fuse a flat fuse can be or any other shape so long as the gage 18 made accordingly. It will be noted that the screw 2 is large enough to cover the gage hole 11 so that none of the melted fuse can escape into the socket to short circuit the terminals thereof.
Having thus described two forms which my invention may take, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A reiillable fuse plug of the character described having two connecting terminals each adapted to receive and secure the iiree end 01" a {use adapted to extend from one connecting means to the other, and a gage plate mounted within said fuse plug, said gage plate having a hole therethrough to accommodate a predetermined size of :tuse, said gage plate extending across the path of the fuse to prevent access to one of said connecting means except through said hole.
2. A refillable iuse plug of the character described having two connecting terminals each adapted to receive and secure the free end of a fuse adapted to extend from one connecting means to the other, and means mounted within said fuse plug, said means including a gage plate having a hole to accommodate a predetermined size of fuse, said means preventing the interposition of a used or fuse fuse between said connecting means except through said gage hole aforesaid.
8. A refillable :tuse plug of the character described having two connecting terminals each adapted to receive and secure the free end of a use adapted to extend from one connecting means to the other, and a gage plate mounted within said fuse plug, said gage plate having a hole therethrough to accommodate a predetermined size of fuse, said gage plate extending across the path oi the fuse to prevent access to one of said connecting means except through said hole, said gage plate carrying one of said con necting means.
4:. A refillable fuse plug oi? the character described having two connecting terminals each adapted to receive and secure a free end of a fuse adapted to extend from one connecting means to the other, and means having a gage hole entirely screening one connecting means to prevent the interposition of a fuse between said connecting means ex cept through said gage hole.
