L. H. SHOVER DI SPLAY JAR STAND Filed Dec. 22, 1924 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Jan. l2, 1926.
LAMAR H. SHOVER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
nrsrLAY JAR sraivn.
Application filed December To all whom t may concerne' iBe it known that I, LAMAR H. SI-iovnii, a citizen of the United States, and resident `of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Vilisconsin, have invented Certain new and useful lmprovements in Display Jar Stands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and yexact description thereo-f.
This invention relates to display jar stands.
Objects of this invention are to provide a display a-r `stand in which a plurality of ars are removably mounted and are adapted to Arevolve 'about a central aXis so as to display any desired jar in an attractive and :simple manner, to provide a display stand in which the jars are securely locker in position, and to provide means to permit the Aready tipping or rocking of the jars and to thereafter holdsuch jars in a slanting position to facilitate removing of the contents such 'as candy thereof during dispensing.
lt to be noted that patrons may rock the jars around in a free manner 'and it there-v fore is necessary to vprovide means for `preventing inadvertent tipping of the jars without the sanction of the dispenser `or disturbance due to Centrifugal force as a result 'of inadvertent rapid opening of the frame.
A further object is to provide means for permitting tipping of the jars at only one position with reference to the supporting stand. For example, the store keeper may so set the display stand that "the jars may lbe tipped only When they are .presented to- 'ivards `him Aand are remote from the customer.
A further'object is to provide ilatch meeh- :anism which is not opened by centrifugal force, lbut is held in a more tightly latched Acondition.
A further `object is to provide a ydisplay stand which cooperates with a :having a beaded bottom vand avoids any clamping bands or similar members.
A further object is to prov-ide a movable means whereby the number of ars displayed `may be varied.
Further objects are to provide a simple, attractive and strong vdisplay device which may be easily and cheaply manufactured by ordinary machine shop methods. I
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying` drawings, in Which :d
22, .1924. igeni'al No. 757,463.
lligure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of the display stand showing two of the jars in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a horizontal .sectional view :showing certain of the parts removed for the sake of clear-ness and showing one of the ars in section and one in full.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that an ornamental base l is provided With a centrally positioned tapped hole 2. wWithin this tapped hole a thread reduced extension 3 of a shortspindle or axle 4 iswscreWed. This :spindle or aXle is provided with a shoulder or flange 5, and such shoulder or flange clamps a circular disk 6 in position. Preferably the-disk and base 1 are Vlocked against relative rotary motion by any suitable means as lfor example a pin 7, although 'obviously other mea-ns could be employed. This disk is provided With a notch or slot 8 lat one portion thereof for a purpose hereinafter to appear.
rllhe rotary portions of thedevice comprise a plurality of channel shaped arms 9 which 4are securely riveted bet-Ween upper and ylower disks l() and A11. These disks are apertured .and slid-ably fit the :spindle vor stub shaft 4.
The outer ends of the arms 9 have riveted :thereto short trans-verse plates 12 which are `provided with down turned y=ears .or lugs 13. A Iplurality of sheet metal jar supports 14 :are provided with -.clownt=unned earsvk 15, which vare `positioned outside yof the ears 13 and are pivotally secured theretoby means of :pintle pins 16 `thereby permitting a free rocking motion-of the jar supports or plates 111-. These :jar'supports or pilates Mare yprovided With a pair of upturned inwardly curved -1'='etaining lugs or ears l17 at Ispaced pointsy on theirinner sides, asvinost clearly `shown in Figure 2. r:lvhe outer sides of the plates la Iare-each provided Witha depressed strap likeportion 19 which isseparatedfrom the 'main body of the plates by means of a slit. Thisistrap like portion retains a slide 2O Whose outer end .is providedivith an iup- Wardly extending inwardly curved retaining lear or vlug 21 arranged `symmetrically With respecttothe ears 1.7. Therslide 2() is further proivided with a downtunned lug 22 .and it is to be noted from reference to Figure 1 that each of the plates 14 is provided with a similar downturned lug 23. A11 adjusting or Clamping screw 24 passes loosely'through the lug 22 and is threaded into the lug 2S to provide adjustment for the movable clamping ear or lug 2l. It is to be noted that each of the plates lt is provided with downturned lugs 25 which receive between them the upper end of a latch lever 26, such latch lever being freely pivoted between the lugs. These levers pass through slots 27 formed in the channel arms 9 and are provided with notches 28 adapted to receive a portion of such arms as shown on the left hand side of Figure l to thereby locl the plates la in horizontal position. These arms are provided with cam-like portions, as shown in Figure l, to permit their free sliding into locking position when the plates lllare rocked towards horizontal position. The arms 2G or latch levers are provided with outwardly projecting stop pins 29 which limit the upward motion thereof and thus hold the plates lll in a predetermined position, as shown in dotted lines on the left hand side of Figure l.
lt will be noted that the latches 2G are prevented from inward swinging throughout the major portion of their path of travel by the plate 6, as such arms will contact with the peripheral portion of the dish: or plate 6 before unlatching occurs. However, the notch 8 in the plate provides one point where the latches may be freely rocked inwardly to unlock the plates l-l and permit their outward swinging.
It is to be noted particularly" that there is i no danger of dropping the jars for the reason that they are securely clamped between the ears or retaining lugs 17 and 21.
If desired an auxiliary standard 30 may be provided and is preferably equipped with a reduced portion 31 adapted to be removably seated in a socket formed in the upper portion of the spindle 4. The upper portion of the standard 30 may carry a sign receiving member or may carry a plurality of arms 32 provided with upturned lugs 33 at their ends adapted to retain any suitable article, such as an auxiliary jar or ornamental member.
It will be seen from the description that a very serviceable jar display stand has been provided which permits the free rotation of a plurality of jars about acentral point, and which permits the selective tipping of the jars at a predetermined point in their travel, and which will retain the jars in their tipped position and permit the ready removal of the contents as, for instance during dispensing.
It will further be seen that although these highly desirable features of construction and operation are attained that, nevertheless, the
device is extremely simple and rugged and may be lcheaply produced.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
I claim:
l. A jar display stand comprising a base, a spindle carried thereby, a revoluble member pivotally supported by said spindle and having outwardly projecting arms, a tilting pla-te pivoted to the outer ends of each of said arms, and having a plurality of jar retaining lugs formed thereon, a latch pivot- 'F means thereon, a latch for locking said plate temporarily in horizontal position, and means carried by said display stand for permitting unlatching of said latches at a predetermined point only.
3. A jar display stand comprising a base, a 9
spindle carried thereby, a revoluble member pivotally supported by said spindle and having outwardly projecting arms, a tilting plate pivoted to the outer end of each of said arms, lugs carried by each of said plates and adapted to engage the base of said jar, one of said lugs being adjustable to clamp said body in place, a latch lever pivoted to each of said plates and having a notch therein, said latch lever passing through a slot formed in the corresponding arm and adapted to receive a portion of such arm in such notch to temporarily lock the corresponding plate in horizontal position, and a disk carried by a stationary portion of said stand and having its periphery arranged in proximity to said latches, said disk having a notch adapted to receive a latch when the revoluble member occupies a predetermined position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of lvlilwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
